This paper describes a naturalistic research study based on the following question, “what are the experiences in the lives of upper elementary school children that foster an intrinsic motivation to seek information?” Participants were ten-year-olds selected using a specially-created survey. Analysis, based on data collected through interviews and drawings, indicates that students came from various family and socioeconomic backgrounds, exhibited an affinity for play, and tended to be creative and non-competitive. A point-of-passion experience occurred in the lives of all of the informants, as well as the presence of “anchor” relationships. Students specified components of intrinsically motivating information seeking episodes.

The game of “Money Changer's Bingo” is an activity for upper elementary school children who like competition and need practice in making and counting change. Children simulate making purchases of grocery store items and record their representations of excessive payments on game boards. Money Changer's Bingo is an exciting and fun-filled game, but it also has the educational value of reinforcing arithmetic concepts while children practice determining equivalent representations for various denominations of money.

This article will describe a teaching technique for enriching the arithmetic experiences of upper-elementary- (seventh and eighth grades) school children. While the technique is designed for the more talented student at this grade level, it can be adapted for use with all students. It could also be modified for students at lower grade levels.
