automated Production Systems (aPS) are highly complex, mechatronic systems that usually have to operate reliably for many decades. Standardization and reuse of control software modules is a core prerequisite to achieve the required system quality in increasingly shorter development cycles. However, industrial case studies in aPS show that many aPS companies still struggle with strategically reusing software. This paper proposes a metric-based approach to objectively measure the m aturity of i ndustrial IEC 61131-based co ntrol s oftwar e in aPS (MICOSE4aPS) to identify potential weaknesses and quality issues hampering systematic reuse. Module developers in the machine and plant manufacturing industry can directly benefit as the metric calculation is integrated into the software engineering workflow. An in-depth industrial evaluation in a top-ranked machine manufacturing company in food packaging and an expert evaluation with different companies confirmed the benefit of efficiently managing the quality of control software.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) based software defect prediction (SDP) techniques in the software development process helps isolate defective software modules, count the number of software defects, and identify risky code changes. However, software development teams are unaware of SDP and do not have easy access to relevant models and techniques. The major reason for this problem seems to be the fragmentation of SDP research and SDP practice. To unify SDP research and practice this article introduces a cloud-based, global, unified AI framework for SDP called DePaaS—Defects Prediction as a Service. The article describes the usage context, use cases and detailed architecture of DePaaS and presents the first response of the industry practitioners to DePaaS. In a first of its kind survey, the article captures practitioner’s belief into SDP and ability of DePaaS to solve some of the known challenges of the field of software defect prediction. This article also provides a novel process for SDP, detailed description of the structure and behaviour of DePaaS architecture components, six best SDP models offered by DePaaS, a description of algorithms that recommend SDP models, feature sets and tunable parameters, and a rich set of challenges to build, use and sustain DePaaS. With the contributions of this article, SDP research and practice could be unified enabling building and using more pragmatic defect prediction models leading to increase in the efficiency of software testing.

The construction of an effective intelligent information transmission system in a group of cyber-physical systems is one of the important problems in both practical and theoretical contexts. Such a system for transmitting information for a group is being built for a network consisting of separate robotic complexes. Increasingly, decentralized solutions are used to build effective interaction between group members. As a rule, in networks, decentralization is present in computing software modules, and the data transmission system between nodes is centralized. One of the aspects of such centralization is the need to send data to a specific destination directly or by relaying through other nodes - routing data in the network. In this work, a method of data transmission in a decentralized network between robotic complexes without reference to routing is proposed. The method consists of the exchange of data on the state of the entire network as a whole between the nodes.

A building automation system is a centralized intelligent system, which controls the operation of energy, security, water, and safety by the help of hardware and software modules. The general software modules employed for automation process have an algorithm with pre-determined decisions. However, such pre-determined decision algorithms won’t work in a proper manner at all situations like a human brain. Therefore a human biological inspired algorithms are developed in recent days and termed as neural network algorithms. The Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) is a kind of artificial neural network algorithm which has the ability to take decisions same as like of human brains in an efficient way. Hence a building automation system is proposed in the work based on PNN for verifying the effectiveness of neural network algorithms over the traditional pre-determined decision making algorithms. The experimental work is further extended to verify the performances of the basic neural network algorithm called Convolution Neural Network (CNN).
