The evolution of communication networks offers new possibilities for development in the automotive industry. Smart vehicles will benefit from the possibility of connecting with the infrastructure and from an extensive exchange of data between them. Furthermore, new control strategies can be developed that benefit the advantages of these communication networks. In this endeavour, the main purposes considered by the automotive industry and researchers from academia are defined by: (i) ensuring people’s safety; (ii) reducing the overall costs, and (iii) improving the traffic by maximising the fluidity. In this paper, a cyber-physical framework (CPF) to control the access of vehicles in roundabout intersections composed of two levels is proposed. Both levels correspond to the cyber part of the CPF, while the physical part is composed of the vehicles crossing the roundabout. The first level, i.e., the edge-computing layer, is based on an analytical solution that uses multivariable optimisation to minimise the waiting times of the vehicles entering a roundabout intersection and to ensure a safe crossing. The second level, i.e., the cloud-computing layer, stores information about the waiting times and trajectories of all the vehicles that cross the roundabout and uses them for long-term analysis and prediction. The simulated results show the efficacy of the proposed method, which can be easily implemented on an embedded device for real-time operation.

Along the German and Luxembourgian part of the Moselle River, eleven distributed local water level and discharge controllers ensure safe navigation by guaranteeing a water level within a specified tolerance and by reducing variations in the river discharge. The current control scheme is based on gain scheduled PI control with a feed forward disturbance compensation element. Both were parametrized using a 1D Saint- Venant model. Due to advancements in control strategies and processing power, the current scheme will be upgraded by adding a model predictive feed forward component (MPFFC) which improves local control and links the isolated local controllers to coordinate their efforts. The authors want to report on this process from an operator’s point of view and share their insights from the ongoing testing procedure prior to actual service. A prototype implementation was deployed on the target hardware and linked to the data acquisition system to verify real time operation. The logged results are then verified using a simulation model.

This paper proposes an action recognition framework for depth map sequences using the 3D Space-Time Auto-Correlation of Gradients (STACOG) algorithm. First, each depth map sequence is split into two sets of sub-sequences of two different frame lengths individually. Second, a number of Depth Motion Maps (DMMs) sequences from every set are generated and are fed into STACOG to find an auto-correlation feature vector. For two distinct sets of sub-sequences, two auto-correlation feature vectors are obtained and applied gradually to L2-regularized Collaborative Representation Classifier (L2-CRC) for computing a pair of sets of residual values. Next, the Logarithmic Opinion Pool (LOGP) rule is used to combine the two different outcomes of L2-CRC and to allocate an action label of the depth map sequence. Finally, our proposed framework is evaluated on three benchmark datasets named MSR-action 3D dataset, DHA dataset, and UTD-MHAD dataset. We compare the experimental results of our proposed framework with state-of-the-art approaches to prove the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The computational efficiency of the framework is also analyzed for all the datasets to check whether it is suitable for real-time operation or not.

Cloud Gaming is a cutting-edge paradigm in the video game provision where the graphics rendering and logic are computed in the cloud. This allows a user’s thin client systems with much more limited capabilities to offer a comparable experience with traditional local and online gaming but using reduced hardware requirements. In contrast, this approach stresses the communication networks between the client and the cloud. In this context, it is necessary to know how to configure the network in order to provide service with the best quality. To that end, the present work defines a novel framework for Cloud Gaming performance evaluation. This system is implemented in a real testbed and evaluates the Cloud Gaming approach for different transport networks (Ethernet, WiFi, and LTE (Long Term Evolution)) and scenarios, automating the acquisition of the gaming metrics. From this, the impact on the overall gaming experience is analyzed identifying the main parameters involved in its performance. Hence, the future lines for Cloud Gaming QoE-based (Quality of Experience) optimization are established, this way being of configuration, a trendy paradigm in the new-generation networks, such as 4G and 5G (Fourth and Fifth Generation of Mobile Networks).

A common way to calculate the glitch activity of a pulsar is an ordinary linear regression of the observed cumulative glitch history. This method however is likely to underestimate the errors on the activity, as it implicitly assumes a (long-term) linear dependence between glitch sizes and waiting times, as well as equal variance, i.e., homoscedasticity, in the fit residuals, both assumptions that are not well justified from pulsar data. In this paper, we review the extrapolation of the glitch activity parameter and explore two alternatives: the relaxation of the homoscedasticity hypothesis in the linear fit and the use of the bootstrap technique. We find a larger uncertainty in the activity with respect to that obtained by ordinary linear regression, especially for those objects in which it can be significantly affected by a single glitch. We discuss how this affects the theoretical upper bound on the moment of inertia associated with the region of a neutron star containing the superfluid reservoir of angular momentum released in a stationary sequence of glitches. We find that this upper bound is less tight if one considers the uncertainty on the activity estimated with the bootstrap method and allows for models in which the superfluid reservoir is entirely in the crust.

AbstractA fire and subsequent explosions occurred in a fireworks warehouse on 13 May 2000. A total of 947 persons were injured and 21 persons died, including four firefighters and one reporter. Communication networks became overloaded and impaired notification chains. The hospital disaster plan was followed, but was proved inadequate. Public information was a high priority. A counselling center was established early and was planned to continue operation for five years. The command function did not perform to expectations. Hospital triage was impaired as many responsible left the triage area. Short-term psychosocial support evolved to long-term programs. Liability issues were examined.
