In this paper, we discuss three issues of current debate about financial accounting research. Firstly, we discuss the popularity of quantitative methods in financial accounting and the research limitations related to this dominance. As second issue, we critically discuss the epistemological approach underlying research methodologies. Finally, we discuss the practical implications of current financial accounting research and the need to search for a real impact factor besides the academic contribution.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide an overview of the development of public sector accounting research in Indonesia. The method used in this research is charting the field. Samples taken came from 22 accredited journals of Indonesia and 137 articles written during 2010-2018. This study classifies articles based on research topics and methods. The results of this study indicate that the topic most widely used in public sector accounting research is the topic of financial accounting and for models that are often used are quantitative methods as well as survey and archival methods. The topic of financial accounting in the public sector is the most researched topic because accounting in the public sector is still a particular concern and many local governments are constrained by financial reporting. Meanwhile, from the research topics, at least seven of the categories were taxation and accounting systems.

Purpose – The purposes of this paper are to highlight those topics of forensic accounting that have received little or no attention in the forensic accounting research that has been published in forensic accounting research journals; discover what research methods have been most commonly used; and identify research methods that have been infrequently used. Design/methodology/approach – This is a descriptive research study that explores the topics and methods used in forensic accounting research published in forensic accounting journals. Findings – Fraud and quantitative methods make up the largest percentage of topics and research methods published in forensic accounting journals. Research limitations/implications – Limited to forensic accounting journals. Results suggest forensic accounting researchers are using mimetic topics and methods of accounting research. The absence of diversity in forensic accounting research topics and methods has the potential to compromise the overall contribution of forensic accounting research. Practical implications – This paper identifies gaps in topics and research methods in forensic accounting research to encourage research in diverse topics using diverse methods that will be valuable to forensic accountants. Originality/value – This original research is the first to survey and classify research published in forensic accounting journals according to topic and method.

Current financial accounting research has paid little attention to the philosophical aspects that underlie the research, Hence, the existing results provide a little contribution towards the development of accounting theory and concepts. This article aims to describe the philosophical basis in financial accounting research, which consists of ontology, epistemology and axiology. The ontology and epistemology assumptions determine research paradigm, which are functionalist, interpretive and critical (radical humanist and radical structuralist). The ontology and epistemology assumptions also define the research methodology. This article outlines the taxonomy of financial accounting research formulated by Hopper and Powel (1985) and Laughlin (1995) which can be used as a guide in conducting financial accounting research. Understanding of philosophical aspects will result in high quality financial accounting research.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand whether managerial behavior in impairing goodwill arising from M & As has changed after the adoption of IAS/IFRS, searching for evidences of earnings management (EM) practices. Thus, our goal is to provide a response to the following research questions. Are goodwill impairments used by listed firms’ managers to manipulate earnings? If so, what kind of EM practice is mostly used? Design/methodology/approach – In this paper the authors tested the following hypothesis: H1. In the year of the deal’s closure and in the following four years, the management detects impairment of goodwill in difformity with the previous Italian regulations and related accounting practices. Moreover, the authors tried to determine, for each considered firms, potential symptoms of typical DEM practices widely debated in the financial accounting literature (income smoothing, income minimization, income minimization, or big bath accounting). Findings – Our analysis does not prove evidence of certain EM practices, but it highlights very clearly that, after the adoption of IAS/IFRS, managers’ behavior has deeply changed. Moreover, the analysis shows that there is no univocal choice in favor of a specific EM practice and that every firm pursues its own “strategy.” Originality/value – Considering the importance of the topic from both the perspectives of managerial (with regard to M & As valuation processes) and financial accounting (with regard to intangibles valuation fulfilled by applying the impairment test instead of the amortization), this work aims to provide a multi-dimensional contribution to the current debate.
