Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to the fullerene family, also known as graphene. These graphenes are similar to the graphite sheets and when these are turn up in the cylindrical form they are known as carbon nanotubes. Currently, the most common methods used for CNTs preparation are: Electric-arc-discharge methods, Chemical-vapor-deposition method and Laserablation method. In order to cross the cell membrane, functionalization of the pristine CNTs is performed. Because of the sp2 hybridization and closely packed hexagons in their structure, functionalization of the pristine CNTs can be done easily with either therapeutic agent or the imaging agent. They have wide applications in the field of bio-imaging because of their intrinsic optical, mechanical and electrical properties. They can be used as efficient contrast agents and the biosensors as well as efficient carriers for the delivery of therapeutic or imaging agents.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are always produced under a reductive ambient with hydrogen present using the chemical vapor deposition method. Oxidative media, such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, could damage the tubular structures by opening the nanotube ends or etching the tube walls. Here we report the synthesis of aligned defective, but clean, CNTs in the presence of water vapor. The tube walls were found broken as well as the tube ends. CNTs with a large amount of exposed broken sites on their tube walls have potential applications in many areas such as energy storage.

A simple and reliable welding method was developed to weld carbon nanotubes with the power supply here. The carbon nanotubes were synthesized chemical vapor deposition method and Multi-walled carbon nanotubes was uesd here. Firstly, apply less than 5 V voltages between carbon nanotubes when they were in close proximity under direct view of optical microscope. Then, let carbon nanotube contact with each other and increase the external voltage to 7–8V until carbon nanotube was attached to the end of the other, the two carbon nanotube join into a carbon nanotube. Furthermore, some experiments were implemented to analyze the reliability, the images of the weld joint and the weld strength all indicted this method were reliable.
