The transverse asymmetry of the index modulation profile in the asymmetric few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG) was investigated. The transverse asymmetry of the index modulation profile will lead to mode conversion between modes with the different azimuthal orders, and this asymmetry is characterized by the attenuation coefficient α. We evaluated that the value of attenuation coefficient α was 0.2 μm−1, and grating amplitude χ was 2.8 × 10−4 for FM-FBG inscribed by UV single-side illumination. We found that the optimized value of α was 0.16 μm−1, at which the maximum mode conversion efficiency of LP01–LP11 can be achieved. The results of this paper provide great potential application in few-mode fiber (FMF) devices and mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical communication.

Breaking Lorentz reciprocity is one necessary condition of optical isolator design. Unidirectional wavelength-mode conversion will be realized in a time-dependent system through a short operating range. Based on plasma dispersion effect, generate space-asymmetric periodical time-space modulation on silicon waveguide, and non-reciprocal propagation is realized in the waveguide. The designed unidirectional wavelength-mode conversion waveguide demonstrated that in the forward direction, input 1.55 [Formula: see text]m fundamental mode light signal and then output 1.5492 [Formula: see text]m is of 1st-order mode, while in the backward direction, input 1.5492 [Formula: see text]m is of 1st-order mode light signal and then output 1.5484 [Formula: see text]m is of fundamental mode. Based on this non-reciprocal structure, mode conversion waveguide and two-ring resonance filters were designed then, to accomplish on-chip optical isolation. The scale of the designed isolator is 160 [Formula: see text]m × 60 [Formula: see text]m, and the isolation is 21 dB, revealing perfect application potential.

The traditional wavelength filter only have one face of grating, the gratings length must be long enough to obtain good filtering result, so the filter device can not be made to a small size. We describe a procedure for rapidly and conveniently prototyping Bragg grating on the three side of the polymer ridge waveguide using holographic interferometry and micro-molding processes. In this experiment, the master of the periodic structure was created on an i-line submicrometer positive photoresist film by a holographic interference using a He-Cd (325nm) laser. A subsequent mold using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer was cast against this master and used as a stamp to transfer the grating pattern onto a UV cure epoxy. The technique shows accurate control for the transferring of a gratings period and depth. It can obtain the filtering result with very short grating length which means that it can be made with a small filtering device.
