Recent systems applying Machine Learning (ML) to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) exhibit issues when they try to scale up to real case scenarios with several hundred vertices. The use of Candidate Lists (CLs) has been brought up to cope with the issues. A CL is defined as a subset of all the edges linked to a given vertex such that it contains mainly edges that are believed to be found in the optimal tour. The initialization procedure that identifies a CL for each vertex in the TSP aids the solver by restricting the search space during solution creation. It results in a reduction of the computational burden as well, which is highly recommended when solving large TSPs. So far, ML was engaged to create CLs and values on the elements of these CLs by expressing ML preferences at solution insertion. Although promising, these systems do not restrict what the ML learns and does to create solutions, bringing with them some generalization issues. Therefore, motivated by exploratory and statistical studies of the CL behavior in multiple TSP solutions, in this work, we rethink the usage of ML by purposely employing this system just on a task that avoids well-known ML weaknesses, such as training in presence of frequent outliers and the detection of under-represented events. The task is to confirm inclusion in a solution just for edges that are most likely optimal. The CLs of the edge considered for inclusion are employed as an input of the neural network, and the ML is in charge of distinguishing when such edge is in the optimal solution from when it is not. The proposed approach enables a reasonable generalization and unveils an efficient balance between ML and optimization techniques. Our ML-Constructive heuristic is trained on small instances. Then, it is able to produce solutions—without losing quality—for large problems as well. We compare our method against classic constructive heuristics, showing that the new approach performs well for TSPLIB instances up to 1748 cities. Although ML-Constructive exhibits an expensive constant computation time due to training, we proved that the computational complexity in the worst-case scenario—for the solution construction after training—is O(n2logn2), n being the number of vertices in the TSP instance.

The Traveling Salesman Problem is a combinatorial optimization problem, the problem has been shown to belong to the NPC problem, the possible solution of Traveling Salesman Problem and the scale of the cities have the exponential relation, so the more bigger of the scale. In this paper, improve the search process of the genetic algorithm by introducing the idea is to compress the search space. The simulation results show that for solving the TSP, the algorithm can quickly obtain multiple high-quality solutions. It can reduce the blindness of random search and accelerate convergence of the algorithm.

Ant colony optimization techniques are usually guided by pheromone and heuristic cost information when choosing the next element to add to a solution. However, while an individual element may be attractive, usually its long term consequences are neither known nor considered. For instance, a short link in a traveling salesman problem may be incorporated into an ant's solution, yet, as a consequence of this link, the rest of the path may be longer than if another link was chosen. The Accumulated Experience Ant Colony uses the previous experiences of the colony to guide in the choice of elements. This is in addition to the normal pheromone and heuristic costs. Two versions of the algorithm are presented, the original and an improved AEAC that makes greater use of accumulated experience. The results indicate that the original algorithm finds improved solutions on problems with less than 100 cities, while the improved algorithm finds better solutions on larger problems.

Inspired by nature, genetic algorithms (GA) are among the greatest meta-heuristics optimization methods that have proved their effectiveness to conventional NP-hard problems, especially the traveling salesman problem (TSP) which is one of the most studied supply chain management problems. This paper proposes a new crossover operator called Jump Crossover (JMPX) for solving the travelling salesmen problem using a genetic algorithm (GA) for near-optimal solutions, to conclude on its efficiency compared to solutions quality given by other conventional operators to the same problem, namely, Partially matched crossover (PMX), Edge recombination Crossover (ERX) and r-opt heuristic with consideration of computational overload. The authors adopt a low mutation rate to isolate the search space exploration ability of each crossover. The experimental results show that in most cases JMPX can remarkably improve the solution quality of the GA compared to the two existing classic crossover approaches and the r-opt heuristic.

Purpose This paper aims to define the class of fragment constructive heuristics used to compute feasible solutions for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) into edge-greedy and vertex-greedy subclasses. As these subclasses of heuristics can create subtours, two known methodologies for subtour elimination on symmetric instances are reviewed and are expanded to cover asymmetric problem instances. This paper introduces a third novel subtour elimination methodology, the greedy tracker (GT), and compares it to both known methodologies. Design/methodology/approach Computational results for all three subtour elimination methodologies are generated across 17 symmetric instances ranging in size from 29 vertices to 5,934 vertices, as well as 9 asymmetric instances ranging in size from 17 to 443 vertices. Findings The results demonstrate the GT is the fastest method for preventing subtours for instances below 400 vertices. Additionally, a distinction between fragment constructive heuristics and the subtour elimination methodology used to ensure the feasibility of resulting solutions enables the introduction of a new vertex-greedy fragment heuristic called ordered greedy. Originality/value This research has two main contributions: first, it introduces a novel subtour elimination methodology. Second, the research introduces the concept of ordered lists which remaps the TSP into a new space with promising initial computational results.

The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is presumably difficult to solve exactly using local search algorithms. It can be exactly solved by only one algorithm—the enumerative search algorithm. However, the scanning of all possible solutions requires exponential computing time. Do we need exploring all the possibilities to find the optimal solution? How can we narrow down the search space effectively and efficiently for an exhausted search? This chapter attempts to answer these questions. A local search algorithm is a discrete dynamical system, in which a search trajectory searches a part of the solution space and stops at a locally optimal point. A solution attractor of a local search system for the TSP is defined as a subset of the solution space that contains all locally optimal tours. The solution attractor concept gives us great insight into the computational complexity of the TSP. If we know where the solution attractor is located in the solution space, we simply completely search the solution attractor, rather than the entire solution space, to find the globally optimal tour. This chapter describes the solution attractor of local search system for the TSP and then presents a novel search system—the attractor-based search system—that can solve the TSP much efficiently with global optimality guarantee.
