Towards an Improved Hotel Reservation System

This chapter presents a tool that distinguishes selects and supplies, among all products with similar characteristics that appear in the catalogue of a company, the product that better adapts to the necessities of the users. In order to achieve this, it uses a search system based on fuzzy logic techniques, being able to handle vague information or of difficult specification and thus making possible to administer to the tool by means of rules of “common sense,” which talk about indefinite amounts. A fundamental aspect that provides great flexibility to the application is that the system can be modified and adjusted by the expert in real time. This allows changing quickly the output product set and without stopping the operation of the system based on the necessities of the company. The results are codified in XML format, facilitating the interoperability between systems and allowing the execution of the tool in multiple operative systems, as they only have to process the generated content. The possibility of displaying the clients the products that they are looking for, directly responding to their necessities, guiding and advising them in the purchase that are ready to make, is a competitive advantage that the company must not let escape.

Order picking is an activity in a warehouse, carried out by a team, where customer orders are prepared. It is also the activity with the highest logistic costs in a company. In this chapter, a proposal is presented aimed at improving the order picking process in a warehouse. Order picking continues to attract the attention of people in charge of optimizing processes in a company for minimizing costs. There are several approaches to order picking such as discrete picking, batch picking, and zone picking. The purpose of this study is mainly oriented toward the reduction of batch picking times to achieve an improvement in the service. In this chapter is proposed the application of compensatory fuzzy logic (CFL), which is a branch of classical logic and is also discussed the possibility of making real-time order batches (dynamic batching) by using compensatory fuzzy rules for the classification of incoming orders.

The Tactile Internet will require ultra-low latencies for combining machines and humans in systems where humans are in the control loop. Real-time and perceptual coding in these systems commonly require content-specific approaches. We present a generic approach based on deliberately reduced number accuracy and evaluate the trade-off between savings achieved and errors introduced with real-world data for kinesthetic movement and tele-surgery. Our combination of bitplane-level accuracy adaptability with perceptual threshold-based limits allows for great flexibility in broad application scenarios. Combining the attainable savings with the relatively small introduced errors enables the optimal selection of a working point for the method in actual implementations.
