The present study examined the role of calling in a social cognitive model of well-being using a sample of 328 South Korean teachers. The model incorporating calling into the social cognitive model of well-being demonstrated an excellent fit, and our variables accounted for significant variance in job satisfaction (47%) and life satisfaction (38%). Among the 12 direct paths of the proposed model, 10 hypothesized paths were significant. The direct paths from positive affect to calling, self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction; from calling to self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and life satisfaction; from self-efficacy to outcome expectations; from outcome expectations to job satisfaction; and from job satisfaction to life satisfaction were significant. Additionally, the mediating paths between positive affect and life satisfaction via calling, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and job satisfaction were significant. The practical implications for enhancing teachers’ job and life satisfaction and future directions of research were discussed.

Objective Most chronic disease self-management interventions emphasise the integral role of self-efficacy in achieving behaviour change. We explored the applicability of this model in a low-income setting, from the perspective of both patients and clinicians. Methods Interviews with multimorbid patients and their health providers at two rural community health centres in Victoria, Australia. We used a phenomenological methodology, exploring themes of confidence to manage health, outcome expectations and goals. Results Many assumptions in which the self-efficacy model is grounded did not apply to this population. Past experiences and resource constraints, especially poverty and healthcare access, influenced confidence, expectations and the ability to achieve desired outcomes. Discussion The focus of traditional self-management support on individual behaviour change disadvantages rural low-income patients, who face barriers related to life experience and resource constraints. For this group, self-management support needs to return to its roots, moving away from a narrow conception of behaviour change and reinstating the role of ‘support’ into ‘self-management support’ interventions. Health providers working in rural low-income settings should recognise the limits inherent in self-efficacy focussed interventions and think broadly about engaging with their clients in whatever way supports them to find a life with meaning and purpose.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the elements and relationships that explain the entrepreneurial intent in university students, evaluating possible gender and degree differences. Design/methodology/approach The study is of quantitative approach, survey research design and cross-sectional method. The instrument used was a self-administered questionnaire answered by undergraduate university students enrolled in a public university. The sampling was stratified random, with a representative sample size of 734 cases. For data analysis and hypothesis testing, a confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model were made. Findings The results show that the entrepreneurial self-efficacy attribute largely explains the entrepreneurial intent, while all other variables, such as entrepreneurial identity aspirations and outcome expectations, play a less important role but maintain some influence. Research limitations/implications According to the findings of this research, institutions of higher education should direct efforts to improve the entrepreneurial skills of students, especially for women. And the creation of an institutional entrepreneurial culture should also be emphasized so that the university students are able to build an entrepreneurial identity. Originality/value The value of the research is the proposed integrative model that explains how to trigger entrepreneurial intent, shows the prominent role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy as a predictor variable of entrepreneurial intent and the role of entrepreneur identity aspirations and entrepreneurial self-efficacy as mediating variables. Additionally, this research identifies differences in the model of entrepreneurial intent derived from the variables of gender and degrees.

Although numerous studies have examined the role of helicopter parenting in child outcomes, there is little empirical cross-cultural research on the academic outcomes of helicopter parenting for late adolescents. This study investigated the differences in the association between mothers’ and fathers’ helicopter parenting and college students’ ( N = 343) academic outcomes across American and South Korean contexts, examining the role of self-efficacy as a mediator. Multigroup structural equation modeling analyses showed that South Korean fathers’ helicoptering has a negative relation with students’ academic outcomes. Higher levels of fathers’ parenting were directly related to students’ lower academic outcomes in the Korean context. However, comparable results were not observed with South Korean mothers or American parents. In addition, mothers’ helicopter parenting was not related to either self-efficacy or academic outcomes across the two countries. Although there are cultural differences in helicopter parenting practices, there appear to be potentially more cultural similarities across the two cultures than was conjectured.
