SummaryThe addition of small amounts of extrinsic thromboplastin or of thrombin to blood in vitro accelerated coagulation more frequently and to a greater extent when determined by the flowing time test than when measured by the silicone clotting time, or by the blood or plasma heparin tolerance tests. Similar results were obtained when intrinsic thromboplastin formation was stimulated by contact with glass. However there was little or no acceleration of the flowing clotting time of plasma obtained from aliquots of the thromboplastin-containing blood. These results indicate that the flowing clotting time (thrombus formation time) of whole blcod is a more reliable test of hypercoagulability than previously described blood or plasma clotting time tests.

To date, there has been no reliable test to identify unfavorable course of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP), especially in aspirin intolerant patients. The research aimed to analyze the expression of transcript variants of PTGS1 and PTGS2 genes in the pathobiology of the disease. The study was performed on 409 adult patients: 206 CRSwNP patients including 44 (21.36%) aspirin intolerant patients and 203 healthy volunteers in the control group. Transcript variants of the PTGS1 and PTGS2 genes named as follows: COX1.1 for NM_000962, COX1.2 for NM_080591, COX1.3 for NM_001271165.1, COX1.4 for NM_001271368.1, COX1.5 for NM_001271166.1, COX2.1 for NM_000963.3, COX2.2 for AY_151286 and COX2.3 for BQ_722004 were confirmed using direct sequencing and quantified using targeted qPCR. The coexistence of all examined transcript variants in the study and the control group and significant differences between both were found. In aspirin sensitive patients, the levels of COX1.2, COX1.3, COX1.4 and COX1.5 isoforms were higher compared to aspirin-tolerant patients. The severity of symptoms was bigger in patients with higher expressions of variants: COX1.1 (R with dCt = −0.134; p = 0.0490), COX1.3 (R = −0.1429; p = 0.0400) and COX1.5 (Rs = −0.1499; p = 0.032). The expression of COX1.1 (Rs = −0.098; p = 0.049) and COX1.5 (Rs = −0.141; p = 0.043) isoforms increased with polyposis advancement in endoscopy. With the CT extent of sinuses opacification, COX1.1 isoform also significantly increased (Rs = −0.163; p = 0.020). The isoforms COX1.3, COX1.4, COX1.5 and COX2.1 may promote milder CRSwNP course. On the contrary, the variants COX1.1, COX1.2 and COX2.2 may be involved in a more aggressive disease.

Purpose: To examine the reliability, validity, and performance characteristics of the 10 to 5 repeated jump test (10–5 RJT) in adolescent male athletes. The 10–5 RJT has been shown to be a valid and reliable test of reactive strength index (RSI) in older adolescents (age 17–19 y), but less is known in younger adolescent athletes at different stages of maturity. Methods: Athletes (age 11–17 y) completed the 10–5 RJT on 2 days, 1 week apart, to examine the reliability (n = 41), validity (n = 18) of the test. Athletes were classified as pre, circa, or post peak height velocity (PHV) height velocity using maturity offset to examine the effect of maturation status on RSI, flight time (FT), ground contact time (GCT), and jump height (JH) (n = 68) using a cross-sectional design. Results: Paired samples t tests showed no significant differences (P ≥ .05), and Bland–Altman analysis showed no bias and close limits of agreement for RSI, JH, FT, and GCT between the contact mat and force plate. Interday reliability was rated excellent for RSI (intraclass correlation coefficient = .91) and good for GCT, FT, and JH (intraclass correlation coefficient = .81–.85). All variables had a coefficient of variation ≤ 10%. RSI increased across maturation groups, with significant differences between pre-PHV and post-PHV groups (P = .014, d = 1.00). Conclusion: The 10–5 RJT is a valid and reliable test for adolescent male athletes. Greater RSI with advancing maturity was primarily due to increased FT and JH, with GCT remaining similar.

Abstract The results of this study are conclusive. The ASTM D-2229 Test Method is not a reliable test for measuring adhesion of wire cords to rubber compounds. However, by using the basic design and modifying it, an accurate measurement of bond strength on a macroscopic level can be obtained. This test is insensitive for all practical purposes to compound physical properties and changes in cord diameter and embedded length—for both stranded and rod-like cords. It is also possible with this test to calculate the amount of stress that is exerted on the surface of the wire cord to determine the relationship between failing stress and the material strength of the rubber compound. Properly used, this new test should give the compounder a better tool to study the adhesion of compounds to metal.
