Web services as a new distributed system technology have been widely adopted by industries in the areas, such as enterprise application integration (EAI), business process management (BPM), and virtual organization (VO). However, lack of semantics in the current Web service standards has become a major barrier in service discovery and composition. To tackle the semantic issues of Web services, this paper proposes a comprehensive semantic service description framework – CbSSDF and a two-step service discovery mechanism based on CbSSDF—to help service users to easily locate their required services. The authors give a detailed explanation of CbSSDF, and then evaluate the framework by comparing it with OWL-S to examine how the proposed framework can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service discovery and composition. The evaluation is carried out by analysing the different proposed solutions based on these two frameworks for achieving a series of tasks in a scenario.

Most enterprises contain several heterogeneous systems, creating a fuzzy network of interconnected applications, services, and data sources. In this emerging business context, a clear need appears to link these former incompatible systems by using enterprise application integration (EAI) solutions. We propose a semantically enriched service-oriented business applications (SE-SOBA) framework that will provide a dynamically reconfigurable architecture enabling enterprises to respond quickly and flexibly to market changes. We also propose the development of a pure semantic-based implementation of the universal description, discovery, and integration (UDDI) specification, called pure semantic registry (PSR), which provides a flexible, extendable core architectural component allowing the deployment and business exploitation of Semantic Web services. The implementation of PSR involves the development of a semantic-based repository and an embedded resource definition framework (RDF)-based reasoning engine, providing strong query and inference capabilities to support effective service discovery and composition. We claim that when SE-SOBAs are combined with PSR and rule-based formalizations of business scenarios and processes, they constitute a holistic business-driven semantic integration framework, called FUSION, applied to intra- and inter- organizational EAI scenarios.

An emerging technology like business process execution language (BPEL) and its implementation in BPEL for Web services (BPEL4WS) gives extra possibilities in describing business processes. It further adheres, as a technology, in a consistent way to the underlying Web service-based implementation technology and is a perfect fit for service-oriented architectures (SOA) as they are currently implemented throughout organizations as a successor to enterprise application integration (EAI). However, BPEL4WS, in its current implementation, will only serve in a static way for production workflows. In this chapter we discuss how Semantic Web services through a semantic service-oriented architecture (SSOA) can be used to extend BPEL4WS to create ad hoc and collaborative workflows.

The research project FUSION aims at supporting collaboration and interconnection between enterprises with technologies that allow for the semantic fusion of heterogeneous service-oriented business applications. The resulting FUSION approach is an enterprise application integration (EAI) conceptual framework proposing a system architecture that supports the composition of business processes using semantically annotated Web services as building blocks. The approach has been validated in the frame of three collaborative commercial proof-of-concept pilots. The chapter provides an overview on the FUSION approach and summarises our integration experiences with the application of the FUSION approach and tools during the implementation of transnational career and human resource management services.

The established global business environment is under intense pressure from Asian countries such as Korea, China, and India. This forces businesses to concentrate on their core competencies and adopt leaner management structures. The coordination of activities both within companies and with suppliers and customers has become a crucial competitive advantage. At the same time, the Internet has transformed the way in which businesses run. As the Internet becomes a cheap and effective communication channel, businesses are quick to adopt the Web for integrating their systems together and linking them with their suppliers and customers. Current enterprise computing using J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) has yielded systems in which the coupling between various components in them are too tight to be effective for ubiquitous B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) e-business over the Internet. This approach requires too much agreement and shared context between business systems from different organizations. There is a need to move away from tightly coupled, monolithic systems and toward systems of loosely coupled, dynamically bound components. The emerging technology, Web services, provides the tools to accomplish this integration, but this approach presents many new challenges and problems that must be overcome. In this article, we will discuss the current approaches in enterprise application integration (EAI) and the limitations. There is also a need for service-oriented applications, that is, Web services. Finally, the challenges in implementing Web services are outlined.

Organizations in all sectors of business and government are pursuing service-oriented architecture (SOA) initiatives in response to their need for increased business agility. This is particularly true for mobile telecommunications companies. That is why mobile telecom operators need to research new and innovative sources of revenue. Innovation is not an easy task. It requires embracing a new way of doing business, where new technologies are fundamental. SOA architecture and Web services technology are proposed by IT industry as the best solution to create a network of partnership and new services, but despite software producer claims, interoperability issues arise with service composition. Such a problem can be significantly reduced by adopting a semantic approach in service description and service discovery. Our research is focused on new methods and tools for building high personalized, virtual e-business services. A new service provisioning architecture based on Web services has been conceived, taking into account issues related to end-user mobility. The following pages deal with a proposal for creating real localized, personalized virtual environments using Web services and domain ontologies. In particular, to overcome interoperability issues that could arise from a lack of uniformity in service descriptions, we propose a way for controlling and enforcing annotation policies based on a Service Registration Authority. It allows services to be advertised according to guidelines and domain rules. Furthermore, this solution enables enhanced service/component discovery and validation, helping software engineers to build services by composing building blocks and provision/deliver a set of personalized services.

Communication between heterogeneous systems is difficult to be achieved without affecting the existing systems in Enterprise Application Integration. A kind of dynamic web services publishing software based on CXF is proposed in this paper. The purpose of this software are twofold. Firstly, it encapsulates specified data called by other systems into web service published dynamically which unifies customization among heterogeneous systems. Secondly, the function of service monitoring provided allows users to get the real-time information of published web services. The proposal software has been deployed in a Chinese large-scale military enterprise. Practice in the enterprise shows that the software can simplify web service development, quickly build a web service which encapsulates large amounts of data, and achieve information sharing within the enterprise environment.
