This paper deals with new types of steel seismic ties, which are energy absorbing devices installed between boiler and its support structure. To enhance the aseismic reliability of the boiler and its support structure, energy absorbing capacities of the seismic ties must be increased. To increase the capacities, sectional shapes of the seismic ties have been optimally designed. Concretely, I-section seismic ties as new types have been gained by optimizing the design parameters, material (conventional carbon steel and low yield strength steel), sectional height, web thickness, flange thickness under conditions to maximize absorbing energy and to restrict the reaction force equal to or smaller than that of round-section current seismic tie. As a result of cyclic load testing using 1/3 scale model, it was verified that energy absorption of the new types of seismic ties were 16–23 % larger than that of the current seismic tie.

In accordance with equilibrium differential equations and compatibility conditions of deformation, the partial differential equation of induced stress is achieved for elastic surrounding rocks of tunnels and chambers of round section. By method of the superposition principle, elastic analytical solutions of induced stress of surrounding rocks is derived from the partial differential equation, which is based on stress functions and boundary conditions.

The equation to determine the neutral axis of concrete filled steel tube(CFST) component with round section is presented in this paper. The geometric equation, physical equation and static equilibrium equation of CFST are analyzed to determine its section neutral axis. The compressed mechanical properties of CFST component are analyzed with the concrete material properties divided into tension and compression parts.Comparing the numerical results with the experimental results it can be verified that the equation to determine the neutral axis of CFST component with round section is useful to solve the problems that the tension and compression material properties of concrete are different.

Deformation of round castings due to thermal and/or mechanical strain may lead to the occurrence of their ovality defects during continuous casting. Presently, ovality defect from thermal deformation have been effectively controlled in actual casting process with the application of more advanced equipments and more sophisticated control strategies. But the control of ovality defect from larger mechanical deformation still cannot satisfy the need of caster design or higher qualified rate of castings. It is shown that excessive hot pressure while strand passes through tension leveler, is the main reason to generate larger mechanical deformation. With consideration of the characteristics of round caster and the requirement of safety production, a theoretical calculated model based on mechanical deformation analysis has been developed in the paper to eliminate ovality defect specially from the over large hot pressure. Calculation analysis suggests that groove design of drive roller and range of round section sizes should be the important consideration for the determination of hot pressure, and there always exists an optimum value for hot pressure when the machine equipments of round caster have been designed and installed. The model can provide a useful guideline for casting engineers to design the groove of drive roller and to determine reasonable safe hot pressure. Reliability of the model analysis has been verified by industrial application on a newly built round caster.
