Traffic Signal Control for a Single Intersection-Based Intelligent Transportation System

Traffic optimization at an intersection, using real-time traffic information, presents an important focus of research into intelligent transportation systems. Several studies have proposed adaptive traffic lights control, which concentrates on determining green light length and sequence of the phases for each cycle in accordance with the real-time traffic detected. In order to minimize the waiting time at the intersection, the authors propose an intelligent traffic light using the information collected by a wireless sensors network installed in the road. The proposed algorithm is essentially based on two parameters: the waiting time in each lane and the length of its queue. The simulations show that the algorithm applied at a network of intersections improves significantly the average waiting time, queue length, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions.

Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructuredthat includes a business on a day-to-day basis including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The emerging connected technologies created around ubiquitous digital devices have opened unique opportunities to enhance the performance of the ITS. However, magnitude and heterogeneity of the Big Data are beyond the capabilities of the existing approaches in ITS. Therefore, there is a crucial need to develop new tools and systems to keep pace with the Big Data proliferation. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive and flexible architecture based on distributed computing platform for real-time traffic control. The architecture is based on systematic analysis of the requirements of the existing traffic control systems. In it, the Big Data analytics engine informs the control logic. We have partly realized the architecture in a prototype platform that employs Kafka, a state-of-the-art Big Data tool for building data pipelines and stream processing. We demonstrate our approach on a case study of controlling the opening and closing of a freeway hard shoulder lane in microscopic traffic simulation.

Using cellular floating vehicle data is a crucial technique for measuring and forecasting real-time traffic information based on anonymously sampling mobile phone positions for intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). However, a high sampling frequency generates a substantial load for ITS servers, and traffic information cannot be provided instantly when the sampling period is long. In this paper, two analytical models are proposed to analyze the optimal sampling period based on communication behaviors, traffic conditions, and two consecutive fingerprint positioning locations from the same call and estimate vehicle speed. The experimental results show that the optimal sampling period is 41.589 seconds when the average call holding time was 60 s, and the average speed error rate was only 2.87%. ITSs can provide accurate and real-time speed information under lighter loads and within the optimal sampling period. Therefore, the optimal sampling period of a fingerprint positioning algorithm is suitable for estimating speed information immediately for ITSs.

In order to improve the degree and real-time of the vehicle image detection, a background extraction method based on the probability mean value method and the background update based on the weighted coefficient method through divided area are proposed through the acquisition of real-time traffic information and processing of video images for intelligent transportation systems. Finally a prototype of background extraction and background update is got, and it achieves the detection of moving vehicles. The experimental results show that this method is simple, small amount of calculation and it has a good robustness; it can extract a good background image quickly and detect a complete shadow of vehicles. So this method can meet the requirements of real-time detection of multiple moving targets.

This paper presents fog-based intelligent transportation systems (ITS) architecture for traffic light optimization. Specifically, each intersection consists of traffic lights equipped with a fog node. The roadside unit (RSU) node is deployed to monitor the traffic condition and transmit it to the fog node. The traffic light center (TLC) is used to collect the traffic condition from the fog nodes of all intersections. In this work, two traffic light optimization problems are addressed where each problem will be processed either on fog node or TLC according to their requirements. First, the high latency for the vehicle to decide the dilemma zone is addressed. In the dilemma zone, the vehicle may hesitate whether to accelerate or decelerate that can lead to traffic accidents if the decision is not taken quickly. This first problem is processed on the fog node since it requires a real-time process to accomplish. Second, the proposed architecture aims each intersection aware of its adjacent traffic condition. Thus, the TLC is used to estimate the total incoming number of vehicles based on the gathered information from all fog nodes of each intersection. The results show that the proposed fog-based ITS architecture has better performance in terms of network latency compared to the existing solution in which relies only on TLC.

<p><strong>Vehicular traffic is continuously increasing around the world, especially in urban areas, and the resulting congestion ha</strong><strong>s</strong><strong> be</strong><strong>come</strong><strong> a major concern to automobile users. The popular static electric traffic light controlling system can no longer sufficiently manage the traffic volume in large cities where real time traffic control is paramount to deciding best route. The proposed mobile traffic management system provides users with traffic information on congested roads using weighted sensors. A prototype of the system was implemented using Java SE Development Kit 8 and Google map. The model </strong><strong>was</strong><strong> simulated and the performance was </strong><strong>assessed</strong><strong> using response time, delay and throughput. Results showed that</strong><strong>,</strong><strong> mobile devices are capable of assisting road users’ in faster decision making by providing real-time traffic information and recommending alternative routes.</strong></p>

Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) becomes one of the most popular modern technologies these days, due to its contribution to the development and modernization of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The primary goal of these networks is to provide safety and comfort for drivers and passengers in roads. There are many types of VANET that are used in ITS, in this paper, we particularly focus on the Vehicle to Vehicle communication (V2V), which each vehicle can exchange information to inform drivers of other vehicles about the current state of the road flow, in the event of any emergency to avoid accidents, and reduce congestion on roads. We proposed V2V using Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity); the reason of its unique characteristics that distinguish it from other types. There are many difficulties and the challenges in implementing most types of V2V, and the reason is due to the lack of devices and equipment needed for real implementation. To prove the possibility of applying this type in real life, we made a prototype contains a modified toy car, a 12-volt power supply, sensors, visual, audible alarm, a visual “LED” devices, and finally a 12-volt DC relay unit. As a conclusion, the proposed implementation in spite of minimal requirements and use simple equipment, we have achieved the most important main objectives of the paper: preventing vehicles from collision, early warning, and avoiding congestion on the roads.

A disruptive technology often used in finance, Internet of Things (IoT) and healthcare, blockchain can reach consensus within a decentralised network—potentially composed of large amounts of unreliable nodes—and to permanently and irreversibly store data in a tamper-proof manner. In this paper, we present a reputation system for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). It considers the users interested in traffic information as the main actors of the architecture. They securely share their data which are collectively validated by other users. Users can choose to employ either such crowd-sourced validated data or data generated by the system to travel between two locations. The data saved is reliable, based on the providers’ reputation and cannot be modified. We present results with a simulation for three cities: San Francisco, Rome and Beijing. We have demonstrated the impact of malicious attacks as the average speed decreased if erroneous information was stored in the blockchain as an implemented routing algorithm guides the honest cars on other free routes, and thus crowds other intersections.

Providing accurate real-time traffic information is an inherent problem for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In order to improve the knowledge base of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), ITS are strongly concerned with data fusion techniques of all kinds of sensors deployed over the traffic network. Driver assistance is devoid of a comprehensive evidential reasoning system on contextual information, more specifically when a combination involves inside and outside sensory information of the driving environment. In this paper, we propose a novel agent-based evidential reasoning system using contextual information. Based on a series of information handling techniques, specifically, the belief functions theory and heuristic inference operations to achieve a consensus about daily driving activity in automatically inferring. That is quite different from other existing proposals, as it deals jointly with the driving behavior and the driving environment conditions. A case study including various scenarios of experiments is introduced to estimate behavioral information based on synthetic data for prediction, prescription, and policy analysis. Our experiments show promising, thought-provoking results encouraging further research.
