This paper studies how to attain fairness in communication for omniscience that models the multi-terminal compress sensing problem and the coded cooperative data exchange problem where a set of users exchange their observations of a discrete multiple random source to attain omniscience—the state that all users recover the entire source. The optimal rate region containing all source coding rate vectors that achieve omniscience with the minimum sum rate is shown to coincide with the core (the solution set) of a coalitional game. Two game-theoretic fairness solutions are studied: the Shapley value and the egalitarian solution. It is shown that the Shapley value assigns each user the source coding rate measured by their remaining information of the multiple source given the common randomness that is shared by all users, while the egalitarian solution simply distributes the rates as evenly as possible in the core. To avoid the exponentially growing complexity of obtaining the Shapley value, a polynomial-time approximation method is proposed which utilizes the fact that the Shapley value is the mean value over all extreme points in the core. In addition, a steepest descent algorithm is proposed that converges in polynomial time on the fractional egalitarian solution in the core, which can be implemented by network coding schemes. Finally, it is shown that the game can be decomposed into subgames so that both the Shapley value and the egalitarian solution can be obtained within each subgame in a distributed manner with reduced complexity.

We use cooperative game theory to investigate multiplayer allocation problems under the almost diminishing marginal contributions (ADMC) property. This property indicates that a player’s marginal contribution to a non-empty coalition decreases as the size of the coalition increases. We develop ADMC games for such problems and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-emptiness of the core. When the core is non-empty, at least one extreme point exists, and the maximum number of extreme points is the total number of players. The Shapley value may not be in the core, which depends on the gap of each coalition. A player can receive a higher allocation based on the Shapley value in the core than based on the nucleolus, if the gap of the player is no greater than the gap of the complementary coalition. We also investigate the least core value for ADMC games with an empty core. To illustrate the applications of our results, we analyze a code-sharing game, a group buying game, and a scheduling profit game. This paper was accepted by Chung Piaw Teo, optimization.

The paper describes a class of differential games on networks. The construction of cooperative optimality principles using a special type of characteristic function that takes into account the network structure of the game is investigated. The core, the Shapley value and the tau-value are used as cooperative optimality principles. The results are demonstrated on a model of a differential research investment game, where the Shapley value and the tau-value are explicitly constructed.

Some game-theoretic solution concepts such as the Shapley value and the Banzhaf index have recently gained popularity as measures of node centrality in networks. While this direction of research is promising, the computational problems that surround it are challenging and have largely been left open. To date there are only a few positive results in the literature, which show that some game-theoretic extensions of degree-, closeness- and betweenness-centrality measures are computable in polynomial time, i.e., without the need to enumerate the exponential number of all possible coalitions. In this article, we show that these results can be extended to a much larger class of centrality measures that are based on a family of solution concepts known as semivalues. The family of semivalues includes, among others, the Shapley value and the Banzhaf index. To this end, we present a generic framework for defining game-theoretic network centralities and prove that all centrality measures that can be expressed in this framework are computable in polynomial time. Using our framework, we present a number of new and polynomial-time computable game-theoretic centrality measures.

AbstractThis paper formally introduces Hart–Mas-Colell consistency for general (possibly multi-valued) solutions for cooperative games with transferable utility. This notion is used to axiomatically characterize the core on the domain of convex games. Moreover, we characterize all nonempty solutions satisfying individual rationality, anonymity, scale covariance, superadditivity, weak Hart–Mas-Colell consistency, and converse Hart–Mas-Colell consistency. This family consists of (a) the Shapley value, (b) all homothetic images of the core with the Shapley value as center of homothety and with positive ratios of homothety not larger than one, and (c) their relative interiors.

Abstract Irrational-behavior-proof (IBP) conditions are important aspects to keep stable cooperation in dynamic cooperative games. In this paper, we focus on the establishment of IBP conditions. Firstly, the relations of three kinds of IBP conditions are described. An example is given to show that they may not hold, which could lead to the fail of cooperation. Then, based on a kind of limit characteristic function, all these conditions are proved to be true along the cooperative trajectory in a transformed cooperative game. It is surprising that these facts depend only upon the individual rationalities of players for the Shapley value and the group rationalities of players for the core. Finally, an illustrative example is given.

We study the complexity of computing the Shapley value in games with externalities. We focus on two representations based on marginal contribution nets (embedded MC-nets and weighted MC-nets) and five extensions of the Shapley value to games with externalities. Our results show that while weighted MC-nets are more concise than embedded MC-nets, they have slightly worse computational properties when it comes to computing the Shapley value: two out of five extensions can be computed in polynomial time for embedded MC-nets and only one for weighted MC-nets.

We consider the parallel identical machine sequencing situation without initial schedule. For the situation with identical job processing time, we design a cost allocation rule which gives the Shapley value of the related sequencing game in polynomial time. For the game with identical job weight, we also present a polynomial time procedure to compute the Shapley value.

In earlier works, we introduced the Inverse Problem, relative to the Shapley Value, as follows: for a given n-dimensional vector L, find out the transferable utilities’ games , such that  The same problem has been discussed further for Semivalues. A connected problem has been considered more recently: find out TU-games for which the Shapley Value equals L, and this value is coalitional rational, that is belongs to the Core of the game . Then, the same problem was discussed for other two linear values: the Egalitarian Allocation and the Egalitarian Nonseparable Contribution, even though these are not Semivalues. To solve such problems, we tried to find a solution in the family of so called Almost Null Games of the Inverse Set, relative to the Shapley Value, by imposing to games in the family, the coalitional rationality conditions. In the present paper, we use the same idea, but a new tool, an Alternative Representation of Semivalues. To get such a representation, the definition of the Binomial Semivalues due to A. Puente was extended to all Semivalues. Then, we looked for a coalitional rational solution in the Family of Almost Null games of the Inverse Set, relative to the Shapley Value. In each case, such games depend on a unique parameter, so that the coalitional rationality will be expressed by a simple inequality, determined by a number, the coalitional rationality threshold. The relationships between the three numbers corresponding to the above three efficient values have been found. Some numerical examples of the method are given.
