Objective: To investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), metabolic syndrome and its components and degree of differentiation of prostate cancer.  Methods: The clinical data of 49 PCa cases treated during October, 2018 to February, 2021 were retrospectively analyzed, including patients’ height, weight, body mass index (BMI), age, blood pressure (BP), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Gleason score.  Results: Compared with simple PCa group, BMI, the MS group had higher BMI, diastolic blood pressure (DBP, FGB, TG) and VEGF (P<0.05), and higher Gleason score (P<0.05). MS group had a higher degree of malignancy (Gleason≥8).  Conclusion: This suggests that MS may promote the progression of PCa, and the increase of VEGF level can indicate the presence of MS in PCa patients, reflecting the progression of PCa to a certain extent.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common male malignant tumors in Western countries. In the United States, there are about 170,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2019, ranking second only to lung cancer.1, 2 In recent years, the incidence of prostate cancer in China is gradually increasing occupying the third place among male urogenital malignancies. The metastasis of prostate cancer mainly depends on blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, and the late discovery and poor prognosis of patients are the main reasons for the high fatality rate.2 Relevant epidemiological studies on immigration have found that the incidence of PCa in The Asian population in the United States is as high as 77.8 / l0000, which is similar to local residents and significantly higher than that in the native population in Asia. This suggests that, in addition to race and family history, different diet and lifestyle in China and the West may play an important role in the development and progression of PCa.3 Epidemiological studies have shown an association between geographic location and prostate cancer risk. In fact, the incidence of prostate cancer in Western men is 15 times higher than in Asian men. This suggests that environmental factors or lifestyle, especially diet and nutrition, may play a key role in the occurrence and development of prostate cancer.4 To some extent, metabolic syndrome reflects the diet and lifestyle of patients and is closely related to the occurrence and development of prostate cancer. In addition, Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as a kind of multi functional cytokine works through specific role in endothelial cells.It can promote endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and increase Vascular permeability. And VEGF can be induced in the body for blood vessel growth, angiogenesis, is closely related to tumorigenesis and metastasis. Numerous recent studies have shown that VEGF is closely related to the occurrence and development of prostate cancer and metabolic syndrome.5 In this paper, multiple physiological and pathological mechanisms of VEGF and metabolic syndrome associated with prostate cancer are reviewed.

Abstract Background and Aims Intravenous (IV) anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) is a potent anti-angiogenic factor for the treatment of solid tumours. While, intravitreal anti-VEGF injection is used in the treatment for macular and retinal diseases. The effects of IV anti-VEGF agents are well documented to cause hypertension, renal impairment and proteinuria. However only few reports showed the significance of intravitreal anti-VEGF injection causing minimal change disease (MCD) and acute kidney injury (AKI). Hence, this study is to determine the outcome of renal function following intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. Method This is a prospective, cross sectional study recruiting patients from ophthalmology day-care operation theatre that were scheduled for intravitreal anti-VEGF injection in University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). On the day of the injection of anti-VEGF, patients’ demographic data (age, gender, medical background, medications), blood pressure, height, weight and investigations for serum creatinine and urine protein creatinine ratio (PCR) were collected. Following these, they will receive the intravitreal anti-VEGF as per schedule. All these patients were given a follow-up within 72hours to reassess blood pressure, serum creatinine and urine PCR. Results A total of 90 patients were recruited. However, 15 patients were subsequently excluded as there was no repeated serum creatinine at 72-hours post treatment. Their mean age was 67.25 ± 10.41. Among all, 3 patients had significance increased in serum creatinine (4%) with significance changed of urine PCR post treatment. Table 1 showed baseline parameters prior to treatment and table 2 was post treatment parameters. Higher serum creatinine and proteinuria pre intravitreal anti-VEGF were identified to have higher OR of 1.018 (95% CI 1.001-1.035) (p=0.043) and OR 1.004 (1.000-1.007) (p=0.025) respectively among those who developed AKI. In assessing the association between higher pre-treatment creatinine and proteinuria (independent variable) and development of AKI (dependent variable) estimated by logistic regression with no AKI as a reference group we found that there were no significance. Conclusion Following intravitreal anti-VEGF administration, there were no significant changes in blood pressure. However, 4% from our cohort had AKI and worsening proteinuria at 72 hours post treatment. These patients had higher serum creatinine and proteinuria prior to treatment. However, our study is underpowered to establish the relationship between intravitreal anti-VEGF and development of AKI. Further study with larger sample size and longer-term outcome is needed.

Aim. This study aims to measure serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in a sample of Jordanian patients and to determine their relationship with the different stages of diabetic retinopathy. It also explores the correlation between VEGF concentrations and different biochemical and demographic findings. Materials and Methods. A total of 167 adults participated in the study. Participants were divided into two main categories: patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 without diabetic retinopathy (DR) (N = 62) and patients with DM type 2 affected by DR (N = 105). DR patients were further subclassified into nonproliferative (N = 41) and proliferative (N = 64). Basic laboratory tests were measured to correlate with VEGF levels. Irisin, a hormone linked to diabetic retinopathy was also measured and correlated with VEGF. Results. Serum VEGF was found to positively correlate with the severity of diabetic retinopathy. The means of VEGF serum concentrations were 60 pg/mL for controls, 133 pg/mL for nonproliferative DR patients, and 229 pg/mL for proliferative DR patients. We found a significant positive correlation with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and a significant negative correlation with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, age, and irisin. Conclusion. In this cohort of Jordanian diabetics, serum VEGF concentrations strongly correlated with the presence and stages of diabetic retinopathy, suggesting it as an appropriate indicator for diabetic retinopathy early detection and management in this society. VEGF levels also significantly correlated with HbA1c, HDL, and irisin levels. Further studies are encouraged to explore these relationships in other ethnic groups and with different diabetic complications.
