Service-Oriented Reference Architecture for Digital Library Systems

Developing and maintaining Digital Libraries requires substantial investments that are not simply a matter of technological decisions but also organizational issues. While digital libraries hold plenty of promise both now and for the future, they have been slow in taking off. Some digital libraries have either been completely abandoned or they have been put on hold indefinitely. One of the reasons for this predicament is that developers of digital libraries have approached their implementation the same traditional way of building applications, which is also akin to how structures of physical information organizations are built. Digital Libraries with their universal functionality may be even more flexible and reusable, if designed in a service-oriented manner. Such design should allow decreasing the effort of the creation of new digital libraries and the maintenance and scaling of currently existing large installations. Service-oriented architecture offers a better approach to building digital libraries, including streamlining business components, employing reusable services and connecting existing applications to communicate efficiently. The SOA is still a fairly new concept in DL systems. This chapter investigates the applicability of SOA as a fundamental architecture within the system. Its objective is to design a Service-Oriented Architecture for Digital Library System (DLS) using Web Service technology. SORADLS includes different layers which provide primitive services to the library applications built on top of the DLS. DLS techniques of personalization, alert, and caching build SORADLS as services. This architecture provides a fast, safe, convenient, and efficient service to users connected through the Internet.

As service-oriented architecture gains in popularity and grows in popularity, Web service recommendation and composition have become more important topics for research. Accurately predicting individualized QoS recommendations for recommending web services is a difficult task because of the inconsistency of the Internet and the scarcity of information regarding QoS history. Our team suggests a new framework for QoS values’ prediction and also presents two methods for clustering, User_BC and Service_BC, to support QoS prediction accuracy. Hierarchical clustering is used, based on the QoS dataset of PlanetLab1 (that) contains 200 service-user response time values, with 1,597 service values overall. In our research, we've found that our clustering-based methods beat other popular algorithms in detailed experimental comparisons and analyses.

Identification of web service candidates in legacy software is a crucial process in the reengineering of legacy systems to service oriented architecture. Researchers have proposed various automatic and semi-automatic methods for this purpose, some of which have proved to be quite efficient, but there are still certain gaps which need to be addressed. This article discovers the strengths and weaknesses of previous methods and develops a method with improved service candidate identification performance. In this article, service identification is considered as a search and optimization problem and a firefly algorithm is developed accordingly to give high-quality solutions in reasonably short times. A filtering method is also developed to remove excess modules (false positives) from the algorithm outputs. A case study on a legacy flight reservation system demonstrates the high reliability of the outputs given by the proposed method.

One of the key challenges of the Service Oriented Architecture is the discovery of relevant services for a given task. In Semantic Web Services, service discovery is generally achieved by using the service profile ontology of OWL-S. Profile of a service is a derived, concise description and not a functional part of the semantic web service. There is no schema present in the service profile to describe the input, output (IO), and the IOs in the service profile are not always annotated with ontology concepts, whereas the process model has such a schema to describe the IOs which are always annotated with ontology concepts. In this paper, we propose a complementary sophisticated matchmaking approach which uses the concrete process model ontology of OWL-S instead of the concise service profile ontology. Empirical analysis shows that high precision and recall can be achieved by using the process model-based service discovery.

In the paper the advantages of the service-oriented architecture of e-government and its prospects for Ukraine are revealed. Service-oriented e-government is governed by a service-oriented architecture. Service-oriented architecture is the functionality of software as services aiming to establish compatibility in their provision. The model of service-oriented e-government architecture is divided into five layers (levels), arranged from bottom to top: operational level, semantic level, service level, process level, presentation level. The practice of service-oriented e-government in foreign countries is studies: USA, Canada, and Great Britain. These countries implement the so-called Anglo-American model of informatization of the state, which is based on: removal of redundant functions of government, delivery of public services to citizens, meeting the needs of citizens through information technology. This model promotes the development of transactions, payment for services via the Internet. Foreign experience shows that a key feature of government activities is to ensure the success of the implemented actions, as well as to control the quality and scope of services. Therefore, when developing e-government projects, the governments take their efforts to get the corresponding positive consequences in the availability of services: providing quality services to citizens and businesses; increasing revenues; easing the financial burden on federal and local governments, primarily by reducing documents and electronic services on the Internet. The trends of the model implementation in Ukraine are studies. The evolution of the issue included the Program «Electronic Ukraine», the realization of the E-Government Information System. The further steps are analyzed based on the information from the official website of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine which provides the cases of service-oriented state (Popular services). The projects of the Ministry on Digital State digitize many services, update their legal framework, streamline the activity of state registers, and provide technical capabilities and data protection. It is concluded that service-oriented architecture of e-government is characterized by the features of its implementation based on such principles as: information-centric approach; the principle of a common platform, which focuses on creating an open information environment and common technological infrastructure for more effective collaboration of all participants and users of e-government; the principle of user orientation (all e-government activities are aimed at meeting the needs of service consumers); the principle of security and confidentiality.
