There are insufficient data for the development of process design criteria for constructed wetlands systems based on submerged plants as a major treatment agent. The aim of the study was to evaluate the oxygen transfer capacity (OTC) of E. densa, in relation to wet plants’ mass (w.m.), and the influence of E. densa on the oxygen concentration and contaminants’ removal efficiency from municipal wastewater. The obtained oxygen concentration and temperature data allowed to calculate the OTC values (mg O2·L−1·h−1), which had been related to wet plants’ mass unit (mg O2·L−1·h−1·g w.m.−1). The efficiency of wastewater treatment was determined in relation to initial wastewater content in the mixture of wastewater and tap water (0%, 25%, 50%, and 100%) during 3 days of the experiment duration. The simulation of day and night conditions was done by artificial lighting. Before and after finishing the second experiment, the COD, Ntotal, and P-PO4 concentration were analyzed in wastewater solutions. The OTC ranged from 3.19 to 8.34 (mgO2·L−1·h−1·g w.m.−1), and the increase of OTC value was related to the increase of wet plant’s mass. The research showed that E. densa affected positively on the wastewater treatment efficiency, and the highest efficiency was achieved in 25% wastewater solution: 43.6% for COD, 52.9% for Ntotal, 14.9% for P-PO4.

Abstract:The constructed wetland is a new kind of wastewater treatment developing in recent years, which is very suitable for the regional characteristics of Shaanxi province. The design of the constructed wetlands is developed from the traditional sub-surface horizontal-flow wetlands (SSHFW). Two groups of wetlands were designed in parallel, and each single wetland can also became the vertical-flow wetland system. Aerating in front of the constructed wetlands is to study the removal efficiency of the organics. Test indicators contain SS、COD、Nitrogen、Phosphor and the rate of nitrification and de-nitrification. According to the experiments of the self-designed SSHFW, the removal efficiency of the SS, COD, NH4+-N、TN and TP were 92%, 82%, 40%, 46.2% and 70% respectively. The strength of nitrification and de-nitrification of the packing reached to 0.35mg/(kg.h) and 3.32mg/(kg.h). On the basis of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation, the adsorption quantity of coarse sand and gravel were 405.2mg/kg and 498.6mg/kg. The quality of the effluent met the primary standard of B-standard in the discharge standards of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant (GB18918-2002).

Three kinds of surplus activated sludge were pretreated by alkali and combination of alkali and ultrasonic. The changes of PO43-P, TP, SCOD, TOC, TS, VS before and after pretreatment were investigated. The results showed that phosphorus and organic matter could be released into supernatant both by alkali and ultrasonic. The surplus activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant was easier to be broken than that from pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant. The activated sludge from Qinghe wastewater treatment plant could be selected for further phosphorus recovery since the largest quantity of phosphorus release and the lowest organic matter release ratio among the three kinds of surplus activated sludge.
