A Novel Design of Car Wiper Using Compliant Mechanism Method

Compliant mechanism is a new design approach on industry, particularly on product development, which reducing cost, development time and introduction of new quality components. This paper is focusing on the application of compliant mechanism concept on car wiper by using shape optimization method to get optimum compliant design of wiper. Reverse engineering has been used to gather dimensional data in order to model the actual wiper as datum. Compliant wiper designs are developed by replacing the joints at datum wiper; hence the components of wiper were reduced to become single part only. The shape of compliant wiper then was optimized by using ASNYS to get the optimal compliant design. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was done on both datum and compliant wipers to examine the results. Simple physical and functional testing has been conducted to validate the functionality of compliant wiper. Based on the FEA results and simple testing, the compliant mechanism is able to be implemented at car wiper.

The interest in actuators based on dielectric elastomer films as a promising technology in robotic and mechatronic applications is increasing. The overall actuator performances are influenced by the design of both the active film and the film supporting frame. This paper presents a single-acting actuator which is capable of supplying a constant force over a given range of motion. The actuator is obtained by coupling a rectangular film of silicone dielectric elastomer with a monolithic frame designed to suitably modify the force generated by the dielectric elastomer film. The frame is a fully compliant mechanism whose main structural parameters are calculated using a pseudo-rigid-body model and then verified by finite element analysis. Simulations show promising performance of the proposed actuator.

Significant reduction in cost and time of bistable mechanism design can be achieved by understanding their bistable behavior. This paper presents bistable compliant mechanisms whose pseudo-rigid-body models (PRBM) are four-bar mechanisms with a torsional spring. Stable and unstable equilibrium positions are calculated for such four-bar mechanisms, defining their bistable behavior for all possible permutations of torsional spring locations. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and simulation is used to illustrate the bistable behavior of a compliant mechanism with a straight compliant member, using stored energy plots. These results, along with the four-bar and the compliant mechanism information, can then be used to design a bistable compliant mechanism to meet specified requirements.

Several studies have been conducted to prevent neck injury in rear-end collision. The headrest of the seat which suppresses the relative motion of the head and the torso can suppress the extension of the head, thereby alleviating the injury. The active headrest has a mechanism that supports the head by deploying the headrest at the rear-end collision. The spring remains compressed or twisted until a collision signal is generated and the headrest is deployed after the collision signal. Depending on the shape and deployment structure of the spring, a spring design with a high resilience that is acceptable to the headrest is required. In this paper, design parameter of spiral spring suitable for the structure of the developed headrest is selected, prototypes are fabricated, and development parameters such as development time and development distance are checked and optimal design parameters of the spiral spring are derived. The feasibility of the headrest with the designed spiral spring was verified by the finite element analysis.

This article presents a novel design of a flexure-based, piezoelectric actuated, completely decoupled, high-bandwidth, highresolution, and large stroke parallel XY micromanipulator with two amplification levers. The monolithic mechanism is featured with dual working modes, which meets different kinds of requirements in terms of high resolution and large workspace in micro/nano fields. In order to reduce the displacement loss, the modeling and analysis of bending motion of the levers are conducted; thereafter, compliance and stiffness modeling by employing the matrix method are established. Furthermore, the dynamics modeling and analysis via Lagrange equations are performed to improve the dynamic properties of the mechanism. The simulation results of finite element analysis indicate that the cross-coupling between the two axes is kept to 1.2%; meanwhile, the natural frequency of the mechanism is about 700 Hz, and the amplifier ratio is approximately 2.32. Both theoretical analysis and finite element analysis results well validate the performance of the proposed mechanism.

Topology optimization is a widely used lightweight design method for structural design of the collaborative robot. In this article, a topology optimization method for the robot lightweight design is proposed based on finite element analysis of the assembly so as to get the minimized weight and to avoid the stress analysis distortion phenomenon that compared the conventional topology optimization method by adding equivalent confining forces at the analyzed part’s boundary. For this method, the stress and deformation of the robot’s parts are calculated based on the finite element analysis of the assembly model. Then, the structure of the parts is redesigned with the goal of minimized mass and the constraint of maximum displacement of the robot’s end by topology optimization. The proposed method has the advantages of a better lightweight effect compared with the conventional one, which is demonstrated by a simple two-linkage robot lightweight design. Finally, the method is applied on a 5 degree of freedom upper-limb exoskeleton robot for lightweight design. Results show that there is a 10.4% reduction of the mass compared with the conventional method.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate a topology optimization method subject to displacement and stress constraints. The method does not rely on pseudo-densities; instead it exploits the concept of topological level-set where ‘partial’ elements are avoided. Consequently: (1) the stresses are well-defined at all points within the evolving topology, and (2) the finite-element analysis is robust and efficient. Further, in the proposed method, a series of topologies of decreasing volume fractions are generated in a single optimization run. The method is illustrated through numerical experiments in 2D.

A novel design using 3 bolts for a self-energized seal connector is proposed for quick assembly applications. Contact pressure distribution on the surface of the seal ring during initial bolt-up and subsequent operating pressure is analyzed for 3″ and 10″ connectors using Finite Element Analysis. FEA is performed on a 3″ and 10″ ANSI RF flange assembly and contact pressure distribution on the RF gasket is compared with the tapered seal ring assemblies. Hydrostatic tests are carried out for the tapered seal and ANSI bolted connectors to evaluate maximum pressure at which leak occurs for both size assemblies.
