The phenomenon of Coronavirus Disease 2019 forced the education system in Indonesia to be run online. The descriptive qualitative method was usedin this research to investigate some cases faced by the Fourth Semester Students of the English Department, Nusa Cendana University toward online learning in Cross-Cultural Communication Lecture. It was conducted to answer students’ perceptions, solutions, and expectations in joining online lectures for the last three months in the Even Semester of Academic Year 2019-2020. To collect the data, and a non-facial interview technique was applied through some online Learning Management System; e-learning by Nusa Cendana University and Google Classroom. The data were analyzed by categorizing the students’ answers. It can be concluded that there were some changes in learning culture that forced students to deal with online teaching-learning activities. Undeniable, it was not easy to organize except well prepared from the very first beginning of class by having Course Contract which only needed to be changed into an online form. Yet, their expectations for universities and government to increase Learning Management System and subsidies for the needs of mobile data bundle (for teachers, lecturers, and students).

The Covid-19 pandemic that has occurred in Indonesia since March 2020 indirectly forced educators to switch from face-to-face teaching activities to online activities. Seeing the unrest experienced by educators, especially teachers and lecturers, who are not familiar with online teaching activities, the Online Learning Communication Science study program from Universitas Pelita Harapan held community service activities with the theme of digital literacy that can be followed by educators throughout Indonesia. Google Classroom is a medium that is raised in this activity because of the ease provided through its features even though Google Classroom cannot yet be categorized as a Learning Management System. Moreover, Google Classroom can be obtained for free and can be used through smart devices or computers that have an internet connection. With large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), this activity was held online using the digital platform Zoom Meeting. The result of this activity is that educators experience improved ability and understanding to carry out online teaching activities using Google Classroom such as creating classes, assignments, and quizzes, sharing teaching materials to conduct evaluations in the hope that educators are ready to do #ngajardarirumah.

The Covid-19 pandemic forces learning activities to change from classroom learning to online-based learning. Based on the results of the interview, it was found that the teachers at Nurul Fadhilah school did not yet have the readiness to manage online teaching and learning activities, especially in science subjects. The influencing factors are (1) understanding of basic science concepts (physics, chemistry, biology), (2) understanding of systematic online learning management and (3) mastery of Learning Management System (LMS) technology. Therefore, the aim of this activity is to implement LMS technology in the management of online science learning using a basic conceptual approach to chemistry education. LMS is a technology application developed specifically for managing classrooms, distributing learning materials and enabling collaboration between students and teachers online. The LMS used in this activity is Google Classroom. Based on the data, it is known that 65% of the teachers at Nurul Fadhilah School have not managed online science teaching and learning activities using LMS technology. The results of the systematic online science learning management workshop using the basic concepts of chemistry education and the implementation of LMS technology, especially Google Classroom, showed an increase, as many as 80% of teachers have created, designed and managed classes interactively using Google Classroom LMS technology and have integrated the concept of basic chemistry education in science learning. So that students are more happy and comfortable in learning online and are more disciplined in collecting assignments and teachers are more comfortable in managing and evaluating student assignments. Learning management systems have become a key component of teaching and learning in higher education. However, the evidence on the importance of learning management systems to learning is still in its infancy. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role that the Canvas learning management system played in the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, Australia. To do this, we conducted interviews with lecturers ( n = 9) and postgraduate coursework students ( n = 7) from the School during Semester 2, 2018. We analysed the interviews thematically, identifying one overarching theme: that Canvas is predominantly used and perceived as an information repository by teaching academics and students. This means that lecturers place course materials on the learning management system for students to use and are making limited use of other, more interactive features of the learning management system, despite interaction being seen as essential to effective teaching and learning. This use of Canvas was explained by two factors: (1) face-to-face learning is perceived as superior to online learning and (2) the existence of skill and capacity barriers that hinder improved online teaching and learning practice, even where professional development opportunities exist for lecturers. We argue that this represents suboptimal use of a learning management system, especially when online learning is likely to become more significant in the coming years. To address this issue, we recommend employing and appropriately resourcing educational designers within higher education settings. These specialists can aid lecturers in the creation of genuinely interactive online environments so that the benefits of online teaching and learning can be fully realised.
