Abstract This paper describes a methodology for simulating the virtual assembly of heavy machinery. Heavy machinery or parts are described in this paper as objects too heavy to safely lift with two hands. Virtual assembly of heavy machinery poses special problems that are not seen in assemblies composed of parts easily manipulated with human hands. This paper identifies some of the difficulties associated with real-time virtual assembly of heavy machinery, and proposes methods for addressing these problems. We describe a method for reorganizing the assembly tree outside of traditional CAD systems to better simulate assemblies with numerous parts. This allows the user to control the assembly sequences, which are simulated in the virtual environment without changing the assembly hierarchy of the original CAD model. This paper also proposes methods for simulation of overhead cranes and the physical modeling of crane-part interactions, providing real-time virtual manipulation of heavy objects.

A CAD model cannot be reused efficiently because of its incomplete design information. To solve this problem, a CAD model reuse method based on the IDH (Integrate Design History) is presented. IDH is defined as full record of modeling process and related knowledge, an extended CAD model is built as the carrier of the IDH. Based on the extended CAD model, a model reuse method is proposed by taking advantage of product design guide technology. Finally, a prototype system is developed and verifies the efficiency and feasibility of this method.

In this paper, three-dimensional automatic fuel measuring device of diesel engine test bed was created. The function of virtual assembly was achieved using virtual reality modeling language. Network virtual assembly can operate, browse and assemble automatic fuel measuring device remotely by embedding virtual assembly in web pages. The virtual assembly method presented in this paper can be easily extended to deal with many other problems in engineering system if control parameters are modified properly.

In order to find an optimum assembly sequence in engineering design domain, a knowledge-based virtual assembly approach was put forward. Virtual assembly design environment was also introduced, and knowledge representation models for virtual assembly rules and cases are introduced and studied respectively. A side-center virtual assembly method was applied to avoid the occurrence of assembly interference. Finally, a case was employed to demonstrate the practicality of knowledge-based virtual assembly planning.

Computer Aided Assembly Process Planning is a method of automatically generating assembly process files with computer. This paper describes an integrated assembly process files generation system for virtual assembly. The objectives of this study are to integrate assembly planning of a product with its CAD model, generate a correct and practical assembly sequence and establish a software system to generate the assembly process files. The method of generating assembly process charts for virtual assmbly is researched. The system framework of generating assembly process charts is been set up. The assembly model information that needed for the assembly process charts generation is analyzed. The expression method of assembly sequence and arithmetic of generating assembly process charts is put forward. A speed reducer is used as an example to check the system.

Virtual assembly was introduced in the chemical process simulation, and the method of virtual assembly for common chemical process was studied. The process of biomass fuel ethanol was analyzed which is combined by the first-grade distillation system in industrial ethanol production and the salt-added extractive distillation system in fuel ethanol production, and the scene graph structure was established. According to the assembly characteristics of the chemical process, the assembly equipment model was designed and constructed. The assembly points were added, and the assembly, simulation and transitive properties of the assembly points were defined. The 1+1and 1+n universality assembly method was proposed. By choosing unit equipment freely to assembly, the complex distillation system was realized. Results have shown that the assembly effect was good and accuracy, the method was proved correct and feasible. It is of great significance in the visual design of chemical process, digital construction of chemical plant and development of three-dimensional (3D) chemical process simulation technology.
