The purpose of this study is the numerical simulation and control optimization of a wave energy converter to estimate the power at a test site in the Izu Islands. In Japan, ocean energy is once again being seriously considered; however, since there are many inherent problems due to severe conditions such as the strong swells and large waves, estimations are important when designing such devices. The numerical simulation method in this study combines the wave interaction analysis software WAMIT and an in-house time-domain simulation code using the Newmark-β method, and introduces approximate complex-conjugate control into the code. The optimized parameters were assessed for a regular sine wave and an irregular wave with a typical wave spectrum. With the optimized parameters, average and maximum output power were estimated for the observed wave data at the test site. The results show a more than 100 kW average power output and a several times larger maximum power output.

A poorly known deep-water axiid shrimp, Eiconaxius acutifrons Bate, 1888, the type species of the genus, is redescribedon the basis of the two type specimens (lectotype and paralectotype, designated herein) from the Banda Sea, Indonesia,and three recently collected specimens from the Myojin Knoll, Izu Islands, Japan. Diagnostic characters of this speciesare reassessed, and the comparison with closely allied congeneric species is made. Previous records referred to E.acutifrons are reviewed. It has been confirmed that none of the subsequent records under the name represent the true E.acutifrons. We found that Eiconaxius albatrossae Kensley, 1996 and E. faxoni Sakai, 2011 were based on the same seriesof material from the eastern Pacific, referred to E. acutifrons by Faxon (1895), but the Sakai’s (2011) taxon name is unavailable because of the lack of an explicit type fixation.

Two genera of Euconnus-like Stenichnini are reported to occur in Japan: Himaloconnus Franz, 1979 and Nogunius gen. n. Specimens of Himaloconnus collected on islands of the Ryukyu archipelago are identified as H. klapperichianus (Franz), previously known to inhabit Taiwan, but morphological differences were found among disjunctive populations and in consequence three new subspecies are proposed: H. klapperichianus yaeyamanus ssp. n. (Yaeyama Islands), H. klapperichianus amamianus ssp. n. (Amami-Ôshima), and H. klapperichianus okinawanus ssp. n. (Okinawa Island). Morphological structures of Japanese Himaloconnus are illustrated in detail and the diagnosis of this genus is emended, to exclude variable characters. Nogunius gen. n. is established to accommodate four species known only from Japan: N. sokani sp. n. (Okinawa Island), N. aogashimanus sp. n. (Aogashima, Izu Islands), N. kerri sp. n. (Ishigaki Island), and N. fukuuzanus sp. n. (Okinawa Island). Identification key to Japanese genera of Stenichnini is updated.

A new species of Sciaphila (Triuridaceae), S. kozushimensis Suetsugu, is described from Kozu Island, Izu Islands, Japan. The new species is similar to S. tosaensis in having unisexual flowers (the female towards the base of the rachis), perianth-segments without any appendages and club-shaped style that is as long as or slightly exceeds ovary in the flowering stage. However, it is distinguishable by smaller male flowers, wide and acuminate male perianth segments and somewhat dissimilar perianth segments. An illustration and molecular analysis based on ITS sequences of the new species are provided. A key to the Japanese Sciaphila is also provided for identification of these rare mycoheterotrophic plants.

The identity of the pilumnid crab, Pilumnus dofleini Balss, 1933, is reassessed based on the female holotype and additional male specimens from Sagami Bay and the Sea of Japan, Japan. Three new species allied to P. dofleini are described and illustrated: P. curvipenis n. sp. from the Izu Islands, Japan; and P. armatus n. sp. and P. bohol n. sp. from the Bohol Sea, the Philippines. These four species are diagnosed, compared and differentiated from the related P. acanthosoma Ng, 2000.

Abstract. There have been many reports on ULF electromagnetic phenomena associated with the 2000 Izu Islands earthquake swarm. In this study, seismo-magnetic anomalies are presented by examining energy variations of signatures at the periods around 100 s. Geomagnetic data observed at three stations in Izu Peninsula from 1 January 2000 to 30 April 2001 have been analyzed and wavelet transform has been performed. In order to indentify anomalous changes from ionosphere disturbances, Kakioka station has been chosen as a reference station, and the similar data analysis has been performed. The results suggest that the unusual energy enhancement of the Z component, which only appears in Izu Peninsula from late June until early November 2000, might possibly be one of electromagnetic phenomena associated with the 2000 Izu Islands earthquake swarm.
