The Bedriaga Plate-tailed Gecko,Teratoscincus bedriagaiNikolsky, 1900, is distributed in the northern and eastern desert basins of the Central Plateau of Iran, Sistan, and the desert regions of southern Afghanistan. Iranian specimens are believed to be rare in collections. In this study, the reproductive cycle of this species has been investigated through focusing on oogenesis from 5 April to 5 August, 2013. Generally, 15 adult females were collected by hand at midnight from southern parts of Damghan County, situated in Semnan Province of Iran. Ovaries were removed and processed for the purpose of histological and morphometric studies. The results revealed that oocyte growth starts in early April and terminates in late July. Moreover, mating commences in spring, especially at the beginning of May, with oviposition occurring from late May to late July. Approximately, 1 to 2 eggs are laid by females per clutch with the possibility of producing a secondary clutch later in the season. The maximum reproductive activity takes place in May and continues with a decreasing trend in June and more reduction in July and finally ends in August. No significant difference was observed between right and left side of reproductive system. Therefore, oogenesis occurs from April to July, whileT. bedriagaifollows an oogenic cycle typical for temperate species.

Abstract The aim of the study was to indicate the abiotic parameters of water and bottom sediments, which significantly affect the reproduction of Potamothrix hammoniensis in 9 shallow eutrophic lakes, of which 5 were dominated by macrophytes and 4 – by phytoplankton. Samples were collected once a month from January to December 2012. The percentage of Potamothrix hammoniensis individuals with a developed reproductive system varied in individual lakes and ranged from 14 to 72%. There was no correlation between the distinguished lake types and the proportion of sexually mature individuals. The reproductive activity was not observed in summer and early autumn. Among the measured parameters, the highest values of the Pearson correlation coefficient were found between the percentage of individuals with a developed reproductive system and the conductivity (r = 0.69; p < 0.001), pH (r = 0.51; p = 0.002) and the organic matter content in the sediments (r = −0.42; p = 0.012). It is worth noting that there was no correlation between the percentage of sexually mature specimens and the water temperature (r = −0.22, p = 0.204) and the oxygen concentration (r = −0.08; p = 0.648).

1. The reproductive activity in both sexes is completely inhibited during the exposure of adults to 34 °C immediately after feeding. The changes that take place in the reproductive system in males and females during exposure parallel those brought about by starvation or allatectomy. 2. Females exposed for 6 days to 34 °C immediately after feeding, then decapitated and placed at 28 °C, fail to form eggs, while those left with the head intact form mature eggs. 3. The course of oxygen consumption of normal males and females is compared with that of insects placed immediately after feeding at 34 °C and their respiration measured at the same temperature. 4. It seems that the corpus allatum is not active at high temperature, or if active its hormone is ineffective. It is suggested that it is the synthesis of specific adult proteins which is interfered with by high temperature, hence the inhibition of the reproductive activity.

In the histologic and electron microscopic study of the male reproductive system of bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, a vesicular system associated with spermiogenesis was observed. It appeared in the lumenal space of the seminiferous tubule (Fig. 1), in the heads of spermatids (Fig. 2), associated with the chromatins of the spermatid (Fig. 4). As deduced from sections, this vesicular system consisted of vesicles of various size or a large group of waving and twisted tubules (Fig. 3), After routine procedure of treatment for electron microscopy, the lumens of both of the vesicles and tubules were electron lucent. In human, vesicles and vesicular system associated with reproductive cell and tissue were reported. In abnormal spermiogenesis, flower-like body, actually vesicles, and giant vesicle associated with the head of spermatid were observed. In both cases the number of vesicle was limited from a single one to a few.

ABSTRACT The present investigation deals with the oestrogen-sensitivity of the female reproductive system during the neonatal period. Newborn female guinea pigs were used as test animals. At different times after a single subcutaneous injection of a physiological dose of 0.1 μg or an unphysiologically high dose of 10 μg 17β-oestradiol/100 g body weight, the RNA- and protein-synthesis was examined in the hypothalamic region, pituitary, cerebral cortex, liver, adrenal gland, ovary and uterus. With a physiological dose an increase in organ weight, protein content, RNA-and protein-synthesis was found only in the uterus. These alterations turned out to be dose-dependent. In addition to the findings in the uterus an inhibition of the aminoacid incorporation rate occurred in the liver following the injection of the high oestradiol dose. As early as 1 hour after the administration of 0.1 μg 17β-oestradiol an almost 100% increase in uterine protein synthesis was detectable. This result demonstrates a high oestrogen-sensitivity of this organ during the neonatal period. All the other organs of the female reproductive system such as the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary did not show any oestrogen response. Therefore the functional immaturity of the uterus during post partem life is not the result of a deficient hormone sensitivity but is correlated with the absence of a sufficient hormonal stimulus at this time. The investigation on the effects of actinomycin resulted in different reactions in the uterus and liver. In contrast to the liver a paradoxical actinomycin effect was found in the uterus after treatment with actinomycin alone. This effect is characterized by a small inhibition of RNA-synthesis and a 50% increase in protein synthesis. The treatment of the newborn test animals with actinomycin and 17β-oestradiol together abolished the oestrogen-induced stimulation of the uterine RNA-and protein-synthesis. Consequently, the effect of oestrogens during the neonatal period is also connected with the formation of new proteins via an increased DNA-directed RNA-synthesis.
