Mobile Web Services for Mobile Commerce

In recent years, Web services have gained popularity in terms of applications and usage. A copious volume of literature has been published that describes the potential benefits of this technology (Chu, You, & Teng, 2004; Gehlen & Pham 2005; Pasthan, 2005; Yoshikawa, Ohta, Nakagawa, & Kurakake, 2003). The business community has slowly started to realize how this technology can be used to solve various business problems (Tilley, Gerdes, Hamilton, Huang, Muller, Smith, & Wong, 2004). The idea of a Web service stems from the fact that different applications developed in heterogeneous technology platforms can be seamlessly integrated together via some common standard protocols over World Wide Web (Chu, et al., 2004; Pasthan, 2005). This will facilitate reusable software component development, enterprise application integration (EAI), and distributed application development. A new emerging area that is currently under development is mobile Web services, which will be quite useful in terms of capability and applications. There are numerous business benefits in using these mobile services, but these new technological developments pose various challenges. In this article, we discuss emerging mobile commerce applications and then present an open mobile Web services framework that will support various mobile commerce applications.

Web services as a new distributed system technology have been widely adopted by industries in the areas, such as enterprise application integration (EAI), business process management (BPM), and virtual organization (VO). However, lack of semantics in the current Web service standards has become a major barrier in service discovery and composition. To tackle the semantic issues of Web services, this paper proposes a comprehensive semantic service description framework – CbSSDF and a two-step service discovery mechanism based on CbSSDF—to help service users to easily locate their required services. The authors give a detailed explanation of CbSSDF, and then evaluate the framework by comparing it with OWL-S to examine how the proposed framework can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service discovery and composition. The evaluation is carried out by analysing the different proposed solutions based on these two frameworks for achieving a series of tasks in a scenario.

The Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunication (TelCo) sectors face enormous integration challenges, due to the prominent heterogeneity in existing systems. Service-oriented computing tackles such challenges by providing a fundamental platform that facilitates the convergence of distinct domains based on Web Services (WSs). With the mobility and technological advancements, service-oriented computing has been pushed towards the mobile sector enabling P2P Mobile Web Services (MobWSs) provisioning. In this work, we investigate the interaction, architecture and design characteristics of MobWSs for P2P computing. Here, the two MobWS interaction strategies are presented followed by the architectural discussion, enfolding server and client side components, of a resource-oriented MobWS framework. We follow REST design principles to propose an efficient way of architecting P2P MobWS systems, as an alternative to SOAP, enabling significant payload reduction and performance optimization in mobile servers. The detailed performance evaluation is also presented and compared to SOAP based on real-time measurements. By analyzing performance characteristics, we show that REST is a promising technique to architect P2P MobWS systems for resource-constraint mobile nodes.

The research project FUSION aims at supporting collaboration and interconnection between enterprises with technologies that allow for the semantic fusion of heterogeneous service-oriented business applications. The resulting FUSION approach is an enterprise application integration (EAI) conceptual framework proposing a system architecture that supports the composition of business processes using semantically annotated Web services as building blocks. The approach has been validated in the frame of three collaborative commercial proof-of-concept pilots. The chapter provides an overview on the FUSION approach and summarises our integration experiences with the application of the FUSION approach and tools during the implementation of transnational career and human resource management services.
