A continuously growing population and their migration to urban centers consequently leads to waste expansion. The rapidly increasing quantities of waste generated in the cities affect way of human life, environment and planet. Hence, the necessity for smarter, safer, and greener places have never been more urgent. The novel technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) particularly, holds the potential to better manage waste and recycling. The IoT-driven waste management systems positively influence achieving the vision of smart green cities. This article analyzes the role of smart and safe IoT-powered waste management system, highlights its benefits, and possibilities of implementation and evaluation. It is expected that the IoT-based waste management system will deal successfully with an increasing amount of diverse types of waste and through the realization of a smart green city vision will resolve numerous problems related to human health and environmental contamination.

Waste Management is one of the hectic and troublesome tasks which require much man power. The traditional waste management system is time consuming and not cost effective. In this scenario, we are designing an intelligent system for solid waste management using Internet of Things. Our proposed system consists of an intelligent smart bin and a mobile application. The smart bin consists of a unique identifier (RFID tag) and an ultra-sonic sensor to determine the waste level of the bin. The mobile application is intended for two user categories: Normal user and Garbage collector. The normal user can locate the nearby dustbins whereas the garbage collector can remotely assess the bin level. When the bin is full, an alert message is sent to the garbage collector and also displays the shortest route to the bin location. It uses genetic algorithm for finding the optimized path from the user to smart bin. The entire connected components and communication is managed by a central coordinator. Our implementation and evaluation results claims that this model can be used as an alternative for the traditional waste management system. This system also ensures cost effectiveness and less time consumption.

The aim of the article is to present the issues of the waste management system supported by logistic activities. The main emphasis was laid on the role of the systemic approach in the waste flow management concept. The article presents theoretical foundations related to the concept of reverse logistics, defines the waste flow directions in the waste management system and discusses the waste disposal chain.

The article discusses the issue of an effective management system in the field of production and consumption waste in the Tyumen region. The priorities of the state policy in the field of waste management are reflected. The ways of optimization of logistics and development of infrastructure in this area are described. The options for achieving an integrated strategy are considered. Methods of preventing the harmful effects of production and consumption waste on human health and the environment, as well as options for minimizing the amount of generated waste and using waste as a source of raw materials are outlined. The implementation and effectiveness of the measures taken is under the control of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing for the Tyumen region. Events in the Tyumen region are implemented in close interdepartmental cooperation with executive authorities and local government bodies. The Tyumen model of the municipal waste management system is recognized as one of the most successful in the Russian Federation.

The problem of coverage of the population by services of waste removal in the cross section of regions and the connection of this indicator with economic and social aspects of human activity has been considered. The regions are compared, the dynamics of changes of the index by years is analyzed. The dependence of coverage of services on the number of employees in the field of waste management and on the level of financing of the sphere of waste management is analyzed. These figures are found to vary significantly and there is no correlation between the number of employees or the amount of waste management system financing and the increase in the level of service provision in the region. The reasons, of the imperfections of the household waste system collection and removal are identified. The importance of correctly determining the level of waste collection services coverage for the proper waste collection subsystem organization is characterized. The study of correlation between indices of human development in the countries of the world and the index of coverage of the population by services for removal of household waste is conducted. It is found that there is a direct correlation between the indicators for individual countries. Based on the obtained model, the validity of the indicator for the regions of Ukraine is analyzed. It is determined that the values of the population coverage of waste collection for the regions do not fit into the model obtained. Assumptions have been made about the inaccuracy of public data on waste collection services in the regions of Ukraine. Waste management system in the regions of Ukraine, in particular with regard to waste collection, is currently characterized by the imbalance of development and insufficient accuracy of the indicators, and needs concerted action and measures to optimize it to ensure proper collection of municipal waste at the regional level, as well as to create an effective information and analytical system to monitor the state of the household waste management system. It is concluded that the improvement of the waste collection system should be one of the highest priorities at the local level to reduce the risk of negative impact on human life and health, the environment, etc.
