The results of the long-term monitoring of coastal waters off the Heracles Peninsula (Crimea, the Black Sea) are presented. The abiotic and biotic parameters, indicating the ecological condition of the coastal zone, have been studied. The following parameters have been measured by standard methods: water temperature, illuminance, concentration of particulate matter, organic matter, primary production, intensity of biotic reproduction of particulate matter, phytoplankton and meroplankton species diversity, abundance, and biomass, as well as shell morphometrics and sex ratio in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. It has been found that upwelling water circulation is typical for the coastal waters off the Heracles Peninsula. The mean annual sea surface temperature over the study period 2000-2016 proved to be 2.7°С higher than that in the early 20th century. The maximum values of phytoplankton primary production are associated with inner waters of coves and with increased Twater and Еmax values. A reduction in phytoplankton and meroplankton diversity and a dominance of eurybiontic species have been recorded from the waters subject to anthropogenic impacts. The most pronounced shift of sex ratio toward predominance of M. galloprovincialis males and a high mussel Н/L shell index are observed in waters with increased technogenic load. The taxonomic structure of phytoplankton and meroplankton, sex ratio, and morphometric parameters of bivalves are the sensitive tools of ecological monitoring to assess the condition of the surrounding aquatic environment.

In the autumn-spring periods 2018 - 2020. biotesting of water and bottom sediments of the lower Dniester and Ukrainian coastal waters of the Dniester region of the Black Sea was carried out by biotesting on a laboratory culture of planktonic algae Desmodesmus communis. The assessment of the ecological and toxicological situation and a comparative analysis of indicators of the level of pollution of the ecosystem of the “lower reaches of the Dniester” testify to the chronic pollution of this ecosystem by dangerous toxicants, acute toxicity occurs only during peak periods, while chronic toxicity is constantly manifested. It was found that in the overwhelming majority of water areas with different nature of anthropogenic factors and anthropogenic load, there were no toxic substances. Hazardous pollutants were more often found in the surface water layer of the zones affected by urban wastewaters on the Ukrainian coast of the Dniester region of the Black Sea.

Seasonal variability of phytoplankton biomass, “pure” primary production and its share consumed micro¬zooplankton, as well as the specific microzooplankton grazing rate of phytoplankton for the surface layer (0-1 m) in coastal waters of the Black Sea was studied. Almost 80% of the total annual primary’ produc¬tion of phytoplankton is created by phytoplankton with the average cell volume .from 150 to 4000 mm3. The main share of annual primary production, eaten by microzooplankton (86%) is also associated with these algae sized groups.

Introduction. Using bioindication methods, the authors assessed the environmental state of water at the place where the Hadzhiyska River flows into the Black Sea (Slanchev Bryag / Sunny Beach resort, Bulgaria). Methods. The studies were carried out in the summer seasons of 2017–2019 during sea water “blooming”. The quality of river water was assessed by the state of the community of zoobenthic organisms using the Trent biotic index originally developed by Woodiwiss and the Mayer index, and the state of the coastal marine ecosystem was assessed by the species composition of the Black Sea macroalgae. Results. The waters at the mouth of the Hadzhiyska River can be classified as “polluted” and represent the main local source of biogenic elements entering the coastal sea waters. In the marine macrophytobenthos, representatives of green, brown and red algae were identified, including two species listed in the Red Book of the Black Sea — Cystoseira barbata and Zostera marina. The authors noted a displacement of native species — representatives of Cystoseira and Zostera genera — due to an increase in the number of associated algae from Ceramium, Cladophora and Ulva genera, which confirms organic pollution and eutrophication in coastal waters. The taxonomic structure of the macrophytes allows for the conclusion that the environmental state of the marine ecosystem in the area is satisfactory. The authors also provide a rationale for the use of benthic organisms in the express diagnostics of water environment quality in resort areas.

Atmospheric precipitations can be an important source of nutrients to open and coastal zones of marine ecosystem. Jickells [1] has published that atmospheric depositions can sup-port 5-25% of nitrogen required to primary production. Bulk atmospheric precipitations have been collected in a rural location at the Black Sea Crimean coast – Katsiveli settlement, and an urban location – Sevastopol city. Samples have been analyzed for inorganic fixed nitrogen (IFN) – nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium. Deposi-tions have been calculated at various space and time scales. The monthly volume weighted mean concentration of IFN increases from summer to winter in both locations. A significant local source of IFN has been revealed for the urban location and this source and its spatial influence have been quantified. IFN deposition with atmospheric precipitations is up to 5% of its background content in the upper 10 m layer of water at the north-western shelf of the Black Sea. Considering Redfield C:N ratio (106:16) and the rate of primary production (PP) in coastal areas of the Black Sea of about 100-130 g C m-2 year-1 we have assessed that average atmospheric IFN depositions may intensify primary production by 4.5% for rural locations, but this value is increased many-fold in urban locations due to local IFN sources.

Long-term (20032014) routine observations of zooplankton in Sevastopol Bay (the Black Sea) have allowed the naturalization of the invasive copepod Oithona davisae to be studied in the Black Sea coastal waters. Inter-annual and seasonal variability of the species and their impact on the native copepod community have been analyzed. The invasion of O. davisae and their undoubted dominance in terms of abundance were shown to alter the community structure but, at the same time, the abundances of the native species did not decrease, excepting the Black Sea earlier invader Acartia tonsa. A significant decline in A. tonsa numbers over the stages of O. davisae establishment and naturalization provided evidence of competition between the species. O. davisae have been demonstrated to gain competitive advantage over A. tonsa, that ensured their fast dispersal in the Black Sea, acclimatization in the new habitat and the successful competition over native species.
