Number plate recognition brings a drastic improvement for the city traffic enhancement. It provides the direction in which the steps should be taken for working of an effective intelligent transportation system. ANPR have become necessity for traffic control management due to rapid increment of vehicles. The main aim of ANPR is to monitor traffic and for security purpose. Recognition of number plate uses image processing techniques and latest technology in detecting characters on vehicle license plates automatically. In recent years, there are many technological developments in recognizing license plate area of research. Image processing protocols like OCR technology allow the traffic surveillance to deal with several problems that occurs in criminal investigation, toll collection, monitoring traffic, controlling speed, parking management etc. For efficient management of traffic and mass surveillance in transportation system, an ANPR system is essential. With the aid of image processing algorithms and vehicle images dataset, it becomes possible to monitor traffic at a large scale. Vehicle images are helpful for recognizing characters on license plates by performing image segmentation, feature extraction and character recognition. Data collected through captured images are utilized in the commercial applications, law enforcement, traffic applications etc. The software examines the vehicle picture as an input image that results in displaying the plate numbers. The system with image processing used reliably for traffic detection where modification of the technologies enables an accurate acknowledgement of vehicle number plates. There are several ANPR systems developed, working on character recognition of LP by the help of image processing technique. This paper reviews the performance by researchers in this particular area towards meeting goals of transportation system. It also provides major issues and challenges in this field.

The vehicle license plate recognition system is the intelligent traffic management system based on the image and the character recognition technology, which is an important part of the intelligent transportation system. This paper introduces a method of vehicle license plate location based on edge detection and morphological operations, virtual instrument is combined with machine vision of the license plate recognition method [1]. Finally the license plate number of the vehicle is get. Experiment results show that such method can simplify the algorithm and has some correct location rate.

Image processing-based vehicle recognition is one of the important research fields in ITS. The existing methods are all based on license plate recognition and car shape recognition. Their common problem is algorithm stability. And the license plates are easy to be changed. All information about vehicles should be used to recognize them reliably. A problem to be solved is to find a method to recognize vehicles besides license plate recognition and vehicle model recognition. Vehicle license plate location and character segmentation are critical steps in the license plate recognition system, and yet there are difficult problems to be solved. Automatic vehicle license plate is an important part of intelligent transportation system. The success of the plate recognition will have a deep impact on the construction of intelligent transport systems. Image processing, tilt correction, character delimitation, character recognition and matching are main applications of vehicle license plate recognition, and the above process are implemented in matlab environment. Vehicle license plate location is implemented by vehicle license plate locating method based on edge detection and morphology filter in this article. The tilt correction mode based on Hough transform is used for license plate tilt correction section; character delimitation algorithm is used for character delimitation to achieve the vehicle license plate character segmentation; character recognition method based on template matching is chosen for character recognition section in this article, and successfully identify the license plate number.


License plate recognition system plays very important role in various security aspects which includes entry monitoring of a particular vehicle in commercial complex, traffic monitoring , identification of threats and many more. In past few years many different methods has been adopted for license plate recognition system but still there is little more chance to work on real time difficulties which come across while license plate recognition like speed of vehicle, angle of license plate in picture, background of picture or color contrast of image, reflection on the license plate and so on. The combination of object detection, image processing, and pattern recognition are used to fulfill this application. In the proposed architecture , system will capture a small video and using Google's OCR(Optical Character Recognition) system will recognize license number, if that number get found in database gate will get open with the help of Arduino Uno.

In order to reduce the traffic jam, save time and to diminish the money loss of 300 crores/year, an automated system is proposed; The intelligent traffic control management systems which explains the installation of automation in toll plazas, which is a step towards improving the monitoring of vehicles. The main purpose of this arrangement is to implement a system, which automatically identifies an approaching vehicle and records the vehicles number and time. If the vehicle belongs to an authorized person, the toll gate opens automatically and a predetermined amount is deducted from the user account, which leads to reduce the Traffic clogging at toll plazas. The vehicle number plate recognition is done only for authorized members. The proposed model consists of image digitization, edge detection, character detection and recognition with the payment transaction. The proposed method uses morphological edge detection , for the system to identify the character recognition and it uses template matching; it is done for license plates of 6 characters. The license plate character recognition system can be used in vehicle check -in and checkout monitoring system in hotels, malls and can be used to track vehicles on normal roads other than toll booths to avoid thefts.


An automatic license number plate recognition system that uses image processing technology for identifying the written characters and numbers on the vehicle’ license plate. The system can be used in highly secured areas to provide more safety, and can be used in parking, traffic, and other places to monitor all vehicle’s number plate in a predefined area. The character is recognized by the OCR technology that is optical character recognition system. It generates the vehicle’s license plate number in a text format. The recognized number from the license plate then can be used to retrieve more information about the vehicle and the owner.

Automatic License Plate Recognition is related to the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that supports the road's e-law enforcement system. In the case of the Indonesian license plate, with various colour rules for font and background, and sometimes vehicle owners modify their license plate font format, this is a challenge in the image processing approach. This research utilizes pre-trained of AlexNet, VGGNet, and ResNet to determine the optimum model of Indonesian character license plate recognition. Three pre-trained approaches in CNN-based detection for reducing time for a build if model from scratch. The experiment shows that using the pre-trained ResNet model gives a better result than another two approaches. The optimum results were obtained at epoch 50 with an accuracy of 99.9% and computation time of 26 minutes. This experiment results fulfil the goal of this research. Vehicle License plate recognition system includes license plate location, character segmentation, character recognition three important aspects. Image Processing is the VLPRS is one of the three key technologies, this gray-scale transformation of the image, contrast enhancement, image smoothing, edge detection, binarization and other methods were discussed and studied through the Image Processing technology to improve image Quality, strengthen the image area. Experimental results show that this treatment method is simple, real time, dealing with the right rate to achieve a practical standard.


This paper discusses about License plate recognition using digital processing of images, where the image of a vehicle is taken and the number plate is then recognized by various layers of digital image processing. The number plate is then allowed to undergo optical character recognition (OCR), this extracts the data and then compares it with a database containing the details of the vehicle. This allows the user to identify the type of vehicle and the identity of the person who is driving the vehicle. It will denote the user about the registration of the vehicle by comparing it with the database of the registered vehicle in the area. The device will consist of a camera which will take the real time footage of the vehicles and a snap from the video of the vehicle is used to recognize the number plate. The processor will process the images and will display the number of the vehicle and the owner of the vehicle in the display, this is achieved by comparing the number of the vehicle with the previously fed data from the database. This device will provide an efficient way for automating a parking system where there will be no need for a human to interfere with the checking of the vehicle and providing passes for the vehicle.

Image processing technique in general, involves the application of signal processing on the input image for isolating the individual color plane of an image. It plays an important role in the image analysis and computer version. This paper compares the efficiency of two approaches in the area of finding breast cancer in medical image processing. The fundamental target is to apply an image mining in the area of medical image handling utilizing grouping guideline created by genetic algorithm. The parameter using extracted border, the border pixels are considered as population strings to genetic algorithm and Ant Colony Optimization, to find out the optimum value from the border pixels. We likewise look at cost of ACO and GA also, endeavors to discover which one gives the better solution to identify an affected area in medical image based on computational time.
