This study presents a probabilistic methodology for estimation of the remaining life of pressurized pipelines containing active corrosion defects. A reliability assessment was carried out using extreme value distribution of the corroded defects instead of the already published failure pressure model like NG18 or ASME B31G. The failure probability of pipelines depends on the number of corroded defects, and it was calculated directly as the area exceeded a defined LV(Limited Value of corrosion depth). The remaining life of pressurized pipelines can also be estimated by the PDF of extreme value distribution as calculating the exceeded area with a defined failure probability.

Numerical model of a corroded weld joint connecting pipe to flange using a finite element method was developed, and coupled with usual stress models. The structure material has been characterized experimentally. Monte Carlo simulations, FORM and SORM methods have been applied for estimating reliability and failure probability under corrosion and residual stress effects. A numerical case with various corrosion rates was conducted to determine the reliability of the welded connection pipe to flange. The obtained results show that the heat affected zone is very sensitive to corrosion effects due to the welding process.

AbstractThe Materials Characterization Center (MCC) at Pacific Northwest Lab- oratory is performing three kinds of corrosion tests for the Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) to establish the interlaboratory reproducibility and uncertainty of corrosion rates of container materials for high-level nuclear waste. The three types of corrosion tests were selected to address two distinct conditions that are expected in a repository constructed in basalt. An air/steam test is designed to address corrosion during the operational period and static pressure vessel and flowby tests are designed to address corrosion under conditions that bound the condi ring the post-closure period of the repository. The results of tests at reference testing conditions, which were defined to facilitate interlaboratory comparison of data, are presented. Data are reported for the BWIP/MCC-105.5 Air/Steam Test, BWIP/MCC-105.1 Static Pressure Vessel, and BWIP/MC-105.4 Flowby Test. In those cases where data are available from a second laboratory, a statistical analysis of interlaboratory results is reported and expected confidence intervals for mean corrosion rates are given. Other statistical treatment of data include analyses of the effects of vessel-to-vessel variations, test capsule variations for the flowby test, and oven-to-oven variations for air/steam tests.

Subject. The article considers ratings of banks' reliability. Objectives. The aim is to evaluate the accuracy of existing methodology for bank reliability assessment based on official reporting, to identify patterns between indicators and factors that can affect the financial sustainability of a bank. Methods. The study draws on the comparative analysis of key indicators of bank's financial statements one year prior to the introduction of provisional administration, and evaluates the results of existing methods for analyzing the financial standing of banks. Results. The findings show that those methods that use only official reporting to assess the reliability of banks are not sufficient for short-term forecasting of financial stability. Ratings of the majority of agencies that rest on official reporting have a high percentage of erroneous results, therefore, rating agencies are not able to predict the regulator's decisions regarding a credit institution. Conclusions. Currently, there are no universal methods to determine reliability, which would provide a correct forecast of deteriorated financial position of the bank. It is important to use a systems approach, where financial reporting is not a key component.
