The aim of this study was to validate an instrument which enables the evaluation of talk which maximizes student performance during different segments of interaction-interactivity throughout a complete learning sequence. Based on works developed by the Learning and Research Development Center of the University of Pittsburgh, a scale was developed that gathered the most relevant behaviors of each proposed dimension by researchers from this university center. The scale was used to develop a core subject for a final year Bachelor of Arts degree in Primary Education at a university in Spain and was applied to the 65 students (M = 19, F = 46) taking the subject. The data analysis used an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) that yielded a reliability of α = 0.922. EFA revealed a final interpretable three-factor structure, and the factorial solution comprised 87.86% of total variance. Results show that the talk that students use has three purposes: to constitute an effective group for learning, to build knowledge and to verify its acquisition. The results are discussed in terms of input from the Center for Research in Education and Educational Technologies at the Open University and the Learning Research and Development Center of the University of Pittsburgh.

I come to the subject of this book from a very different path than most of those thinking about the use of computers in educational environments. My formal education focused originally on literature and film studies, and film production at the University of California at Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and the University of California at Los Angeles. I became professionally involved in educational administration through the backdoor of continuing education focused first on the entertainment industry, and then more broadly. It was after this combined experience of studying film and television and working in adult education that I began research in education and earned a doctorate in the field of higher education from Claremont Graduate University, with a special emphasis on distance learning. I hope that the different point of view I have developed from my eclectic background gives me the ability to make something of a unique contribution to this evolving new field. What follows is an attempt to spark a discussion that will lead to answers to the question of what are the most effective techniques for the design of computer learning environments. This is not a how-to book—we are too early in the evolutionary process of the medium to give such specific guidance. Rather, my intention is to offer some theories to elevate the thinking bout computers in education. Because the subject is interdisciplinary, combining science with the humanities, the theoretical discussion draws from abroad range of disciplines: psychology, educational theory, film criticism, and computer science. The book looks at the notion of computer as medium and what such an idea might mean for education. I suggest that the understanding of computers as a medium may be a key to re-envisioning educational technology. Oren (1995) argues that understanding computers as a medium means enlarging human-computer interaction (HCI) research to include issues such as the psychology of media, evolution of genre and form, and the societal implications of media, all of which are discussed here. Computers began to be used in educational environments much later than film, and I would have to agree with others who claim that the use of computers instructionally is still quite unsophisticated.

Objectives: Podcasts have increased in popularity since the early 2000s. The number of medical podcasts created by physicians for patients and/or health care providers is increasing. With the increase in podcasts' popularity and their convenience, podcasts have significant potential for use as an educational tool. Methods: Faculty at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC have created two podcasts, the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) podcast and the Down Syndrome Center (DSC) of Western Pennsylvania Podcast. This paper is a descriptive review of both podcasts. The PHM podcast was created for health care providers who care for hospitalized children. The DSC podcast was started as a source of reliable information for parents of children with Down syndrome. Results: The PHM podcast has over seventeen thousand downloads in over sixty-seven countries. The DSC podcast has over twenty-three thousand downloads in over sixty-nine countries. The PHM podcast has an option for listeners to get CME credit after they listen to the podcast if they click on a link at the University of Pittsburgh website and answer a few questions. Data from responses to these questions demonstrates that 83% of the respondents reported that the podcast either highly or very highly enhanced their knowledge of the subject matter, and 86.8% reported that the content of the podcast was highly or very highly relevant to their work. Conclusion: These results suggest podcasts are a popular and useful tool for disseminating information to families and health care professionals.

Although there may be international differences in some aspects of CPCR course content, we hope material presented will catalyze research in education with CPCR self-training systems. Historically, self-training in CPCR was first introduced to the University of Pittsburgh medical students in 1971 through a pilot program in a CPR learning laboratory. This training was enhanced by the development of a mobile prototype recording manikin (by Laerdall with immediate feedback via lights indicating correct and incorrect actions in breathing and external chest compressions.
