Narratives for children about Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile (1973–89) written by the sons and daughters of that era constitute a recognised genre. For the most part the genre features boy characters who not only have voice and choice, but also unrealistically win the fight against the oppressors. This paper examines two of the rare works with girl protagonists, paying attention to how their voices are constructed: Mariana Osorio Gumá's Tal vez vuelvan los pájaros [Maybe the birds will return] (Mexico, 2013) and Matilde by Carola Martínez Arroyo (Argentina, 2016). I apply Deleuze's theories about the gaze to girls to identify patterns that afford the construction of ‘lucid’ protagonists in terms of recurring modes of language production (silence, ordered discourse, invention), giving rise to inquisitive girls. Through the construction of a girl's lucid gaze, which can withstand and narrate the horrors of the dictatorship, these novels offer young audiences a powerful space for historic and collective memory.

A suppressed collective memory of the 1960s and early 1970s is now emergent among all Chileans, at home and abroad, including those who once wished to forget or to deny the violence, division, and injustice of the Chilean dictatorship. The treatment of class conflict and social division in two films directed by Andrés Wood— Machuca and Violeta Went to Heaven—has contributed to this awakening, pointing out that cultural experiences and economic destiny in Chile have been determined by divided geographical spaces. La memoria colectiva de los años 60 y principios de los 70 en Chile, que había estado suprimida hasta ahora, está surgiendo entre todos los chilenos, dentro y fuera del país, incluso entre aquellos que una vez desearon olvidar o negar la violencia, las divisiones y las injusticias de la dictadura chilena. El tratamiento de los conflictos de clase y las divisiones sociales en dos películas dirigidas por Andrés Wood— Machuca y Violeta se fue a los cielos—ha contribuido a este despertar, al señalar que las experiencias culturales y el destino económico de Chile han sido determinados por unos espacios geográficos divididos.

Abstract Theatre can also be viewed as a collective archive that we go to when we need to better understand the world around us, artistic movements and trends, the state of mankind. Each participant in a theatrical act, whether spectator or creator, loads it with emotions and, therefore, with memories. Theatre, in all its forms, strengthens communities, and theatre festivals are a very good opportunity to popularize theatrical productions, from the level of some small communities, to the macro level. Diversity is an essential ingredient for stimulating imagination and a better understanding of an area of interest. This is why a theatre festival with international coverage, such as the International Theatre Festival for Young Audiences in Iasi (FITPTI), should make for its audience as many referrals as possible to the context and artistic life of a community as a whole. In order to achieve such an objective, in addition to the scenic representations, theatrical exhibitions, book launches, interactive installations, theatrical critique seminars, residences for young playwrights, reading shows are more than necessary. If we refer to the collective memory enriched by theatre, we could say that theatre shows have a short life. But, most of the times, those that really have a major impact and their creators are also found in books. And, it is known, books have a much longer life. FITPTI organizers understood this from the beginning and gave the theatre book an important place in the event.

Language sample analysis is considered one of the best methods of evaluating expressive language production in speaking children. However, the practice of language sample collection and analysis is complicated for speech-language pathologists working with children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. This article identifies six issues regarding use of language sample collection and analysis in clinical practice with children who use AAC devices. The purpose of this article is to encourage speech-language pathologists practicing in the area of AAC to utilize language sample collection and analysis as part of ongoing AAC assessment.

The aim of this study is to understand to what extent soliciting collective memory facilitates the appropriation of knowledge. After being informed about Milgram’s experiment on obedience to authority, students were asked to mention historical or contemporary events that came to mind while thinking about submission to authority. Main results of the factorial analysis show that the students who do not believe in the reproducibility of the experimental results oppose dramatic past events to a peaceful present, whereas those who do believe in the reproducibility of the results also mention dramatic contemporary events, thus linking past and present. Moreover, the students who do not accept the results for today personify historical events, whereas those who fully accept them generalize their impact. Therefore, according to their attitude toward this objet of knowledge, the students refer to two kinds of memory: a “closed memory,” which tends to relegate Milgram’s results to ancient history; and an “open memory,” which, on the contrary, transforms past events into a concept that helps them understand the present. Soliciting collective memory may contribute to the appropriation of knowledge provided the memory activated is an “open” one, linking past to present and going beyond the singularity of the event.

A picture naming experiment in Dutch tested whether disfluencies in speech can arise from difficulties in lexical access. Speakers described networks consisting of line drawings and paths connecting these drawings, and we manipulated picture name agreement. Consistent with our hypothesis, there were more pauses and more self-corrections in the low name agreement condition than the high name agreement condition, but there was no effect on repetitions. We also considered determiner frequency. There were more self-corrections and more repetitions when the picture name required the less frequent (neuter-gender) determiner “het” than the more frequent (common-gender) determiner “de”. These data suggest that difficulties in distinct stages of language production result in distinct patterns of disfluencies.
