Business Process Management (BPM) research resulted in a plethora of methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of operational business processes. This survey aims to structure these results and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in BPM. In BPM the concept of a process model is fundamental. Process models may be used to configure information systems, but may also be used to analyze, understand, and improve the processes they describe. Hence, the introduction of BPM technology has both managerial and technical ramifications and may enable significant productivity improvements, cost savings, and flow-time reductions. The practical relevance of BPM and rapid developments over the last decade justify a comprehensive survey.

The paper outlines the concept for using the Business Process Management System (BPMS) to improve processes in a rental company. It also presents a case study of the implementation of the process approach in a medium-sized company dealing in the production, rental and service of work and protective clothing. The aim of the paper is to prepare reference business process models that allow you to measure and improve all the corporate activities. The process models were prepared in accordance with the BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The results of the conducted research prove that well designed business processes may not only be managed but also easily enhanced and automated in a way that allows organization to improve its performance in meaningful ways. The paper describes in detail - in subsequent chapters - sales, warehouse delivery, incoming correspondence handling, and cost accounting processes. In the last chapter the system architecture is presented. The proess models are prepared in an innovative way that allows easy process automation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the state of the art of social business process management (Social BPM), explaining applied approaches, existing tools and challenges and to propose a research agenda for encouraging further development of the area. Design/methodology/approach The methodology comprises a qualitative analysis using secondary data. The approach relies on searches of scientific papers conducted in well-known databases, identifying research work related to Social BPM solutions and those contributing with social characteristics to BPM. Based on the identified papers, the authors selected the most relevant and the latest publications, and categorized their contributions and findings based on open and selective coding. In total, the analysis is based on 51 papers that were selected and analyzed in depth. Findings Main results show that there are several studies investigating modeling approaches for socializing process activities and for capturing implicit knowledge possessed and used by process actors, enabling to add some kind of flexibility to business processes. However, despite the proven interest in the area, there are not yet adequate tools providing effective solutions for Social BPM. Based on our findings, the authors propose a research agenda comprising three main lines: contributions of social software (SS) to Social BPM, Social BPM as a mechanism for adding flexibility to and for discovering new business processes and Social BPM for enhancing business processes with the use of new technologies. The authors also identify relevant problems for each line. Practical implications Some SS tools, like wikis, enable managing social aspects in executing business processes and can be used to coordinate simple business processes. Despite they are commonly used, they are not yet mature tools supporting Social BPM and more efficient tools are yet to appear. The lack of tools preclude organizations from benefitting from implicit knowledge owned by and shared among business process actors, which could contribute to better-informed decisions related to organizational processes. In addition, more research is needed for considering Social BPM as an approach for organizations to benefit from the adoption of new technologies in their business processes. Originality/value The paper assesses the state of the art in Social BPM, an incipient area in research and practice. The area can be defined as the intersection of two bigger areas highly relevant for organizations; on the one hand, the management and execution of business processes; and on the other hand, the use of social software, including social media tools, for leveraging on implicit knowledge shared by business process actors to improving efficiency of business processes.

Process model matching is a key activity in many business process management tasks. It is an activity that consists of detecting an alignment between process models by finding similar activities in two process models. This article proposes a method based on WordNet glosses to improve the effectiveness of process model matchers. The proposed method is composed of three steps. In the first step, all activities of the two BPs are extracted. Second, activity labels are expanded using word glosses and finally, similar activities are detected using the cosine similarity metric. Two experiments were conducted on well-known datasets to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the first one, an alignment is computed using the cosine similarity metric only and without a process of expansion. While, in the second experiment, the cosine similarity metric is applied to the expanded activities using glosses. The results of the experiments were promising and show that expanding activities using WordNet glosses improves the effectiveness of process model matchers.

Improvement of Business-Activities in Telecommunication Enterprises by the eTOM Business-Process Structural Model Implementation For now, in front of telecommunication branch enterprises of Ukraine, there is a problem of activity improvement with the purpose of granting high-quality services and maintenance of competitive position, both on internal, and on a foreign market. To solve this problem, telecommunication companies appropriate to use the mechanisms of business-oriented process management and improvement of end-to-end business-processes. The purpose of this article is a choice of effective business-process model that will allow telecommunications companies to provide modern, high quality and cost competitive services. During research, conditions of the telecommunication branch enterprises of Ukraine were investigated and key problems of their activity were revealed. Existing business-process models have been considered and analyzed and the optimal model was chosen, according to the put criteria. By results of the analysis a conclusion was drawn, that to the enterprises for business-process modeling is expedient for using eTOM - high-level system business-oriented model aimed for providing of any technological services, including IT. As advantages from introduction eTOM at the Ukrainian enterprises were analyzed.

Resumen El objetivo del artículo es caracterizar el estándar Business Process Model and Notation BPMN, como herramienta gráfica para el modelado de los procesos de negocio de una organización, y realizar un análisis crítico de las posibilidades que ofrece, identificando sus ventajas y desventajas para representar adecuadamente aspectos como actores, actividades, eventos, flujos de trabajo, controles y recursos entre otros. Para verificar la funcionalidad que ofrece BPMN, se usó como caso de estudio ‘Alquiler de Vehículos’, que incluye los procesos básicos de compra, gestión, alquiler y venta de vehículo. Se encontró que la versión BPMN 2.0, incluye un conjunto de prestaciones adicionales que permiten modelar en forma completa y precisa los procesos de negocio, condición necesaria para que a partir de estos modelos se pueda implementar correctamente el sistema de gestión de procesos de negocio, utilizando una herramienta válida para tal fin. Se concluye que BPMN es una herramienta sencilla, fácil de comprender, pero con una gran potencialidad para el modelado de procesos de cualquier tipo de organización. Palabras Clave: Business Process Management BPM, Business Process Model and Notation BPMN, Alquiler de Vehículos, Business Process Management Suite BPMS.   Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe the standard Business Process Model and Notation BPMN, graphic tool for modeling business processes of an organization, and critical analysis of the possibilities, identifying advantages and disadvantages to adequately represent aspects as actors, activities, events, workflows, controls and resources among others. To verify the functionality offered BPMN, is used as a case study ‘Rent a Car’, which includes the basic processes of acquisition, management, leasing and sale of vehicle. We found that this standard, particularly BPMN version 2.0, includes a set of additional features that allow you to model a complete and accurate business processes, necessary condition for that since these models are able to successfully implement the business process management system, using a valid tool for this purpose. We conclude that BPMN is a simple tool, easy to understand, but with a great potential for modeling processes of any type of organization. Organizations are increasingly adopting Business Process Management (BPM) approaches growing the need for BPM expertise in the industry (Bandara et al., 2010). This has resulted in growing demand for college graduates who have a thorough knowledge of business processes (Lee, 2008). Hadidi (2014) pointed out that development of courses and programs in BPM area has received huge consideration in academia during recent times. This paper presents a classroom activities for teaching Business Process Management using a paper-based simulation game conducted as part of an undergraduate IS course. The paper discusses various class activities involved such as execution of the simulation game, creation of graphical representations of processes followed in the game, and creation of Business Process models using Microsoft Visio software. A post-test survey was conducted to evaluate the understanding of BPM concepts learned and analyze the effectiveness of the simulation game. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research.

The constant change and rising complexity of organizations, mainly due to the transforming nature of their business processes, has driven the increase of interest in business process management by organizations. It is recognized that knowing business processes can help to ensure that the software under development will meet the business needs. Some of software development processes (like unified process) already refer to business process modeling as a first effort in the software development process. A business process model usually is created under the supervision, clarification, approval, and validation of the business stakeholders. Thus, a business process model is a proper representation of the reality (as is or to be), having lots of useful information that can be used in the development of the software system that will support the business. The chapter uses the information existing in business process models to derive software models specially focused in generating a data model.

PurposeThe objective of the work is to analyze the impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) concepts and associated technologies in the framework of organizations and the management of their processes and how event orientation, as well as the structure of said business processes, can play an important role in this new organizational model. The main contribution of this work is to present a conceptualization of the research, identify approaches and challenges that require further study, and as a result, a proposal for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology comprises a qualitative analysis using secondary data. The approach relies on searches of scientific papers conducted in well-known databases, identifying research work around the IoT and Industry 4.0 applied to business process management. Based on the identified papers, the authors selected the most relevant and the latest publications, and categorized their contributions and findings based on open and selective coding. In total, the analysis is based on 95 papers that were selected and analyzed in depth.FindingsThe results of this research allow analyzing and ordering the existing contributions around Industry 4.0 and its impact on current organizations. The proposed conceptualization was derived from the analysis of the state of the research and identifies four categories: (1) improvements caused by Industry 4.0 and its impact on inter-organizational relations, (2) new architectural models and infrastructure of remote resources, their movement from the cloud to the edge and its effect on business processes, (3) context-aware concepts brought to business process management (BPM) linked to unstructured business processes and (4) complex event processing as a possible means for business processes sensitive to IoT signals.Practical implicationsThe construction of current software ecosystems is strongly affected by the variety of information sources that feed them, as well as their volume. In addition, business processes represent organizations internally and are challenged to transcend the limits of companies due to the mentioned changes in software ecosystems. Industry 4.0 in conjunction with BPM re-defines the business process management paradigm and leads them to acquire the dynamism and sensitivity to the context that they usually did not have, as well as force them to move toward distributed platforms.Originality/valueThis paper assesses the state of the art in Industry 4.0 and business process management. The area can be defined as the intersection of two bigger areas highly relevant for organizations; on the one hand, the management and execution of business processes; and on the other hand, new conceptual, technological and methodological challenges to information systems that have to become more sensitive to event processing and also have to consume a large volume of data permanently and ubiquitously.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on how entrepreneurs anticipate and change their company’s business process management after developing a radical innovation. The paper is based on a critical approach to business process modelling (BPM) that posits that – in spite of all the claims, guides and tools that companies employ to help them modelise their processes – business processes are developed and improved (or at least changed) by individuals who negotiate, anticipate and compromise to make these changes occur. Thus, BPM is more a matter of “bricolage” (Levi-Strauss) than an established and defined plan. Based on this position, the paper analyses how a business process model emerges in the early phases of a high-tech new venture when the entrepreneur lacks a valid template to form a conceptual representation of the firm’s business processes. Design/methodology/approach – The authors adopt a perspective based on the concept of bricolage. By analysing and comparing the discourse of 40 entrepreneurs – involved in an activity based on a radical innovation and 20 involved in an activity based on a more incremental concept – the authors are able to answer the two research questions. Findings – Entrepreneurs who develop a new activity based on any radical or incremental innovation generally base the BPM of their company and the evolution of this process on existing models. However, BPM generally differs based on the nature of the innovation. Thus, entrepreneurs who develop a new activity based on a radical innovation do not design a single BPM for their company but a portfolio of BPMs. The process by which such entrepreneurs develop such a portfolio is mainly conducted in a step-by-step and iterative approach that utilises “whatever is at hand” (Levi-Strauss, 1966). Originality/value – First, this study extends existing methods for and approaches to considering BPM. Second, this research partly answers the call for integration among different theoretical backgrounds and approaches that consider BPM.

Resumen Los Sistemas de Gestión de Procesos de Negocio (BPMS) tienen por objetivo facilitar la actividad empresarial, permitiendo el control automatizado de los procesos de las organizaciones. Sin embargo, no es deseable que los modelos de proceso de negocio, generados por estos BPMS, incluyan las reglas de negocio dentro de sí. Esto representa un serio problema para la modularidad y flexibilidad del modelo, pues cuando se requiere modificar una regla que se usa en distintos puntos del modelo, es necesario modificar el modelo en todos los puntos donde se utilice la regla. En este artículo se hace una propuesta para separar las reglas de negocio del modelo de proceso y manejarlas de forma independiente mediante un motor de reglas de negocio. Esto implica guardar las reglas de negocio en un repositorio que controla un motor de reglas de negocio y una técnica para invocar la regla desde el modelo. Con este trabajo se hace un aporte al mejoramiento del diseño de los actuales BPMS que se traduciría en modelos de negocios muy flexibles y modulares. However, it is not desirable that the business process models generated by these BPMS, business rules included within. This presents a serious problem for modularity and flexibility of the model, because when you want to change a rule that is used in different parts of the model, it would be necessary to change the model at all points where the rule is used. In this paper a proposal to separate business from process model and manage it independently using a business rules engine is done. This involves keeping the business rules in a repository that controls a business rules engine and a technique to invoke the rule from the model. This paper is a contribution to improving the design of existing BPMS that would result in highly flexible business models and modular.
