This paper analyzes the formal syntax and semantics of the UML activity diagram, then extends traditional test coverage criteria, puts forward the cover standards of the UML activity diagram , finally implements the test scenes generation algorithm and test tools, and has more help to improve the software quality.

Software testing is regarded as a pivotal approach to realize a high reliable product. To check for the correctness of results, we require appropriate test cases. UML models are largely used to depict the specifications for software development. Test cases are created independently and based on the sequence of occurrence in the diagrams; they lead to corresponding test paths in the program. In this paper, we have analyzed an activity diagram, consisting of concurrent activities, for generating test paths. The obtained test paths are therefore required to be ranked. We have demonstrated that it is conceivable to apply Genetic Algorithm procedures alongside Ant Colony Optimization technique for not only finding the most critical path but also prioritizing the other paths too for enhancing the effectiveness of software testing.

With the exponential growth in size and complexity of softwares, the testing activity is no more limited to testing phase of SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle). Testing process has been made iterative and incremental in Object Oriented development scenario. This leads to increase in effort and time required for testing as well as explosion in test case. But when it comes to regression testing, it has the additional issue of test case retesting which further increasing the effort and time. So a suitable prioritization technique should be used to address these issues. In this paper we had given a proposal which is based on prioritization of test cases using GA (Genetic Algorithm). This process is found to be very effective during regression testing. In this paper we found an optimized independent path having maximum critical path value, which further leads to prioritization of test cases. The three component of regression testing i.e effort, time, cost will be gradually reduce by using this approach.

System design is recognized as one of the most critical components of a software system that bridges system requirements and coding. System design also has a significant impact on testing and maintenance activities, and on further improvements during the lifespan of the software system. Software design should reflect all necessary components of the requirements in a clear and understandable manner by all stakeholders of the software system. To distinguish system elements, separation of concerns in software design is suggested. In this respect, identification of the user tasks, i.e., the tasks that need to be performed by the user, is not currently reflected explicitly in system design documents. Our main assumption in this study is that software quality can be improved significantly by clearly identifying the user tasks from those that need to be performed by the computer system itself. Additionally, what we propose has the potential to better reflect the user requirements and main objectives of the system on the software design and thereby to improve software quality. The main aim of this study is to introduce a novel notation for software developers in the frame of UML Activity Diagram (UML-AD) that enables designers to identify the user tasks and define them separately from the system tasks. For this purpose, an extension of UML-AD, named UML-ADE (UML-Activity Diagram Extended) was proposed. Afterwards, it was implemented in a serious game case for which the specification of user tasks is extremely important. Finally, its effectiveness was analyzed and compared to UML-AD experimentally with 72 participants. The defect detection performance of the participants on both diagrams with two real-life serious game scenarios was evaluated. Results show a higher level of understandability for those using UML-ADE, which in turn may indicate a better design and higher software quality. The results encourage researchers to develop specific design representations dedicated to task design to improve system quality and to conduct further evaluations of the impact of these design on each of the above mentioned potential benefits for the software systems.

As Unified Modeling Language (UML) activity diagrams capture the key system behavior, the UML activity diagram is well suited for the system level testing of systems. In this paper, first an activity flow graph is derived from activity diagram. Then, all the required information is extracted from the activity flow graph (AFG). The activity flow graph (AFG) for the activity diagram is created by traversing the activity diagram from beginning to end, showing choices, conditions, concurrent executions, loop statements. From the graph different control flow sequence are identified by traversing the AFG by depth first traversal technique. Next, an algorithm is proposed to generate all activity paths. Finally, test cases are generated using activity path coverage criteria. Here, a case study on Soft drink Vending Machine (SVM) has been presented to illustrate our approach.
