In recent decades, various types of control techniques have been proposed for use in power systems. Among them, the use of a proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller is widely recognized as an effective technique. The generalized type of this controller is the fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller. This type of controller provides a wider range of stability area due to the fractional orders of integrals and derivatives. These types of controllers have been significantly considered as a new approach in power engineering that can enhance the operation and stability of power systems. This paper represents a comprehensive overview of the FOPID controller and its applications in modern power systems for enhancing low-frequency oscillation (LFO) damping. In addition, the performance of this type of controller has been evaluated in a benchmark test system. It can be a driver for the development of FOPID controller applications in modern power systems. Investigation of different pieces of research shows that FOPID controllers, as robust controllers, can play an efficient role in modern power systems.

To damp the inter-area low-frequency oscillation in power systems, a wide-area damping supplementary inter-area controller, based on output prediction observer and LMI method, was designed in this paper. Simulation results of a test system show that the wide-area damping controller can well damp inter-area low-frequency oscillation, and is insensitive to time-delay to some degree.

This paper proposes the use of the linear quadratic regulator, a systematic method in which the controller is obtained by minimizing a quadratic performance index, to ensure the desired damping rates of the low-frequency oscillatory modes present in an electrical power system. The current sensitivity model is used to represent the dynamics of the system. To validate the proposed technique, simulations were carried out using a single machine infinite bus system. From the results obtained, it was evidenced the excellent performance of the proposed controller, since it was able to damp the low-frequency oscillatory mode present in the test system, accrediting it as a powerful tool in the study and analysis of small-signal stability in electric power systems.

The low frequency oscillation in the electrical generator connect to power grid is an important problem to control systems, especially in the gas turbine generators with high speed. The oscillation makes affect to life time, finance of operating and effect of energy process. There are many cause of the oscillation in governor speed control of power plants. They use PSS to do damping low frequency oscillation in recently [11], [12], [13], [14], [22], [23]. So PSS usually does process with delay cycle time, therefore it makes effect isn’t good result. This paper presents a method using linear in the gas turbine generator, which connects to power grid. By observe affect action of local oscillation of the power, study finds key point of oscillation time. From that, we take out decision to do prediction of damping in system and supply signal in to PSS to reduce damaging of this oscillation. Simulation results explain difference action of the system with linear observer and system without linear observer.
