In this paper, a new five-parameter distribution is proposed using the functionalities of the Kumaraswamy generalized family of distributions and the features of the power Lomax distribution. It is named as Kumaraswamy generalized power Lomax distribution. In a first approach, we derive its main probability and reliability functions, with a visualization of its modeling behavior by considering different parameter combinations. As prime quality, the corresponding hazard rate function is very flexible; it possesses decreasing, increasing and inverted (upside-down) bathtub shapes. Also, decreasing-increasing-decreasing shapes are nicely observed. Some important characteristics of the Kumaraswamy generalized power Lomax distribution are derived, including moments, entropy measures and order statistics. The second approach is statistical. The maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters are described and a brief simulation study shows their effectiveness. Two real data sets are taken to show how the proposed distribution can be applied concretely; parameter estimates are obtained and fitting comparisons are performed with other well-established Lomax based distributions. The Kumaraswamy generalized power Lomax distribution turns out to be best by capturing fine details in the structure of the data considered.

Even before its hundredth year anniversary on 16 May 2016, the Sykes-Picot agreement had become a widely cited historical analogy both in the region itself and in Europe and the United States. In the Middle East, it is frequently deployed as an infamous example of European imperial betrayal and Western attempts more generally to keep the region divided, in conflict, and easy to dominate. In Europe and the United States, however, its role as a historical analogy is more complex—a shorthand for understanding the Middle East as irrevocably divided into mutually hostile sects and clans, destined to be mired in conflict until another external intervention imposes a new, more authentic, set of political units on the region to replace the postcolonial states left in the wake of WWI. What is notable about both these uses of the Sykes-Picot agreement is that they fundamentally misread, and thus overstate, its historical significance. The agreement reached by the British diplomat Mark Sykes and his French counterpart, François Georges-Picot, in May 1916, quickly became irrelevant as the realities on the ground in the Middle East, U.S. intervention into the war, a resurgent Turkey and the comparative weakness of the French and British states transformed international relations at the end of the First World War. Against this historical background, explaining the contemporary power of the narrative surrounding the use of the Sykes-Picot agreement becomes more intellectually interesting than its minor role in the history of European imperial interventions in the Middle East.

Ontology Matching aims to find the semantic correspondences between ontologies that belong to a single domain but that have been developed separately. However, there are still some problem areas to be solved, because experts are still needed to supervise the matching processes and an efficient way to reuse the alignments has not yet been found. We propose a novel technique named Reverse Ontology Matching, which aims to find the matching functions that were used in the original process. The use of these functions is very useful for aspects such as modeling behavior from experts, performing matching-by-example, reverse engineering existing ontology matching tools or compressing ontology alignment repositories. Moreover, the results obtained from a widely used benchmark dataset provide evidence of the effectiveness of this approach.
