La Conferencia de Medellín se constituye uno de los eventos eclesiales más significativos y decisivos para la Iglesia, particularmente en América Latina. Pues, lo que sucedió fue un acontecimiento kairótico, un tiempo de gracia, un acontecimiento del Espíritu. Y es significativo que sus “bodas de oro” ocurran en tiempos del Papa Francisco, que, al igual que Medellín, reinterpreta los signos de los tiempos a la luz del retorno a Jesús y a la opción por los pobres. Recontextualizar hoy esa doble referencia en el continente latinoamericano es escuchar y celebrar Medellín, también con ocasión de sus 50 años.Abstract: The Medellin Conference became one of the most significant and decisive ecclesial events for the Church, particularly in Latin America. For what happened was an opportune happening, a time of grace, an event of the Spirit. And it is significant that its “gold anniversary” happens in Pope Francisco’s days, someone who, like Medellin, reinterprets the signs of the times in the light of Jesus’ return and in the option for the poor. To re-contextualize today this double reference in the Latin American Continent is to listen to Medellin and to celebrate it at the moment of its fiftieth anniversary.Keywords: Conference of Medellín; Latin American Church; Back to Jesus; Option for the por; Pope Francisco.

Medellín 1968 fue un tiempo de gracia, una irrupción del Espíritu para América Latina, fue una recepción creativa del Vaticano II por parte de la Iglesia local Latinoamericana que en el clamor de los pobres discernió un signo de los tiempos En Medellín se actualiza el deseo de Juan XXIII de que el rostro de la Iglesia conciliar fuera el dela Iglesia de los pobres, que el Vaticano II, seguramente muy centro-europeo, no logró plasmar.Abstract: Medellin 1968 was a time of grace, an eruption of the Spirit for Latin America.  It was a creative reception of the Vatican II by the local Latin-American Church that perceived in the outcry of the poor a sign of the times. In Medellin, Pope John XXIII’s wish – that the face of the conciliar Church be that of the Church of the poor – was finally concretized. RESUMEN: El objetivo de esta investigación es suministrar argumentos para identificar la Teología latinoamericana con la Teología de la liberación, y viceversa. Entre estos argumentos se debe considerar la conciencia de alcanzar la “mayoría de edad” de la Iglesia en América Latina en el postconcilio; la convicción de los teólogos de la liberación de estar elaborando una “nueva manera” de hacer teo­logía; una toma de distancia del carácter ilustrado de la teología; y la posibilidad de reconocer en los acontecimientos regionales, particularmente en los pobres, un habla original de Dios. Este artículo pretende hacer una contribución al status quaestionis del método teológico.ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to provide arguments to identify Latin American Theology with Liberation Theology, and vice versa. Among these arguments, one should consider the awareness of the Church in Latin America reaching its “age of maturity” in the post-conciliar period. Other arguments are the conviction of liberation theologians to be elaborating a “new way” of doing theology; a distance from the illustrated characteristic of theology; and, the possibility of recognizing in regional events, particularly in the poor, God’s original speech. This article aims to contribute to the status quaestionis of the theological method.

Medellín é fruto de uma Igreja no tempo e no lugar certo. Foi uma ousadia da Igreja na América Latina, que continua fazendo caminho, 50 anos depois. Bispos proféticos, catalisadores de um conjunto de iniciativas arrojadas e assessorados por teólogos e pastoralistas de primeira grandeza, desencadearam um processo eclesial que mudaria radicalmente o perfil da Igreja na América Latina. Para o Autor, os fatores que possibilitaram a realização da II Conferência são basicamente quatro: o momento de profundas transformações da década revolucionária de 1960; uma Igreja sintonizada com seu momento histórico e atenta aos novos sinais dos tempos; a renovação do Vaticano II, do qual Medellín foi uma “recepção criativa”; e o fato de Medellín ter feito do Concílio mais um “ponto de partida” do que um “ponto de chegada”. Abstract: Medellín is fruit of a Church that is at the right time and in the right place. It was a daring movement of the Latin American Church, a Church that still continues to follow this path fifty years later. Prophetic bishops, catalytic agents of a set of daring moves and assisted by theologians and pastoralists of first magnitude, launched an ecclesial process that would radically change the Latin American Church’s profile. For the Author, the factors that made possible the realization of the II Conference are basically four: the moment of deep transformations in the revolutionary decade of 1960; a Church in tune with its historical moment and alert to the new signs of the times; the Vatican II’s renovation, of which Medellín was a “creative reception” and the fact that Medellín made of the Council a “starting point” rather than “a point of arrival”. RESUMEN: El artículo presenta las Ponencias previas a Medellín que, junto con el discurso inaugural de Pablo VI, marcarán el rumbo de la Segunda Conferencia: partir de la realidad del pueblo pobre y creyente, escuchar su clamor, discernir los signos de los tiempos y asumir una serie de opciones pastorales, de modo que Medellín constituye una recepción creativa del Vaticano II para América Latina y el surgimiento de una Iglesia pobre, misionera y pascual.ABSTRACT: This article presents the papers which, before Medellin, and together with the opening discourse of Paul VI, marked the course of the Second Conference and exposed: the reality of the poor and believing people, the listening to their cry, the discernment of the signs of the times, and pastoral options. Medellin was a creative reception of Vatican II for Latin America and signaled the emergence of a poor, missionary and paschal Church.

Este artículo quiere ser una mirada retrospectiva a uno de los acontecimientos claves de la historia de la iglesia católica del Continente tanto porque adquirió su madurez como iglesia latinoamericana, como porque comenzó a tener una nueva comprensión postcolonial de la realidad del Continente. A los cincuenta años de este magno acontecimiento realizamos un recorrido literario al diagnóstico que hicieron los obispos católicos reunidos en Medellín. Revisitamos la imagen de nueva sociedad que proyectan y nos gozamos de la profunda cercanía que presentan respecto a las grandes transformaciones que se viven en América Latina y el Caribe hacia fines de la décadas de los 60. Podemos palpar así la cuna que da origen a una iglesia profética que más allá de toda cristiandad retoma centralmente su seguimiento de Jesús de Nazaret, tal como lo pide el papa Francisco actualmente. Como dice Medellín: “es el momento de inventar con imaginación creadora la acción que corresponde realizar, que habrá de ser llevada a término con la audacia del Espíritu y el equilibrio de Dios” (Introducción, 3).Abstract: This article hopes to have a retrospective look at one of the key events of the Catholic Church’s history in the Latin-American Continent both because it has reached its maturity as Latin-American Church and because it started to have a new postcolonial understanding of the Continent’s reality. On the fiftieth anniversary of this great event we carry out a literary exam of the diagnosis made by the Catholic bishops gathered in Medellin. We revisit the image of the new society that they project and enjoy the deep understanding they present with regard to the great transformations that people were going through in Latin America and in the Caribbean towards the end of the 1960s. We can thus get to know clearly the cradle that gave origin to a prophetic church, a Church that far more than all Christianity has retaken its following of Jesus of Nazareth, just as Pope Francisco requests at present. This article argues that in order to think about a Latin American Protestant social ethic one needs to understand the ethos in which it emerges. Such an ethos forms in the context of the development of Protestant social thought in Latin America. This article revisits some important moments and movements for the formation of this Protestant social thinking in the region in the course of the 20th century. Five moments are highlighted. Firstly, the awareness of Latin American Protestantism is identified as the starting point for the formation of a Protestant ethos in the continent. In a second moment, the search for autonomy of Latin American Protestantism stands out. Next, the moment is discussed when, in rupture with a reformist and socialist social vision, Protestant sectors for the first time embraced a more radical project. The fourth moment presents a brief evangelical response in the context of integral mission. Finally, the current challenges in a context marked by indigeneity and pentecostality are briefly addressed.Propõe-se que para pensar uma ética social protestante latino-americana precisa-se entender o ethos no qual ela emerge. Tal ethos se forma no contexto do desenvolvimento do pensamento social protestante na América Latina. Esse artigo revisita alguns momentos e movimentos importantes para a formação desse pensar social protestante na região no decorrer do seculo XX. Cinco momentos são destacados.  Primeiramente, identifica-se a tomada de consciência do protestantismo latino-americano como ponto de partida para a formação de um ethos protestante no continente. Num segundo momento, destaca-se a busca por autonomia do protestantismo latino-americano. Em seguida, discute-se o momento quando, em ruptura com uma visão social reformista e desenvolvimentista, setores protestantes abraçaram pela primeira vez um projeto mais radical. O quarto momento apresenta uma breve resposta evangélica no contexto da missão integral. Por fim, aborda-se brevemente os desafios atuais num contexto marcado pela  indigeneidade e pentecostalidade.

The Puebla meeting of the Latin American bishops in early 1979 capped a decade of far-reaching and surprising change in the Catholic Church. A new, local-level unit—the “ecclesial base community” or CEB—has given Catholicism a vitality in society it has not known for centuries. At the same time, the Church has achieved an unprecedented integration as an institution nationally and regionally, in Latin America as a whole. It has found itself, through an unexpected historical dynamic, increasingly committed to the cause of the poor in deed as well as word, And it has been thrust into political confrontations with state authority throughout the region with an intensity and scope unmatched since the nineteenth century.

Da mesma forma que Cristo dividiu sua missão com os apóstolos, o Papa divide seu pontificado com colaboradores, sendo estes determinantes para a condução da Política da Igreja. Este artigo aborda as alterações que o Papa Francisco realizou durante o primeiro ano de seu pontificado, com o objetivo de analisar as tendências organizacionais deste novo pontificado e sua relação com a “hemorragia de fiéis” na América Latina. Esta reflexão é realizada abordando inicialmente os aspectos metodológicos sobre a Política Vaticana. Posteriormente, o artigo realiza um debate sobre novos órgãos no processo decisório vaticanista e a reconfiguração de órgãos antigos. Além de falar das mudanças, o artigo também fala das manutenções no processo decisório da Igreja, pois elas também trazem muito significado sobre as intenções do papa Argentino. Para tanto, o método de pesquisa utilizado é a documentação direta, tendo com instrumentos a pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Ao final do artigo, foi concluída uma tendência ao perfil moderado no governo do Papa Francisco, além de uma predisposição por nomes latino-americanos ou que tiveram experiências e residências no continente latino-americano. Os resultados deste estudo contribuem para futuras pesquisas sobre o governo da Santa Sé em resposta a “hemorragia de fiéis” na América Latina. Palavras-chave: Igreja Católica. Cardeais. Organização Política.AbstractAs the same way Christ shared his mission with the apostles, the Pope shares his administration with his collaborators and the choice of these men is crucial for the conduct of Church.This article discusses the changes that the Pope Francis held during the first year of his pontificate to analyze the organizational trends of this new pontificate and its relationship with the bleeding of the faithful in Latin America. The discussion covers methodological issues about Vatican policy; a debate on new organs of the Vatican in political decisions; reconfiguration of existing agencies; and maintenance in the decision making process of the church. Thus, the research method used was direct documentation, and used the bibliographic and documentary research. Finally, the article noted a tendency to moderate profile in the government of the Pope Francisco, and it also noted a predisposition for Latin-American names or who have had experiences and residences in the Latin American continent. Result of this priority to stop the bleeding of the faithful in Latin America and manage crises in the Church as a whole.Keywords: Catholic Church. Cardinals. Policy Organization.
