The article is devoted to the publication of the materials of the settlement of the Early Iron Age near Ivanivka in the Tyasmyn river region. Archaeological reconnaissance here revealed the emergence of cultural strata, represented by animal bones, ceramic moldings and imported antique utensils, arrowheads, pins. The materials date back to the pre-Scythian and Scythian period: VIII—IV centuries BC.

This paper is concerned with analysis of the ethnopolitical situation on the Taman Peninsula and on the Lower Kuban River at the early stage of the occupation of the territory of the Asiatic Bosporos by the Greeks. In the author’s version, the ethnonim ‘Sinds’ is related with one of the groups among the nomads of the Samara-Ural region which about in 530 BC, under the pressure of a new nomadic wave from the east (“Royal Scythians”) moved in the western direction and occupied the free area in the region of the Cimmerian Bosporos. By the beginning of the 5th century BC, the Sinds evidently attained a dominating position among the barbarian tribes on the Lower Kuban River and entered into a military-political alliance with neighbouring Bosporan cities directed against the Scythian expansion. Analysis of burial traditions allows us to associate with the Sinds not only the famous Semibratniye barrows but also a series of adobe tombs with burials of mounted warriors of the 5th century BC.

Focusing on the interplay between memory and place, this article examines the rationale behind the use of axonometric drawings (axons) in a geographical research study of the Tumen/Tuman River region encompassing the borders shared by China, Russia and North Korea. The concepts of “memory of place” and “place of memory” guide the structure of this project and the flow of this article. “Memory of place” emphasises the lived experience of our physical senses, and helps determine the great potential of visual methodologies in the fields of geographical and landscape research and study. Drawn up using the graphic production techniques of abstracting, foregrounding, highlighting and juxtaposing, axons avail themselves of and inform both realist and idealist states of mind. In contrast, “place of memory” references a particular type of materiality and helps us understand Tumen Shan-shui as a library of memories that reveals a profusion of contested aesthetic, cultural and political meanings. Axons serve to tell narratives revealing desires, actions and undertakings that have shaped and continue to shape the substance of the memory sites in question including infrastructure, architecture and signage. Initially adopted by the author as a medium for recording and communicating due to security restrictions imposed in the border areas in question, the creation of axons generated new insights on methods of documentation in landscape research, and the places and landscapes themselves.

In this paper the results are presented of estimation of T-year specific discharge of several streams in two regions in Slovakia. The Qmax time series used in the study were observed at water gauges from lowland Slovak part of the Morava River basin, and from the mountainous Belá River basin. For estimating the design values, we have studied the use of only one type of probability distribution, namely the Log-Pearson Type III Distribution (LP3 distribution). The use of only one type of distribution brings several benefits, e.g. possibility of the regionalization of the distribution parameters (in this study skew coefficient). In the first step the design values of the specific discharge series qmax (with historical data) were estimated and regional skew coefficients Gr of the LP3 distribution were computed. Regional skewness coefficient Gr was estimated to be 0.38 in the Morava River region, and 0.73 in the Belá River region. In many cases the estimate of the 1000-year specific discharge is two times higher than the value of the 100-year specific discharge. Then we have derived the empirical relations between station skew coefficient G and the elevation of the water gauge. In the second step we have derived the empirical relationships between 1000-years specific discharge q1000 and the elevation of the water gauge for both regions separately. The derived empirical regional equations can be used to estimate the 1000-years specific discharge of other streams in the region.

In order to determine the possibility of using the method of mathematical modeling for making long-term forecasts of channel deformations of trunk line underwater crossing (TLUC) through water obstacles, a methodology for performing and analyzing the results of mathematical modeling of channel deformations in the TLUC zone across the Kuban River is considered. Within the framework of the work, the following tasks were solved: 1) the format and composition of the initial data necessary for mathematical modeling were determined; 2) the procedure for assigning the boundaries of the computational domain of the model was considered, the computational domain was broken down into the computational grid, the zoning of the computational domain was performed by the value of the roughness coefficient; 3) the analysis of the results of modeling the water flow was carried out without taking the bottom deformations into account, as well as modeling the bottom deformations, the specifics of the verification and calibration calculations were determined to build a reliable mathematical model; 4) considered the possibility of using the method of mathematical modeling to check the stability of the bottom in the area of TLUC in the presence of man-made dumping or protective structure. It has been established that modeling the flow hydraulics and structure of currents, making short-term forecasts of local high-altitude reshaping of the bottom, determining the tendencies of erosion and accumulation of sediments upstream and downstream of protective structures are applicable for predicting channel deformations in the zone of the TLUC. In all these cases, it is mandatory to have materials from engineering-hydro-meteorological and engineering-geological surveys in an amount sufficient to compile a reliable mathematical model.
