Six parental lines along with their F1 and F2 progenies were investigated for general combining ability (GCA) effects on embryo-like-structure (ELS) production in anther culture. Significant differences were found among the parents in respect to the ELS production. Evaluating the combining ability effects, among the female parents Alfold showed the best result in ELS production, while Palma was the best among the male lines. While comparing F1 and F2 generations, in most of the cases (except one) F2 generation was superior in ELS production. Polygenic effect plays a key role in such type of superiority in the F2 generation. Physio-chemical properties of hybrid chilies (Capsicum annuum L.), parental lines and commercial varieties were evaluated in three experiments and showed significant differences among them. Heterosis, and heterobeltiosis were studied in hybrids while, combining abilities were investigated in maintainers and restorers. Positive statistical differences in the general combining ability of the maintainer lines for vitamin C, capsaicin and Hue were observed and general combining ability indicated that, CA1286 and CA1303, were good maintainers for the improvement of capsaicin and vitamin C. The other maintainers;-, CA1441 and CA1442, are good for the improvement of L* and Chroma. The maintainer, CA1441, was better than CA1442 for capsaicin content,- while the maintainer, CA1442, was better than CA1441 for vitamin C. Positivity and statistically significant differences among the restorers were  observed  for vitamin C, capsaicin, Hue and Chroma  and  the lines;-, CA 1447, CA 1448, CA 1449, CA 1450 and CA 1451, were useful for the improvement of these  physio-chemical properties of chilies.

The objective of the study was to investigate efficiency of anther culture in the production of spontaneous double haploids from randomly selected heterozygous genotypes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Anthers of 20 F1 wheat combinations were grown in vitro on a modified Potato-2 medium. All of the examined genotypes have shown the ability to produce pollen calluses as well as to regenerate green plants. On average for the whole experiment material, 47.2 calluses were produced per 100 cultured anthers. The green plant regeneration ranged from 0.8 to 13.4 green plants per spike, with an overall mean of 5.8. From the total of 582 regenerated green plants, 47.9% (279) were spontaneous double haploids. The final average yield from the study was 2.8 double haploids per spike.

We investigated the anther culture (AC) efficiency of thirteen F<sub>4</sub> combinations of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The genotype dependency was assessed during the induction of the androgenic entities, i.e. embryo-like structures (ELS), regenerated-, green-, albino-, and transplanted plantlets. The number of green plantlets per 100 anthers (GP/100A) varied from 0.36 to 24.74 GP/100A with a mean of 8.31 GP/100A. Albino plantlets (AP) occurred in each combination, ranging from 0.20 to 22.80 AP/100A with an average value of 5.59 AP/100A. Between 25–87.76 doubled haploid (DH) plants per 100 acclimatised plantlets (DH/100ADP), depending on the combination, with a mean of 59.74% were recovered. We have found the highest DH production in the combinations Béres/Midas, Kalász/Tacitus, Béres/Pamier, and Premio/5009. This improves remarkably the choice of basic genetic material in subsequent crossing programmes. These observations emphasise the usability and efficiency of in vitro AC in producing a large number of DH lines for breeding and the applied researches of winter wheat. Although albinism was found in each combination, it was mitigated by the in vitro AC application.

Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) resistance or tolerance in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., is often associated with extreme pubescence. This is undesirable because hairy (pubescent) plants tend to have more trash in harvested lint which reduces the price received by growers. Two other possible sources of resistance include gossypol and thick lower epidermal cells, the latter has been found in G. barbadense L. Five G. barbadense genotypes were mated in a North Carolina Design II to 4 upland cultivars to evaluate combining ability. In addition, 90 converted racestocks were screened for tolerance to thrips. Experiments were designed to evaluate tolerance or resistance by comparing plots with and without thrips. Two G. barbadense parents had tolerance to thrips while two upland cultivars also exhibited tolerance. In the F1 generation, general combining ability was significant for thrips damage ratings among the G. barbadense parents. In the F2 generation, all characters exhibited specific combining ability. Thus, non-additive genetic variance predominates measures of thrips tolerance.

Abstract A hybridization program was initiated to investigate the breeding potential of crosses among diverse peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) lines. Fifteen crosses in F2 generation generated by crossing six peanut lines representing Valencia, Virginia, and Spanish botanical varieties in diallel without reciprocals were used to estimate combining ability in drilled and space-planted tests. Estimates of both general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability were significant for percent extra large kernels, percent sound mature kernels, kernels/kg, pod length, and yield measured in the drilled test. The GCA estimates were also significant for all characters measured in the space-planted test, while estimates of SCA were significant for five of the six characters. Estimates of GCA were of greater magnitude than SCA estimates for all characters except one. A Spanish line, C2, had the highest GCA effects for yield and sound mature kernels in both drilled and space-planted tests. Although most F2 cross means, especially for the intersubspecific crosses, were less than the midparent value, the presence of transgressive segregants indicated an opportunity for breeding improvement. The depression of F2 means probably resulted from recombination of genes responsible for adaptation of the parental lines. Comparison of results from the space-planted and drilled tests indicates that data from space-planted tests can provide useful information on the performance of crosses in early generation.

RFLP analyses were used to characterize several plant populations of Solanum chacoense Bitt. developed to investigate the generation of new S alleles at the self-incompatibility locus. The plant material consisted of two diploid parental lines, their anther culture derived (AC) progenies, their selfed progenies, and their reciprocal F1 hybrids. The RFLP analyses on the AC plants (121 individuals in total) permitted unambiguous identification of their origin. In particular, a distinction between plants originated from reduced (n) or unreduced (2n) microspores could be made. All the AC plants produced by gametic embryogenesis showed distinct RFLP patterns, whereas a number of clones (i.e., plants with identical RFLP patterns) were found among those regenerated via callus. The analyses conducted on the selfed progenies (69 plants) and the F1 hybrids (66 plants) showed only one case of accidental outcross. Segregation studies of the RFLP markers revealed significant deviations from expected Mendelian ratios in both AC-derived populations, as well as in the selfed progenies. Such deviations, however, were rare in the reciprocal F1 hybrids. These results are discussed in relation to the possible presence of genetic sieves operating during AC, illegitimate selfing, or during normal fertilization.Key words: anther culture, RFLP markers, distorted segregation, self-incompatibility, Solanum chacoense, wild potato.

AbstractGenetic improvement of rice for grain micronutrients, viz., iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content is one of the important breeding objectives, in addition to yield improvement under the irrigated and aerobic ecosystems. In view of developing genetic resources for aerobic conditions, line (L) × tester (T) analysis was conducted with four restorers, four CMS lines and 16 hybrids. Both hybrids and parental lines were evaluated in irrigated and aerobic field conditions for grain yield, grain Fe and Zn content. General Combining Ability (GCA) effects of parents and Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effects of hybrids were observed to be contrasting for the micronutrient content in both the growing environments. The grain Fe and Zn content for parental lines were negatively correlated with grain yield in both the contrasting growing conditions. However, hybrids exhibited positive correlation for grain Fe and Zn with grain yield under limited water conditions. The magnitude of SCA mean squares was much higher than GCA mean squares implying preponderance of dominance gene action and also role of complementary non-allelic gene(s) interaction of parents and suitability of hybrids to the aerobic system. The testers HHZ12-SAL8-Y1-SAL1 (T1) and HHZ17-Y16-Y3-Y2 (T2) were identified as good combiners for grain Zn content under irrigated and aerobic conditions respectively.

<p>This study investigated the effects of open- and self-pollination treatments on genetic estimations and kernel biochemical content in a maize diallel experiment. A 7×7 complete reciprocal diallel set (7 parents and 42 hybrids) was used as plant material. Measured traits were: kernel weight per plant, protein content, oil content and carbohydrate content. General combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), maternal effects (MAT), non-maternal effects (NMAT) and heterosis values were compared in open- and self-pollination treatments for measured traits. Results showed that the pollination treatments had a significant effect on all investigated traits. Parental lines and hybrid combinations gave different responses. Parents had relatively higher protein and oil content in self-pollination but hybrids had lower values in self-pollination compared with open-pollination. A considerable number of genotypes showed significant differences for genetic estimations (GCA, SCA, MAT, NMAT) and heterosis between open- and self-pollination treatments. Overall, findings suggest that evaluation of kernel quality traits should be made on selfed ear samples; however, evaluation for yield should be carried out on open-pollinated samples.</p>
