Cognitive Radio (CR) has advanced like a brilliant innovation for crossing over the divergence between the accessibility and assignment of the radio recurrence range among various clients. It can change its transmission parameters dependent on the apparent accessibility of the range groups in its working condition. Cognitive radio (CR) innovation vows to be one potential answer for take care of the issue of absence of recurrence range, by permitting access of unlicensed clients in authorized groups, in view of a shrewd methodology and without meddling with the authorized user(PU). Subjective Radio has developed as a savvy innovation in crossing over the divergence between the accessibility and distribution of the radio recurrence range among numerous clients. This paper shows an outline of the spectrum holes in the licensed bands, the concepts of CR, types, spectrum holes, its features and sensing methods the transceiver details and it compares with conventional radio in terms of performance parameters such as interference, operating frequency, security, spectrum utilization, reliability, efficiency and power consumption

A description of the developed software modules for intelligent tuning of operating frequencies for the cognitive radio system is presented. These software modules use the previously proposed algorithm of RF spectrum utilization analysis. Also, software modules have been developed for interacting with software-defined radio such as LimeSDR. Experimental studies have shown that the use of an algorithm for predicting the occupancy of frequency channels allows reducing the time of operational scanning of the spectrum.

Cognitive radio systems have taken a fore-running position in the wireless communication technology. With most of the communication taking place through multi-carrier systems, the allocation of available spectrum to various carriers is a prominent issue. Since cognitive systems provide an environment of dynamic spectrum allocation, it becomes necessary to perform dynamic spectrum allocation swiftly with due consideration of parameters, like power consumption, fair distribution and minimal error. This paper considers a Particle Swarm Optimization-based approach, popularly used for solving large problems involving complex solution spaces to reach an optimal solution within feasible time. The mentioned spectrum allocation problem has been solved using PSO with a view to maximize the total transfer rate of the system, within specified constraints of maximum error rate, maximum power consumption and minimum transfer rate per user. The results have been compared with the existing Genetic Algorithm-based approach and have proved to be more effective.

Cognitive radio is based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. The commercial success of smart radio applications and cognitive radio networks will be very dependent on cost, performance, and power consumption of SDR hardware platforms. SDR hardware is now available, but many issues have yet to be studied. In this chapter, the authors detail the constraints imposed by recent radio protocols and how hardware architectures support them. Then, they present existing architectures and solutions for SDR programming. Finally, the authors mention challenges related to the programming of future cognitive radio systems.

Frequency spectrum is a limited resource and the increasing demand caused by emerging services, augmented number of wireless users along with the demand for high-quality multimedia applications have resulted in the overcrowding of the allocated spectrum bands. The overcrowding of spectrum bands has exacerbated by the current spectrum licensing policy which has emerged as a bottleneck to efficient spectrum utilization, due to its inflexibility, resulting in most of the licensed spectrum being severely under-utilized. However, the problem of scarcity of spectrum bands and the inefficient utilization of the already allocated radio spectrum can be smartly addressed through spectrum sharing by enabling opportunistic usage of the underutilized frequency bands. One of the most exciting ways of spectrum sharing is cognitive radio technology which allows a wireless node to sense the environment, detect the network changes, and then make intelligent decisions by dynamically changing its reception or transmission parameters to communicate while ensuring that no interference is affected to the licensed users. It thus improves the spectrum utilization by reusing the unused or underutilized spectrum owned by the incumbent systems (primary systems). In this paper, a comprehensive survey and review of recent research about the advances in cognitive radio technology will be carried out. We will also evaluate the various spectrum sensing techniques in a cognitive radio network in the UHF/VHF bands allocated for TV broadcasting.
