The heat sink with vertically rectangular interrupted fins was investigated numerically in a natural convection field, with steady-state heat transfer. A numerical study has been conducted using ANSYS Fluent software (R16.1) in order to develop a 3-D numerical model.  The dimensions of the fins are (305 mm length, 100 mm width, 17 mm height, and 9.5 mm space between fins. The number of fins used on the surface is eight. In this study, the heat input was used as follows: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 watts. This study focused on interrupted rectangular fins with a different arrangement and angle of the fins. Results show that the addition of interruption in fins in various arrangements will improve the thermal performance of the heat sink, and through the results, a better interruption rate as an equation can be obtained.

Abstract The heat transfer and pressure drop in a microchannel heat sink with 02 mixing chambers with inclined walls were numerically studied. The transport equations have been resolved by the finite volume method using ANSYS Fluent software. The operating fluids are water and Al2O3-water. The results obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from 187 and 705 show that adding a micro-mixing chamber with a rectangular rib in the microchannel improves the heat transfer and increases the pressure drop compared to conventional microchannels. The new shape of the mixing chamber studied shows a net decrease in pressure drop, which improves the performance of the micro heat sink by 5.6%.

The steady-state heat transfer in a calorimeter measurement chamber is modeled assuming that the sample is a generic nuclear material container filled with plutonium oxide powder. The measurement chamber is composed of nine solid materials and air. The heat transfer model includes natural convection in the plutonium oxide porous matrix, natural convection in the air space on top of the plutonium oxide powder, and heat conduction in the different solid parts of the measurement chamber and the heat flux sensor. The problem is treated as a conjugate heat transfer problem defined by a system of 24 partial differential equations coupled at the interfaces of the materials that form the measurement chamber. A computational fluid dynamics software is used to generate the grid and obtain the solution. The simulation results provide estimates of operational temperatures and heat losses that are of interest in the design of calorimeters.

In this work, the steady state heat transfer by natural convection in heat sinks with rectangular fins positioned vertically and horizontally was studied. The heat transfer by radiation was also considered. Several analyses were performed to determine the optimal number and position of the sensors used to measure the temperature on the heat sinks horizontally and vertically positioned. These analyses confirmed an almost uniform temperature distribution in the heat sink. This uniformity allowed the use of thermocouples only in the center of the heat sink. Twelve heat sinks were designed to study how their geometric parameters such as height, spacing and thickness of the fins, influence the heat transfer by free convection. In addition, in this work, two correlations using the dimensionless parameters Nusselt and Rayleigh are proposed. These correlations were obtained by using the results from the 12 heat sinks vertically and horizontally positioned considering a temperature range between 20 °C and 100 °C. Furthermore, studies were done to identify which of the 12 analyzed heat sinks managed to remove the greatest amount of heat in a given temperature range. The results were compared with those obtained from empirical correlations found in literature.
