Abstract: Medellin 1968 was a time of grace, an eruption of the Spirit for Latin America.  It was a creative reception of the Vatican II by the local Latin-American Church that perceived in the outcry of the poor a sign of the times. In Medellin, Pope John XXIII’s wish – that the face of the conciliar Church be that of the Church of the poor – was finally concretized. This was a wish that the naturally very Centro-European Vatican II was unable to fulfil. Keywords: Vatican II; Local church; Signs of the times; Poor; Justice.

Abstract: The Medellin Conference became one of the most significant and decisive ecclesial events for the Church, particularly in Latin America. For what happened was an opportune happening, a time of grace, an event of the Spirit. And it is significant that its “gold anniversary” happens in Pope Francisco’s days, someone who, like Medellin, reinterprets the signs of the times in the light of Jesus’ return and in the option for the poor. To re-contextualize today this double reference in the Latin American Continent is to listen to Medellin and to celebrate it at the moment of its fiftieth anniversary. Keywords: Conference of Medellín; Latin American Church; Back to Jesus; Option for the por; Pope Francisco.

The objective of this paper is to provide arguments to identify Latin American Theology with Liberation Theology, and vice versa. Among these arguments, one should consider the awareness of the Church in Latin America reaching its “age of maturity” in the post-conciliar period. Other arguments are the conviction of liberation theologians to be elaborating a “new way” of doing theology; a distance from the illustrated characteristic of theology; and, the possibility of recognizing in regional events, particularly in the poor, God’s original speech. This article aims to contribute to the status quaestionis of the theological method.

Abstract: Medellín is fruit of a Church that is at the right time and in the right place. It was a daring movement of the Latin American Church, a Church that still continues to follow this path fifty years later. Prophetic bishops, catalytic agents of a set of daring moves and assisted by theologians and pastoralists of first magnitude, launched an ecclesial process that would radically change the Latin American Church’s profile. For the Author, the factors that made possible the realization of the II Conference are basically four: the moment of deep transformations in the revolutionary decade of 1960; a Church in tune with its historical moment and alert to the new signs of the times; the Vatican II’s renovation, of which Medellín was a “creative reception” and the fact that Medellín made of the Council a “starting point” rather than “a point of arrival”. Abstract: The Aparecida Document represents a challenge for the Church. It asks for a change in mentality (a pastoral conversion) on everyone’s part. However, the required missionary ardour will only become true if it finds appropriate structures for its realization. The text starts off in the context of a historical ecclesial configuration that still remains in the imagination of many Catholics despite all the novelties of the Vatican II Council. Next, it distinguishes theological identity from the institutional configuration of the Church; it shows the significance of the local church for a truly experienced faith; and it confronts the challenge set by the Episcopal Conference in Aparecida. In a final section it presents three characteristics of a missionary Church: a Church of mystics, one of missionary Christians and one of the poor.

Abstract: The Author sketches the Medellin’s trajectory, be it as a historical event, be it as an opportune event. As a historical happening, Medellin relates with the previous history of the Episcopal Latin-American Council, and with that of the Vatican II; and the latter, in its turn, was its support and inspiration. This inspiration may be summed up by the fact that it lived the historicity of the Church’s mystery (LG 5). As a consequence, the perception of the signs of the times emphasizes the Spirit’s visit in the corporeity; it inspires the adoption of the methodology of the See-Judge-Act from the faith in Jesus Christ’s mystery; it opens the Church of America to a triple dimension: the centrality of the poor, the guidance towards Liberation and the structural dimension of the Church with the Ecclesial Grass-root Communities. And in the post-Medellin path, the Author points to signs of suffering and martyrdom, and to the motivating presence of the Spirit who, if heard, renews the Church so that it will remain faithful and renewed in its raison d’être: to evangelize. Keywords: Conference of Medellín; Vatican Council II; Historicity; Mystery of the Church; Evangelization in Latin America. Keywords: Conference of Medellín; Vatican Council II; Historicity; Mystery of the Church; Evangelization in Latin America.

Following the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), over a thousand priests and religious sisters and brothers were exiled, imprisoned, tortured, or murdered in Latin America by authoritarian governments. A much larger number of lay Church workers were also incarcerated, brutalized, or killed. Most suffered or died because, following the ideals of Vatican II and the Second Latin American Bishops Conference at Medellín, Colombia (1968), they committed themselves to the amelioration of the marginalized in their countries, even though they were fully aware that to do so placed their lives in great peril. This chapter treats a select number—mostly priests and nuns—who were killed because of their prophetic devotion to the poor. It is limited to the nations of Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Central America. It also touches on the bitter divisions that resulted in the Church as a consequence of this new religious activism. Finally, it demonstrates why the deaths of so many religious-based social justice activists forced the institutional Catholic Church to reexamine its outdated criteria for martyrdom.
