Abstract We report on Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) high-precision photometry of the iconic non-eclipsing 5.60 days (O9.7Iab+black hole) binary Cygnus X-1. Previous ground-based photometry reveals low-amplitude (∼0.04 mag) ellipsoidal light-variations that arise from the tidal (and rotational) distortion of the O9.7Iab companion. Additional small light-variations have also been reported by many observers. Short-cadence TESS photometry was conducted over ∼27 days during 2019 July–August. The photometry shows the expected ∼5.60 days binary ellipsoidal variations, but in addition ∼0.01–0.03 mag complex quasi-periodic brightness variations. The observations were analyzed to investigate the underlying extra-binary variability. We also determined a new time of minimum light and calculated an updated period and light elements. The quasi-periodic, (non-binary) light-variations likely arise from the complex pulsations of the blue supergiant.

Context. The well established negative correlation between the αOX spectral slope and the optical/ultraviolet (UV) luminosity, a by-product of the relation between X-rays and optical/UV luminosity, is affected by relatively large dispersion. The main contributors to this dispersion can be variability in the X-ray/UV ratio and/or changes in fundamental physical parameters. Aims. We want to quantify the contribution from variability within single sources (intra-source dispersion) and that from variations of other quantities different from source to source (inter-source dispersion). Methods. We use archival data from the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalog (XMMSSC) and from the XMM-OM Serendipitous Ultraviolet Source Survey (XMMOM-SUSS3). We select a sub-sample in order to decrease the dispersion of the relation due to the presence of radio-loud and broad absorption line objects, and that due to absorptions in both X-ray and optical/UV bands. We use the structure function (SF) to estimate the contribution from variability to the dispersion. We analyse the dependence of the residuals of the relation on various physical parameters in order to characterise the inter-source dispersion. Results. We find a total dispersion of σ ∼ 0.12 and find that intrinsic variability contributes 56% of the variance of the αOX − LUV relation. If we select only sources with a larger number of observational epochs (≥3) the dispersion of the relation decreases by approximately 15%. We find weak but significant dependencies of the residuals of the relation on black-hole mass and on Eddington ratio, which are also confirmed by a multivariate regression analysis of αOX as a function of UV luminosity and black-hole mass and/or Eddington ratio. We find a weak positive correlation of both the αOX index and the residuals of the αOX − LUV relation with inclination indicators, such as the full width at half maximum (Hβ) and the equivalent width (EW)[OIII], suggesting a weak increase of X-ray/UV ratio with the viewing angle. This suggests the development of new viewing angle indicators possibly applicable at higher redshifts. Moreover, our results suggest the possibility of selecting a sample of objects, based on their viewing angle and/or black-hole mass and Eddington ratio, for which the αOX − LUV relation is as tight as possible, in light of the use of the optical/UV – X-ray luminosity relation to build a distance modulus (DM)-z plane and estimate cosmological parameters.

We have determined abundances in the secondary stars of the black hole X-ray binary A0620-00 and the neutron star Binary Cen X-4. These are K type stars veiled by the emission produced by the respective accretion discs. We searched for evidence of nucleosynthetic products from the progenitor of the compact object that could have contaminated the secondary stars (as in Israelian et al., 1999).Using high resolution spectra obtained with VLT/UVES, we have derived in a consistent way stellar parameters and the veiling caused by the accretion disc.

AbstractOptical transient surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) by massive black hole in the centers of galaxies. Despite extensive searches, X-ray follow-up observations have produced no or only weak X-ray detections in most of them. Here we report the discovery of delayed X-ray brightening around 140 days after the optical outburst in the TDE OGLE16aaa, followed by several flux dips during the decay phase. These properties are unusual for standard TDEs and could be explained by the presence of supermassive black hole binary or patchy obscuration. In either scenario, the X-rays can be produced promptly after the disruption but are blocked in the early phase, possibly by a radiation-dominated ejecta which leads to the bulk of optical and ultraviolet emission. Our findings imply that the reprocessing is important in the TDE early evolution, and X-ray observations are promising in revealing supermassive black hole binaries.
