The layered, machinable ternary compound, Ti3AlC2, was corrosion-tested at 800, 900, and 1000oC under an Ar-1% SO2 gas atmosphere. The scale formed consisted primarily of TiO2 and α-Al2O3. As the corrosion progressed, the scale became thicker and developed into an outer TiO2 layer and an inner (TiO2,Al2O3)-mixed layer.

Three types of L12-type Al3Ti-Cr alloys, of compositions 67Al-25Ti-8Cr, 66Al-24Ti- 10Cr, and 59Al-26Ti-15Cr in atomic percent, were corrosion tested at 900, 1000, and 1100oC in an Ar-1% SO2 gas atmosphere for up to 150 h. The alloys were resistant to corrosion because a thin Al2O3 barrier layer was formed on the alloy surface due to the high Al content in the alloys. Due to the very strong Al affinity for oxygen, virtually no sulfur was detected inside the oxide scale.

AbstractThe paper presents the microstructure, chemical and phase composition of thin scale, obtained as a result of high-temperature corrosion of X20Cr13 stainless steel. Samples were exposed to gas atmosphere of the following composition: 0.25 vol.% of SO2and 99.75 vol.% of Ar at 600 °C for 5 h. As a consequence, thin compact scale was formed on steel surface. This scale consisted of three different zones. An amorphous zone was formed close to steel surface. Then, nanocrystalline zone could be observed. Finally, larger grains were formed during the corrosion process. The analysis of the chemical composition revealed higher concentration of chromium near steel surface. In contrast, to chromium, the content of iron, increased near the scale surface. It was found out that the (Cr, Mn, Fe)5O12phase appeared in the thin scale.

The Ni-base superalloy, INCONEL740, whose major alloying elements are 24.31 wt.%Cr-20 wt.%Co, was corroded in an Ar-0.2%SO2-gas atmosphere between 800 and 1000oC for 50, and 100 hr in an electric furnace. The scales formed after SO2-gas corrosion tests were generally adherent at 800 and 900oC. At 1000oC, massive scale spallation however occurred over the entire surface. The scales consisted of Cr2O3, (Ni,Co)Cr2O4, and TiO2, indicating that not sulfidation but an oxidation reaction prevailed owing to the thermodynamic stability of concerning oxides.

High temperature corrosion of metal material was found on the side water-walls of a swirl-opposed firing supercritical boiler. The gas atmosphere near the side wall has great relationship with the high temperature corrosion. Test holes were installed on the side walls to form an experimental system. The gas compositions near the side walls were analyzed under different combustion conditions. High CO concentration is detected near the side walls. The effects of the operation states of burners on the CO concentration near side walls were tested. High over-fire air quantity results in strong reducing atmosphere of the test area. The adjusting method to control the atmosphere is suggested.
