Mixed-ligand ternary complexes of Cu (II) metal ion with 1,2,4 triazole (TRZ) and amino acids (histidine (L1), threonine (L2), proline (L3) and hydroxyl proline (L4)) have been synthesized. The prepared ternary chelates were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectra, as well as conductivity measurements. The general formula [Cu(TRZ)L]H2O were found for the ternary chelates containing TRZ. From the analytical and spectral data, the stoichiometry has been found to be 1:1:1 for all the complexes. A tetrahedral geometry has been proposed. Molecular modeling studies were also carried out to confirm the geometries of the complexes. All the new complexes were found to be active against bacteria. © 2014 JSR Publications. ISSN: 2070-0237 (Print); 2070-0245 (Online). The Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonylhydrazone are described. It has been found that the ligand can coordinate to metal ion as a monobasic bidentate chelating agent and it can form di- and trinuclear complexes while acting as a dibasic tetradentate one. The structure of the isolated complexes have been suggested on the basis of elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy and conductivity measurements. The complexes are all formulated as four-coordinate. Some complexes showed enhanced antimicrobial activity relative to the free ligand.

The formation constants of the binary and ternary complexes of palladium(II) with diethylenetriamine and amino acids as ligands have been determined potentiometrically at 25 °C in 0.1 M NaNO3 solution. The relative stability of each ternary complex was compared with that of the corresponding binary complexes in terms of ∆logK values. The mode of chelation was ascertained by conductivity measurements.

The ternary complexes of formulae cis-[(NH3)2Pt(nucl)(amac)]NO3, where nucl = guo and cyd (guanosine and cytidine) and amac = the deprotonated aminoacids glycine (gly), L-alanine (ala), L-2-aminobutyric acid (2-aba), L-norvaline (nval) and L-norleucine (nleu), were prepared from the reactions of the binary chelated ones cis-[(NH3)2Pt(amac)]NO3 with the nucleosides. They were characterized by H1, C13 and Pt195 NMR and IR spectra, together with elemental analysis and conductivity measurements. The aminoacids coordinate with Pt(II) in the ternary complexes with their terminal -NH2 groups, guo through N7 and cyd through N3. Ligand-ligand hydrophobic interactions were also observed in the ternary complexes and were stronger with longer aliphatic chains of the aminoacids. The E3 sugar conformation increased by 5-7% in the ternary systems, as compared to the free nucleosides, while the percentage of the gg conformation remained almost constant and the one of the anti conformation of the sugar increased also slightly. Finally, the h conformer around the Cα-Cβ bonds of the aminoacids reached a maximum in the binary systems and decreased again considerably in the ternary ones.

Nickel is one of the essential trace elements found in biological systems. It is mostly found in nickel-based enzymes as an essential cofactor. It forms coordination complexes with amino acids within enzymes. Nickel is also present in nucleic acids, though its function in DNA or RNA is still not clearly understood. In this study, complex formation tendencies of Ni(II) with adenine and certain L-amino acids such as aspartic acid, glutamic acid, asparagine, leucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan were investigated in an aqueous medium. Potentiometric equilibrium measurements showed that both binary and ternary complexes of Ni(II) form with adenine and the above-mentioned L-amino acids. Ternary complexes of Ni(II)-adenine-L-amino acids are formed by stepwise mechanisms. Relative stabilities of the ternary complexes are compared with those of the corresponding binary complexes in terms ofΔlog10⁡K,log10⁡X, and % RS values. It was shown that the most stable ternary complex is Ni(II):Ade:L-Asn while the weakest one is Ni(II):Ade:L-Phe in aqueous solution used in this research. In addition, results of this research clearly show that various binary and ternary type Ni(II) complexes are formed in different concentrations as a function of pH in aqueous solution.

A new complexes of the type ML2 and M′L [where M=Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) and M′= Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II)]. L = 3-[(2-hydroxy-quinolin-3-ylmethylene)-amino]-2-phenyl-3H-quinazolin-4-one, (HQMAPQ) Schiff base have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, IR,1H NMR, UV-Visible and ESR data. The studies indicate the HQMAPQ acts as doubly monodentate bridge for metal(II) ions and form mononuclear complexes. The complexes Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes are found to be octahedral, where as Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes are four coordinated with tetrahedral geometry. The synthesized ligand and its metal(II) complexes were screened for their antimicrobial activity.
