A mechanical product is the result of collaboration between different domains. In this paper we focus on the collaborative work that brings together the system engineer and the designer in the realization process of a mechanical system. A design solution, conceived in the CAD environment, is considered valid if all the specification requirements, defined in the MBSE (Model Based System Engineering) domain, are met. Thus, the preliminary study of these requirements has a major influence on the choice and validation of the design solution. In this paper a methodology for handling the requirements has been detailed. These requirements are classified into two main categories. The first one deals with the product performance and the second addresses the process performance in order to generate the best assembly sequence. Depending on the response of the designed solution to these requirements, it becomes easy to decide not only whether the design solution can be validated or not but also to choose the most optimal assembly sequence that ensures the best operation quality. A validation example of a speed reducer is used to demonstrate the added value of the proposed approach.

Background: With the rapid development of spatial technology and mankind's continuous exploration of the space domain, expandable space trusses play an important role in the construction of space station piggyback platforms. Therefore, the study of the in-orbit assembly strategy for space trusses has become increasingly important in recent years. The spatial truss assembly strategy proposed in this paper is fast and effective, and it is applied for the construction of future large-scale space facilities effectively. Objective: The four-prismatic truss periodic module is taken as the research object, and the assembly process of the truss and the assembly behaviors of the spatial cellular robot serving for on-orbit assembly are expressed. Methods: The article uses a reinforcement learning algorithm to study the coupling of truss assembly sequence and robot action sequence, then uses a q-learning algorithm to plan the strategy of the truss cycle module. Results: The robot is trained through the greedy strategy and avoids the failure problem caused by assembly uncertainty. The simulation experiment proves that the Q-learning algorithm of reinforcement learning used for planning the on-orbit assembly sequence of the truss periodic module structures is feasible, and the optimal assembly sequence with the least number of assembly steps obtained by this strategy. Conclusion: In order to address the on-orbit assembly issues of large spatial truss structures in the space environment, we trained the robots through greedy strategy to prevent failure due to the uncertainty conditions both in the strategy analysis and in the simulation study.Finally, the Q-learning algorithm in reinforcement learning is used to plan the on-orbit assembly sequence in the truss cycle module, which can obtain the optimal assembly sequence in the minimum number of assembly steps.

The proposed model of the neural network describes the task of planning the assembly sequence on the basis of predicting the optimal assembly time of mechanical parts. In the proposed neural approach, the k-means clustering algorithm is used. In order to find the most effective network, 10,000 network models were made using various training methods, including the steepest descent method, the conjugate gradients method, and Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno algorithm. Changes to network parameters also included the following activation functions: linear, logistic, tanh, exponential, and sine. The simulation results suggest that the neural predictor would be used as a predictor for the assembly sequence planning system. This paper discusses a new modeling scheme known as artificial neural networks, taking into account selected criteria for the evaluation of assembly sequences based on data that can be automatically downloaded from CAx systems.

AbstractJoints design is an essential step in the process of designing timber structures. Complex architectural topologies require thorough planning and scheduling, as it is necessary to consider numerous factors such as structural stability, fabrication capabilities, and ease of assembly. This paper introduces a novel approach to timber joints design that embed both fabrication and assembly considerations within the same model to avoid mistakes that might cause delays and further expenses. We developed a workflow that allows us to identify the fundamental data to describe a given joint geometry, machine-independent fabrication procedures, and the assembly sequence. Based on this, we introduce a comprehensive descriptive language called Joint Descriptive Model (JDM) that leverages industry standards to convert a joint into a usable output for both fabrication and assembly simulations. Finally, we suggest a seed of a joint’s library with some common joints.

Purpose During the design of a new product, the generation of assembly sequences plans (ASPs) has become one of the most important problems taken into account by researchers. In fact, a good mounting order allows the time decrease of the assembly process which leads to the reduction of production costs. In this context, researchers developed several methods to generate and optimize ASP based on various criteria. Although this paper aims to improve the quality of ASP it is necessary to increase the number of criteria which must be taken into account when generating ASPs. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, an ASP generation approach, which is based on three main algorithms, is proposed. The first one generates a set of assembly sequences based on stability criteria. The obtained results are treated by the second algorithm which is based on assembly tools (ATs) workspace criterion. An illustrative example is used to explain the different steps of this proposed approach. Moreover, a comparative study is done to highlight its advantages. Findings The proposed algorithm verifies, for each assembly sequence, the minimal required workspace of used AT and eliminates the ASPs non-respecting this criterion. Finally, the remaining assembly sequences are treated by the third algorithm to reduce the AT change during the mounting operation. Originality/value The proposed approach introduces the concept of AT workspace to simulate and select ASPs that respect this criterion. The dynamic interference process allows the eventual collision detection between tool and component and avoids it. The proposed approach reduces the AT change during the mounting operations.
