Improving Effectiveness of Process Model Matchers Using Wordnet Glosses

Process model matching is a key activity in many business process management tasks. It is an activity that consists of detecting an alignment between process models by finding similar activities in two process models. This article proposes a method based on WordNet glosses to improve the effectiveness of process model matchers. The proposed method is composed of three steps. In the first step, all activities of the two BPs are extracted. Second, activity labels are expanded using word glosses and finally, similar activities are detected using the cosine similarity metric. Two experiments were conducted on well-known datasets to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the first one, an alignment is computed using the cosine similarity metric only and without a process of expansion. While, in the second experiment, the cosine similarity metric is applied to the expanded activities using glosses. The results of the experiments were promising and show that expanding activities using WordNet glosses improves the effectiveness of process model matchers.

The process model matching is a critical step in many business process management activities. Process model matching consists of finding correspondences between activities of process models. This article presents a method for matching process model. The proposed method matches (i.e., aligns) two process models in three sequential steps. First, activities in the two process models are extracted. Second, the extracted activities are expanded using synonyms, hypernyms, and hyponyms of its composing words. These synonyms, hypernyms, and hyponyms are extracted from the WordNet thesaurus. Third, the expanded activities are compared using the Monge-Elkan similarity metric to detect matches. An empirical study was conducted on three well known datasets to evaluate the proposed method. The results of the experiment showed that the proposed method has the potential to match business process models in an effective manner when step two of the method is based on synonyms and hypernyms.

Business Process Management (BPM) research resulted in a plethora of methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of operational business processes. This survey aims to structure these results and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in BPM. In BPM the concept of a process model is fundamental. Process models may be used to configure information systems, but may also be used to analyze, understand, and improve the processes they describe. Hence, the introduction of BPM technology has both managerial and technical ramifications and may enable significant productivity improvements, cost savings, and flow-time reductions. The practical relevance of BPM and rapid developments over the last decade justify a comprehensive survey.

Resumen Los Sistemas de Gestión de Procesos de Negocio (BPMS) tienen por objetivo facilitar la actividad empresarial, permitiendo el control automatizado de los procesos de las organizaciones. Sin embargo, no es deseable que los modelos de proceso de negocio, generados por estos BPMS, incluyan las reglas de negocio dentro de sí. Esto representa un serio problema para la modularidad y flexibilidad del modelo, pues cuando se requiere modificar una regla que se usa en distintos puntos del modelo, es necesario modificar el modelo en todos los puntos donde se utilice la regla. En este artículo se hace una propuesta para separar las reglas de negocio del modelo de proceso y manejarlas de forma independiente mediante un motor de reglas de negocio. Esto implica guardar las reglas de negocio en un repositorio que controla un motor de reglas de negocio y una técnica para invocar la regla desde el modelo. Con este trabajo se hace un aporte al mejoramiento del diseño de los actuales BPMS que se traduciría en modelos de negocios muy flexibles y modulares. However, it is not desirable that the business process models generated by these BPMS, business rules included within. This presents a serious problem for modularity and flexibility of the model, because when you want to change a rule that is used in different parts of the model, it would be necessary to change the model at all points where the rule is used. In this paper a proposal to separate business from process model and manage it independently using a business rules engine is done. This involves keeping the business rules in a repository that controls a business rules engine and a technique to invoke the rule from the model. This paper is a contribution to improving the design of existing BPMS that would result in highly flexible business models and modular. The paper outlines the concept for using the Business Process Management System (BPMS) to improve processes in a rental company. It also presents a case study of the implementation of the process approach in a medium-sized company dealing in the production, rental and service of work and protective clothing. The aim of the paper is to prepare reference business process models that allow you to measure and improve all the corporate activities. The process models were prepared in accordance with the BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The results of the conducted research prove that well designed business processes may not only be managed but also easily enhanced and automated in a way that allows organization to improve its performance in meaningful ways. The paper describes in detail - in subsequent chapters - sales, warehouse delivery, incoming correspondence handling, and cost accounting processes. In the last chapter the system architecture is presented. The proess models are prepared in an innovative way that allows easy process automation.

This article addresses the evolution of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) in the automotive industry, exploring its contribution to a shift in the maintenance paradigm. To this end, we firstly present the concepts of predictive maintenance (PdM), condition-based maintenance (CBM), and their applications to increase awareness of why and how these concepts are revolutionizing the automotive industry. Then, we introduce the business process management (BPM) and business process model and notation (BPMN) methodologies, as well as their relationship with maintenance. Finally, we present the case study of the Renault Cacia, which is developing and implementing the concepts mentioned above.

Esta investigación tiene la intención de evaluar el efecto de la automatización en el desempeño de los procesos de una empresa de servicios. Para tal efecto, se analiza los resultados de la automatización de un proceso clave de negocio en un proveedor de servicios de telecomunicaciones. La automatización implementada toma como referencia el ciclo de vida descrito por la metodología BPM (Business Process Management), el cual se compone de cuatro fases: Modelamiento, implementación, ejecución, y análisis. Para la modelación del proceso se utilizó la notación definida en el estándar Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). La automatización se implementó usando un paquete de herramientas informáticas comercial del tipo BPMS (Business Process Management System).

Integrating risks aspects during business process management starts with an accurate consideration of risk's characteristics in the modelling phase. Most research is needed on integrating risk and business process modelling. Actually, the literature suggests various approaches to represent risk-related information in business process models. The diversity of those methods and the fact that this domain is still emerging make it difficult to choose the most suitable language. This paper aims to represent a survey of the existing risk-annotated business process model's notations.

Companies need to adapt their processes quickly in order to react to changing customer demands or new regulations, for example. Process models are an appropriate means to support process setup but currently the (re)design of process models is a time-consuming manual task. Semantic Business Process Management, in combination with planning approaches, can alleviate this drawback. This means that the workload of (manual) process modeling could be reduced by constructing models in an automated way. Since existing, traditional planning algorithms show drawbacks for the application in Semantic Business Process Management, we introduce a novel approach that is suitable especially for the Semantic-based Planning of process models. In this chapter, we focus on the semantic reasoning, which is necessary in order to construct control structures, such as decision nodes, which are vital elements of process models. We illustrate our approach by a running example taken from the financial services domain. Moreover, we demonstrate its applicability by a prototype and provide some insights into the evaluation of our approach.

This paper formulates the process model matching problem as an optimization problem and presents a heuristic approach based on genetic algorithms for computing a good enough alignment. An alignment is a set of not overlapping correspondences (i.e., pairs) between two process models(i.e., BP) and each correspondence is a pair of two sets of activities that represent the same behavior. The first set belongs to a source BP and the second set to a target BP. The proposed approach computes the solution by searching, over all possible alignments, the one that maximizes the intra-pairs cohesion while minimizing inter-pairs coupling. Cohesion of pairs and coupling between them is assessed using a proposed heuristic that combines syntactic and semantic similarity metrics. The proposed approach was evaluated on three well-known datasets. The results of the experiment showed that the approach has the potential to match business process models effectively.
