Food habits and diet composition of Patagonian flounder Paralichthys patagonicus (Jordan, 1889) were studied on the basis of stomach content analyses from 828 specimens (512 females, 304 males, 12 unsexed) collected during 16 commercial cruises between February 2009 and April 2010 in the Argentine-Uruguayan Coastal Ecosystem (34° S-41° S). A total of 272 stomachs (32.9%) contained food (184 females and 84 males), among which 20 prey taxa were identified. The most important prey category was pelagic fish, primarily Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita), followed by rough scad (Trachurus lathami). Evidence showed that females consumed a higher total wet weight of prey compared to males. Results also suggested a specialised diet over E. anchoita, across all sex and size groups. The estimated trophic level for the population of P. patagonicus was 4.16. This study suggests that P. patagonicus is a tertiary piscivorous consumer of the trophic food web in the region, and reveals changes in the prey consumption compared with previous studies.

The fishing activity with purse seines in the Aegean Sea accounts for almost half of the pelagic fish excluding anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus Linnaeus, 1758) in Turkey. In this study, we aimed to analyse the catch amounts of some important pelagic species caught by Aegean purse seiners between 1973 and 2019. While mid-1990s are the most captured years for the European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792) in Aegean Sea and also Turkish Seas, this amount has decreased at the level of 10000 mt in the mid-2000s and remained similar amounts up to now. Though European pilchard was the most caught species in the Aegean until 2011, this has changed in favour of anchovy in the last decade. Recently, almost all pelagic species such as mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758), chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus Houttuyn, 1782) and bogue (Boops boops Linnaeus, 1758) have been caught from the Aegean Sea in Turkey. In the study, the production of these species in the historical period was tried to be associated with the regulations implemented with circulars and notifications, and the problems preventing the sustainable use of these species that were caught by purse seiners were determined and solutions were proposed for the future.

Abstract Fishery production in Indonesia is still relatively high, dominated by the marine capture fisheries. Oceanographic dynamics can affect the high and low levels of marine fishery production. Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a are oceanographic parameters that are often used as indicators for determining fishing areas, especially pelagic fish which are associated with ocean fertility. This study aims to identify the effect of chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature (SST) on the production of fish catches in Indonesia: 2018. Data on marine capture fisheries production (skipjack, mackerel tuna, tuna and shrimp) in 2018 were obtained from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). Data of Chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature (SST) are satellite observations from Marine Copernicus. The relationship between chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature (SST) with marine capture fisheries production was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The results showed that chlorophyll-a significantly affected the yield of skipjack and tuna in Indonesia with coefficients of -5.7066 and -4.3760, respectively. A higher concentration of chlorophyll-a had the possibility to produce high fish production of 0.0033 times than an area with a lower concentration of chlorophyll-a.

Abstract The present study uses the Community Earth System Model, version 1– Biogeochemistry [CESM1(BGC)] to examine the influence of climate variability and climate change on small pelagic fish biomass in the Indonesian seas. The fish biomass was calculated based on a fish production model according to primary production and energy transfer at the tropic level. The primary production data were obtained from results of CESM1(BGC) model from 1850 to 2015. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the calculated fish biomass identifies three regions in the Indonesian seas that are associated with coastal upwelling. These regions are located in (1) southern coast of Central Java Province until west-coast of West Sumatra Province, (2) southern coast of Central Java Province until the southern coast of Bali Province, and (3) Banda-Arafura Seas. Fish production variability in these regions exhibits semi-annual, annual, and IOD-ENSO related signals. Climate change impact for RCP 4.5 scenario produces ‘fish stock increase status’ in 2025 for the three regions, while the ‘fish stock current status’ will reoccur in 2050, except for the western part of Sumatra (part of region-1) which alters to ‘fish stock decrease status’.
