The control of the main environmental factors that influence the quality of perishable products is one of the main challenges of the food industry. Temperature is the main factor affecting quality, but other factors like relative humidity and gas concentrations (mainly C2H4, O2 and CO2) also play an important role in maintaining the postharvest quality of horticultural products. For this reason, monitoring such environmental factors is a key procedure to assure quality throughout shelf life and evaluate losses. Therefore, in order to estimate the quality losses that a perishable product can suffer during storage and transportation, a real-time monitoring system has been developed. This system can be used in all post-harvest steps thanks to its Wi-Fi wireless communication architecture. Several laboratory trials were conducted, using lettuce as a model, to determine quality-rating scales during shelf life under different storage temperature conditions. As a result, a multiple non-linear regression (MNLR) model is proposed relating the temperature and the maximum shelf life. This proposed model would allow to predict the days the commodities will reduce their theoretical shelf-life when an improper temperature during storage or in-transit occurs. The system, developed as a sensor-based tool, has been tested during several land transportation trips around Europe.

Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a highly perishable product and rarely to be kept for more than 7 days. Cold chain system is the only methods apply in Malaysia strawberry industry to prolong the shelf life and preserve the quality of strawberry. UV light treatment proved to be effective in inhibit microbial loads and delay ripening process of fruit products where short wavelength (254 nm) ultraviolet-C was proved in keeping the freshness and quality of fruits or vegetables. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of UV-C irradiation on extending shelf life and to determine the optimum radiation intensity of UV-C treatment on postharvest quality of treated strawberry. A total of 399 of strawberries cv. Festival were harvested in red colour with maturity stage of >80 – 85% from Cameron Highlands’s strawberry farm. The strawberries were exposed to different doses (0, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 kJ/m2) of ultraviolet-C (254nm, UV-C) radiation. The treated strawberries were randomly placed in the polystyrene trays and stored in the dark chilling room at -5Cº for 9 days. The significant differences were found when the highest level of dosage was applied. UV-C treated strawberries with the highest doses (1.0 kJ/mº) are significantly firmer (0.557N), higher total soluble solids content (7.5 ºBrix) and ascorbic acid contain (0.518mg/ml) on day 9 (p

For video real-time monitoring system in different wireless channels, a reliability guarantee technology whose parameters are variable is designed. And this technology improves the video quality of wireless real-time monitoring system greatly. After a detailed introduction of the overall scheme and theory, the design of the reliability guarantee technology is focused on. The size setting of image buffer, the parameters setting of H.264 encode, the frame processing mechanism and the transfer protocol of RTP/RTCP are contained in this design, which guarantee the high reliability of wireless real-time monitoring system. Finally by using the tests in WiFi/WCDMA/TD-LTE channels, the performance indicators are analyzed, and the validity of the design scheme is verified.
