The distribution of the light yield and luminescence intensity along LYSO:Ce crystal length is investigated. These distributions, determined by different defects and emission centers of the dopant in the crystalline structure and its distribution along the length, is measured by two methods: the gamma spectroscopy using radiation sources and the optical spectroscopy using ultraviolet sources. It is shown that crystals have considerable variation of the light yield and luminescence intensity both over the length of an individual crystal (in the growing direction) and for different crystals. It is established that the correction factors for the segmented calorimeter of the COMET experiment can be obtained using optical spectroscopy methods. Consideration of the correction factors will significantly reduce an error of energy measurement in a segmented calorimeter during data handling.

ABSTRACTCerium fluoride offers a reasonable compromise between parameters like the density, the light yield, the scintillation characteristics (particularly the decay time) and the radiation hardness, and is considered today as the best candidate for large electromagnetic calorimeters in future High Energy Physics experiments. Details on the performances of large crystals produced by different manufacturers all over the world and measured by the Crystal Clear collaboration will be shown and the usefulness of a good collaboration between the industry and the users will be highlighted by some examples on the light yield and radiation hardness improvement.

A gamma spectrometer based on LaBr3(Ce) crystal has been developed. The spectrometer uses a compact data acquisition system including a multi-channel analyzer and corresponding electronics components. The response function of the detector has been simulated using Monte Carlo Code (MCNPX 2.7E). It has been also tested, at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology radiation facilities, using a series of gamma radiation sources. The simulated data has been compared with experiments and a good agreement has been achieved. This paper presents the parameters of the developed spectrometer and the results of its testing along with a comparison with NaI(TI) crystal.
