A new species of Atrocalyx (Lophiotremataceae) was collected from dead branches of Acer species in Yunnan Province, China. This is the first record of Atrocalyx on Acer. Lophiotrema bambusae and Lophiotrema guttulata is transferred to Atrocalyx based on combined SSU, ITS, LSU and tef1 sequences analyses. A detailed description and illustration of the new species is provided, and two new combinations are proposed.

Zhu et al. (1997) erected the tetragnathid genus Wolongia to accommodate Wolongia guoi Zhu, Kim & Song, 1997 and Wolongia wangi Zhu, Kim & Song, 1997 collected from the Sichuan and Shaanxi Provinces in China. In 2009, Ping et al. described Wolongia odontodes from the Gaoligong Mountains and remained with a nominal representation after the erection of the genus. This situation was somewhat rectified by Jin-long Wan & Xian-jin Peng (2013) reporting seven new species from the Gaoligong Mountains (Yunnan Province, southwest China). The genus currently with ten nominal species; three are known only from females, while seven are from both sexes (World Spider Catalog 2017). During our survey in Pathiramanal Island we found an undescribed Wolongia species. This is one of the most diverse areas of the Kerala state of Southern India, situated in the Vembanad Lake, a Ramsar Convention (2013) site (wetland of international importance). In this paper, we describe this new species and provide the first report of Wolongia from India.

Mount Fansipan, situated in the Hoang Lien Son Range, supports a rich subtropical and temperate flora of over 1700 species, including 25% of Vietnam’s endemic plant taxa (Nguyen & Harder 1996, Sterling et al. 2006). At elevations above 2000 m, Mount Fansipan contains numerous temperate genera including Acer Linnaeus (19 spp., Sapindaceae Jussieu), Alnus Miller (A. nepalensis, Betulaceae Gray), Betula Linnaeus (B. alnoides Buchanan-Hamilton, Betulaceae), Carex Linnaeus (36 spp., Cyperaceae Jussieu), Clematis Linnaeus (9 spp., Ranunculaceae Jussieu), Lithocarpus Blume (13 spp., Fagaceae Dumortier), Quercus Linnaeus (9 spp., Fagaceae), Rhododendron Linnaeus (40 spp., Ericaceae Jussieu), Rubus Linnaeus (36 spp., Rosaceae Jussieu), Tsuga Carrière (T. dumosa Eichler, Pinaceae Sprengel ex F. Rudolphi), Ulmus Linnaeus (U. lancifolia Roxburgh, Ulmaceae Mirbel), Vaccinium Linnaeus (12 spp., Ericaceae), and Viola Linnaeus (12 spp., Violaceae Batsch) (Vietnam Plant Data Center 2015, Nguyen & Harder 1996) with many of these genera being both species-rich and locally common (Nguyen & Harder 1996, pers. obs.). In April 2012, a collection of a specimen, representing the temperate genus Luzula de Candolle (1805: 158), was made while conducting botanical studies on the Carex flora of Mount Fansipan, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, which is about 30 km south of the border with Yunnan Province, China. While the specimen was immediately recognized as a Luzula, a new genus to the flora of Vietnam (Vietnam Plant Data Center 2015), it was not until our collection was identified using the keys in Wu & Clements (2000) and Kirschner (2002) that it was determined to be Luzula effusa Buchenau (1879: 88) (Figs. 1, 2). A Basic Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) search of an internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1+5.8S+ITS2) sequence obtained from our specimen (KM612280) showed a 100% match with an existing sequence for L. effusa var. chinensis (Brown 1903: 161) Wu (1992: 92) (AY727778.1, see Drábková & Vlcek 2010) in GenBank (National Center for Biotechnology Information 2014), supporting our identification based on morphology (Table 1). Eighteen other Luzula accessions, representing species placed in two different subgenera and four different sections, were found to have 100% coverage and 99% identity with the sequence from our specimen (National Center for Biotechnology Information 2014) (Table 1). In all cases, these sequences came from taxa that occur in regions that are more geographically disparate from Vietnam than the previously known closest location for L. effusa (see below). These taxa are also morphologically dissimilar to our specimen (see text below and Table 1).

Karstodiaptomus sheni n. gen., n. sp. is a new stygobiotic species of Calanoida (Crustacea: Copepoda), described from a cave in Yunnan Province, China. It is the first record of stygobiotic calanoids from China and the fourth species from Asia. To accommodate the new species, a new genus, Karstodiaptomus n. gen., was erected. The new species is distinguished from other representatives in the subfamily Speodiaptominae Borutzky, 1962 by the number of segments in the swimming legs P1–P4 (Exp + Enp) as: 2+2, 2+2, 2+2, 3+2, the armature of the antennule, maxilla, maxilliped, and the structure of the fifth leg. The position of the new species in the subfamily Speodiaptominae is discussed, and a brief note on its ecology is added.

The male of Barylestissaaristoi Jäger, 2008 is described for the first time from Menglun Town, Yunnan Province, China. This is the first record of this genus from China. An illustrated morphological description of this species is given.

This paper describes a new species of fossil wood, Wataria yunnanica Li et Oskolski, from the Dajie Formation of the middle Miocene in southern Yunnan province, China. This species shows the greatest similarity to the modern genus Reevesia Lindl. from the subfamily Helicteroideae of Malvaceae. The fossil specimen is ascribed to the genus Wataria Terada & Suzuki based on its combination of ring-porous wood and the presence of tile cells. It differs from other Wataria species because vessel groups are common in its latewood. This is the first record of Wataria in China. Other species of this genus have been reported from Oligocene and Miocene deposits in Japan, and from Miocene deposits in Korea. The occurrence of ring-porous wood in the Dajie Formation suggests that there may have been a seasonal (probably monsoonal) climate in southern Yunnan during the middle Miocene.

We reported the first record of a colubrid snake, Boiga siamensis, from China based on a female specimen collected in the tropical forest at Yingjiang county, near the China-Myanmar border. Boiga siamensis represents the fifth species of the genus in China. This species can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of morphological characters as stated in the original description. We further described morphological characters of the Chinese specimen in details and provided additional natural history data based on our observation. Lastly, we reconstructed the mitochondrial gene tree of all the species of Boiga from China using the cytochrome b gene fragment and suggested that B. siamensis is the sister taxon of B. guangxiensis with an uncorrected pairwise distance of 14.6%.

AbstractThe robust spines and sclerites of the early to middle Cambrian ‘mollusc’ Wiwaxia are ubiquitous in suitably preserved deposits, but are strikingly absent from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Cambrian Stage 3, Yunnan Province, SW China). Here we provide the first record of Wiwaxia sclerites from this rich deposit, extending the record of the genus to the earliest Cambrian Series 2. This reinforces the cosmopolitan distribution of this iconic Cambrian lophotrochozoan and demonstrates the strong faunal continuity that unites distant Cambrian Lagerstätten.

Eustra petrovi sp. nov. from China, Yunnan Province (type locality: cave Xianren Dong near to village Datianba, Longling County, Baoshan City) is described and illustrated. The new species exhibits troglomorphic features (depigmentation of tegument, brachyptery, microphthalmy) and can be separated from other species of Eustra by presenting a particular combination of character states.

Oliparisca menglaensis sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Cixiidae: Pentastirini) is described and illustrated from Yunnan Province of China. This represents the first record of the genus Oliparisca from China. The new taxon extends the distribution range of the genus Oliparisca, previously known only from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka. A key of identification to all known species of this genus and a map of their geographic distributions are provided.
