Kesimpulannya, ekstrak metanol memiliki kapasitas antioksidan yang paling tinggi dibandingkan dengan ekstrak etanol dan etilasetat. Abstract Free Radical Scavenging Activity and Reducing Power of Akway (Drimys piperita Hook. f.) Bark ExtractsAkway (Drimys piperita Hook. f) was a woody and aromatic plant of winteraceae. This plant was used as traditional medical plant to heal malaria and to enhance vitality of body. Some studies were done to know bioactivity potency of akway extracts. D. piperita bark extract contains alkaloid, saponin, tanin, flavonoid, terpenoid and glycoside. The bark essential oil of the plant consists of lynalool, β-pinene, α-pinene, nerolidol and terpineol. Those compounds were exhibited high antioxidant activity. The objectives of this research were to determine total phenol and flavonoid of the extracts and its antioxidant capacity which was compared to antioxidant capacity of vitamin C. The assay of antioxidant capacity comprised of total phenol and flavonoid content, free radical scavenging activity, and reducing power. Total phenol and flavonoid was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride method, respectively while determination of free radical scavenging activity and reducing power using DPPH-radical scavenging and Fe+3 to Fe+2 reducing power method, respectively. The results indicated that methanol extract had the highest in total phenol and flavonoid content. Total phenol and flavonoid of methanol extract were 18.22% and 14.32%, respectively. Vitamin C and methanol extract had the highest DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl)-radical scavenging activity and reducing power, respectively. DPPH-radical scavenging activity of methanol extract and vitamin C in concentration of 200 µg/ml were 90% and 88.31%, respectively while its reducing power were 0.54 and 0,62, respectively. As conclusion, methanol extract had the highest antioxidant activity compared with ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts.

Objective: This study was aimed to isolate and identify the chemical compounds from the methanol extract of the stems of Etlingera calophrys as well as to evaluate their potential as free radical scavengers. Methods: The isolated compounds were obtained using vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and radial chromatography techniques. The structures of these compounds were determined on the basis of their measured spectroscopic evidence (infrared, one dimentional (1D), and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance) and by comparison with literature data. The free radical scavenging activity of the methanol extract of the stems and the isolated compounds were measured using qualitative and quantitative 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Results: Yakuchinone A (1), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), and stigmasterol (3) were successfully isolated and identified from the stems of E. calophyrs. The methanol extract and compounds 1–3 showed free radical scavenging activity with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 38.36, 39.07, 46.60, and 153.4 μg/mL, respectively, as compared to ascorbic acid with an IC50 value of 10.53 μg/mL. Conclusions: Yakuchinone A (1) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (2) are first reported from the genus Etlingera. The presence of these compounds may contribute to the free radical scavenging activity of the methanol extract of the stems of E. calophrys. This finding suggested that E. calophrys may serve as a source of natural antioxidant compounds and could be used in the development of antioxidant herbal preparation.

Objective: The objectives of the study were to investigate phytochemical screening and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) profiling of twigs and leaves of Exocarpos longifolius and its 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity. Methods: Phytochemical screening covering saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and tannins were carried out by standard methods. The free radical scavenging activity was performed by thin-layer chromatography - bioautography, followed by determining the IC50 values of active extracts. Chemical compounds of active extract were examined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed that all extracts have been shown to contain tannins and terpenoids, saponins were found in the methanol extract of twigs, and alkaloids were found in the ethyl acetate extracts of twigs and leaves, while flavonoids were found in the methanol extract and ethyl acetate extracts of twigs and leaves of E. longifolius. Ethyl acetate extract of twigs showed the best of IC50 value (15.65 μg/mL), while ethyl acetate extract of leaves and methanol extract of twigs have strong free radical scavenging activity which IC50 were 78.59 and 67.24 μg/mL, respectively. The GC-MS analysis of ethyl acetate extract of twigs has shown the presence of 12 identified compounds, and the main chemical compound is Stigmast-4-en-3-one (21.91%).Conclusions: The ethyl acetate extract of E. longifolius showed a very powerful free radical scavenging activity and revealed chemical compounds had been known to have biological activity. It might be used as a natural antioxidant.
