The article touches upon the problem of the rational use of fish stocks in fishing water bodies, which implies using modern accounting methods for fish abundance and fish stocks. To this end, instrumental surveys are carried out. In the fishing rivers of Kazakhstan (the Zhayik and Kigash Rivers) there was previously used the biostatistical method of accounting based on data from fishing statistics. The statistical data have recently become unreliable, since they do not take into account the illegal, unregulated and unreported catch. Instead of the biostatistical method, it has been proposed to use the time-based method which considers the fish that have passed along the river for a certain period of time and extrapolating these data for the entire duration of the fish run. The results of using the method to estimate the abundance of semi-anadromous fish species in the Zhaiyk River in the spring of 2019 are shown. There has been developed the method determining the catchability of a commercial seine on the river by conducting simultaneous fishing with two seines following one after another. For each fish species in the catch, the catch coefficient should be calculated separately. Examples of calculating the abundance, ichthyomass, and commercial stocks of various fish species (roach, sazan, bream, asp, crucian carp, sabrefish, catfish) that entered the river in the spring of 2019 are presented. There is found a difference in the values of the commercial fish stocks determined by the time-based and biostatistical methods, due to the lack of the subjective component of the forecast.

Anthropogenic Influence on the Dynamics of the River Lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis Landings in the River Daugava Basin The construction of the Daugava hydro power station (HPS) cascade has significantly transformed Latvia's largest river the Daugava, reducing its importance in the natural reproduction of anadromous fish species. Currently in Latvia, as well as in other Baltic Sea countries, the river lamprey catch is decreasing, whereas the landings in the river Daugava have tended to increase. The dynamics of the river lamprey landings show the possible redistribution of lamprey stocks between the rivers Gauja and the Daugava. Possibly, this is a result of anthropogenic influence and changes in the river lamprey resource management may be necessary in the future.

Abstract Anadromous populations of striped bass occur along the Atlantic coast of the US from Maine to North Carolina. Recruitment overfishing and declining water quality led to substantial reductions in striped bass abundance during the 1970s and 1980s. Cooperative interstate fishery management of striped bass began in 1981, with the development of a fishery management plan by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, an organization of Atlantic coastal states. Effective fishery management and additional research and monitoring contributed to a tenfold increase in abundance of striped bass stocks by the late 1990s. This dramatic increase resulted in increased predation on a variety of anadromous fish species including American shad, blueback herring, and alewives. Predation by striped bass on Atlantic salmon smolts in North America has been documented, but the impact of this predation has not been quantified. Moderate to strong correlations were found between estimates of striped bass abundance and the return of Atlantic salmon to three of the four major New England salmon rivers. Further research is required to quantify the proportion of smolt production consumed by striped bass, particularly for salmon populations listed as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act.

The low-depth Azov Sea coastal waters quality has been investigated. The sea faces considerable human-originated loads caused by the different origin pollutants river runoff. The river runoff pollutants comprise petroleum products, synthetic surface-active substances, phenols, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. Results of the investigation intended to affirm the suppositions on possibilities of the Azov Sea Temryuk Bay and Taganrog Bay coastal waters quality forecasting with the use of limited hydrological and hydro/chemical information obtained from the control stations have been presented. Comparison of the most significant water quality characteristics of river runoff and sea water has confirmed such a possibility. Further studies will be aimed at founding of the correlation dependencies for the most hazardous pollutants.
